Personality
Daemon is proud, combative, and openly contemptuous of restraint. He delights in swordplay and bloodshed, treating the clash of weapons as a pleasure rather than merely a duty. His confidence extends to dragon warfare: he believes dragonriders should exercise their overwhelming strength instead of submitting to the fears of ordinary lords 26 46 67.
His attachment to his family coexists with a persistent need to provoke them. He repeatedly insults Viserys, resents being overlooked for office, and reacts bitterly when Otto receives rewards or consideration. Yet seeing the wounds the Iron Throne leaves on Viserys can render him quiet and helpless, sharply contrasting with his usual aggression 6 58 69.
Daemon wants recognition as much as material power. During the dispute over the Stepstones command, he demands authority and protests that glory rightfully belongs to him. Once Baelon admits that he has always trusted Daemon’s loyalty, however, Daemon readily abandons the command dispute. He himself struggles to explain why he desires lands and power while repeatedly rejecting opportunities to receive them 69 70.
He has little patience for deference motivated by fear. His hostility toward Laenor stems from contempt for a dragonrider who tolerates humiliation, not, by his own account, from rumors about Laenor’s lovers. Rhaenyra observes that his abusive language is habitual even before the king 74.

History
City Watch and the Loss of the Succession
Daemon returns to King’s Landing and takes command of its poorly equipped City Watch. After rearming the men and winning their loyalty, he launches a brutal crackdown: thieves lose hands, rapists are castrated, and armed criminals face Daemon himself. The campaign substantially improves order in the city 1.
Baelon’s birth displaces him as first heir to the Iron Throne. At the ceremony naming Baelon Prince of Dragonstone, Daemon pauses before stepping forward to kneel and swear loyalty. Afterward, he spends much of his time on the Street of Silk, absent from the grieving royal household 4.
The “Kinslayer” Rumor
Otto identifies Daemon as the source of the epithet branding the infant Baelon a kinslayer over Aemma’s death, citing seven brothel witnesses. Confronted by Viserys, Daemon admits that using the term was an accident, then turns the argument toward his own exclusion from power and Viserys’s reliance on Otto 5 6.
Daemon demands to know why he has never been made Hand. Viserys refuses him permanently and threatens to cut out his tongue if he repeats the slur, but allows him to remain City Watch commander. Daemon subsequently intensifies his executions of criminals, earning the nickname “Maegor with No Crown.” Three months later, the brothers visit Baelon together, apparently reconciled 6.
Mysaria’s Pregnancy and the Stolen Egg
When Mysaria tells Daemon she is carrying his child, he promises to provide a cradle egg according to Targaryen tradition. He also anticipates enjoying Viserys’s reaction to the gesture 19.
Daemon steals a dragon egg and leaves with his lover for the Free Cities. Rhaenyra pursues him, encouraged by Baelon to challenge him to return as Viserys’s champion against Criston Cole. Daemon comes back with Rhaenyra, who carries the recovered egg 23 24 26.
Criston Cole’s Final Fight
Daemon takes Ser Harrold’s place against Cole, eager to overturn his earlier tournament defeat. The confrontation becomes a crisis when Cole seizes Rhaenyra and holds a sword to her throat 26.
After Rhaenyra wounds Cole and the Kingsguard restrain him, she prevents Daemon from delivering the killing blow and kills Cole herself. Daemon then joins Viserys, Rhaenyra, and Baelon in a family embrace following the violence 27.
Rivalry with Baelon
Daemon’s rivalry with his nephew includes personal provocations as well as arguments over succession. He steals Baelon’s expensive Dornish horse and “accidentally” melts his commemorative Vale gold coins. Baelon retaliates by taunting him about losing his place as heir, relying on Viserys and their blood ties to shield him from retaliation 38.
After Vermithor’s extraordinary growth, Daemon demands the same opportunity for Caraxes. Baelon refuses, and the dragons briefly challenge each other before their riders calm them. Their subsequent exchange of threats and mockery ends only when Rhaenyra threatens to tell Viserys 37 38.
Preparations for the Stepstones War
Daemon urges an aggressive response to the Triarchy and Dorne, arguing that the crown’s dragons should make victory possible. He scorns Viserys’s hesitation and repeatedly seeks command of the fleet 46 47 66.
The dispute peaks when Viserys promises Otto wealth and a Dornish castle for securing foreign allies. Daemon feels that his family is granting an outsider the glory he deserves. Viserys attempts to appease him by dividing naval command, but Baelon rejects the arrangement and insists that Corlys direct the main fleet 68 69.
Daemon then accuses Baelon of courting Otto while taking his own loyalty for granted. Baelon admits that fear of betrayal has shaped his treatment of the council, but that he has never feared Daemon would betray them. Their reconciliation leads Daemon to accept Corlys’s command and commit himself to fighting from Caraxes 70.
Conflict with Laenor
Laenor initially approaches Daemon as an admirer and asks to be knighted after the tournament. Daemon bluntly refuses. When Laenor later accepts the rebuke and offers to prove himself through tournament competition and service in the Stepstones, Daemon is baffled by his lack of resentment 72.
Their next encounter becomes openly hostile. Laenor challenges Daemon’s insults and accuses him of attacking his love life; Daemon instead condemns his unwillingness to resist humiliation. Rhaenyra persuades Daemon to stop, but he leaves with a challenge to strike his shield at the coming tourney. Laenor resolves to do exactly that 74.

- Baelon Targaryen — Nephew and successor to his former place as heir. Their antagonistic familiarity conceals Baelon’s deep confidence in Daemon’s loyalty 4 38 70.
