Background / History
Transmigration and succession
In his previous life, Baelon was an orphan raised at the Qidian orphanage, with more than twenty years of education and extensive familiarity with books and videos. After being struck by a truck, he awakens as Viserys’s newborn son and recognizes the setting as House of the Dragon 1 7.
His survival changes the fate of the prince who died after a single day in the original story. Aemma nevertheless dies during his delivery, and his first sight of his mother is her body on the blood-covered birthing bed. The experience prompts him to consider obstetric tools, disinfection, and ways to reduce deaths in childbirth 2.
After Aemma’s funeral, Viserys places Baelon on the Iron Throne, formally invests him as Prince of Dragonstone, and requires the assembled lords to swear allegiance. His birth displaces Daemon as the king’s immediate heir. Viserys also arranges his betrothal to Laena Velaryon to strengthen relations with her house 4 5.
Rumors subsequently spread through King’s Landing calling Baelon a matricide. Otto Hightower identifies Daemon as their source, citing witnesses who heard the slur in a brothel 5.
Childhood at court
Baelon grows up surrounded by wealth, public praise, and an intensely protective family. His secure position as Viserys’s legitimate eldest son makes him welcome the possibility of younger siblings rather than regard them as succession threats 8 10.
He studies history, noble genealogies, literacy, and High Valyrian while practicing archery under Ser Samwell Swann. He also develops businesses outside King’s Landing and builds a retinue of sixty-two knights, providing full armor and three horses for each man 7 9 13.
When Rhaenyra’s affair with Criston Cole provokes a family crisis, Baelon returns intending to mediate. He recommends stripping Cole’s honors and sending him to the Wall, then helps bring the captured knight before Viserys. During the same period, Viserys appoints Baelon cupbearer to the Small Council 22 23 25.
Claiming Vermithor
Baelon refuses to bind the golden dragon offered in infancy because the system has only one pet slot. He wants an adult dragon whose existing strength will benefit immediately from percentage-based buffs. Once able to speak, he has the egg returned to the Dragonpit and later refuses to visit the dragon that hatches from it 3 10.
Viserys and Rhaenyra oppose his plan to claim Vermithor out of fear for his life. Baelon finally obtains permission by mixing accounts of real trial deaths with invented claims that his dangerous dreams may eventually kill him permanently. Viserys agrees on the condition that he accompany his son to Dragonstone 28.
Carrying Jaehaerys’s unwashed nightclothes as a taming aid, Baelon enters Dragonmont and approaches Vermithor. Fear gives way to overwhelming fascination; he embraces the dragon’s snout and forms a connection with him. Their subsequent Trial Space battles rapidly strengthen both Vermithor and their bond 29 32 34 35.
Council politics and the Stepstones
Baelon secures Larys Strong’s service as Master of Whisperers and offers resources for spreading suspicion among the Three Daughters. Although uncertain of Larys’s loyalty, he considers the man’s usefulness sufficient reason to employ him 44 45.
At the Small Council, Baelon proposes brick construction and angular, star-shaped fortifications for defending conquered islands. When Viserys hesitates over war, Baelon claims to have foreseen Sunspear burning beneath circling dragons. The argument helps secure the king’s order to seize the Stepstones 47 48.
As preparations accelerate, Baelon becomes uneasy with the capital’s confidence in victory. He turns his attention to protective equipment for Vermithor, especially shielding the dragon’s vulnerable eyes 49.
Appearance
- Hair: Silver to silver-gold, worn in shoulder-length curls during childhood 23 41.
- Eyes: Purple or violet; the system labels his appearance the rare “Show-quality Targaryen” skin 2 23.
- Build: Still small enough to stand only waist-high to Viserys when requesting permission to claim a dragon 28.
- Clothing: Seen in a plain black velvet robe without dragon insignia; on Dragonstone, he wears a linen undershirt, wool sweater, cowhide boots, ruby ring, and golden hairpin 23 41.
- Hands: His palm is described as calloused when he tests his acquired resistance to dragonfire 35.
Personality
Baelon’s courteous public manner and concern for the vulnerable earn him a reputation for mercy. He pays for an elderly laborer to take time off to grieve, checks whether a new mother received her allotted supplies, and compensates shepherds whose sheep dragons have stolen. These actions combine genuine sympathy with an awareness that neglected commoners offer an opportunity to build royal support 13 41.
He is also ambitious, proud, and increasingly conscious of the power attached to his name and dragons. He wants to reshape Westeros and Essos, dislikes the independence of hereditary nobles, and considers reclaiming judicial authority through royal circuit courts. His gentle manner does not prevent him from contemplating the extermination of hostile Dornish nobles as a condition of lasting conquest 14 21 22 46.
Baelon values his survival and is alert to assassination, insecure passages, and battlefield accidents. Nevertheless, fascination with dragons and confidence in his system can overwhelm that caution. A near-fatal python attack forces him to acknowledge that Vermithor’s strength does not make his own body invulnerable 7 10 29 34 49.
His previous-life assumptions sometimes mislead him about Westerosi family ties and political behavior. He gradually recognizes that he cannot simply transplant familiar historical models, and he explicitly asks experienced councilors to identify flaws in his fortification designs 6 7 48.
Abilities & Skills
Pet Battle Training System
Baelon’s system provides a monster-filled Trial Space in which he and his selected dragon can earn loot and improvements 2.
- Structure: One hundred floors, with three challenge attempts available each day 2.
- Rewards: Cleared floors offer loot and a choice of one among three buffs 2 32.
- Dragon restriction: His bloodline fixes the available pet type as dragon; he has only one pet slot 2 3.
- Risk: Entering removes his awareness of the outside world. Trial death consumes an attempt and drains mental and physical energy, causing severe headaches 3.
- Recovery: Injuries sustained during the fight against the Balrog and Rodan do not remain when he and Vermithor return to the real world 35.
- Equipment limit: He enters as a soul and cannot bring ordinary outside weapons into the trial 32.
Inventory and Material Deployment
The inventory has ten slots, each stacking up to 999, and accepts only material originating in the Trial Space 33.
- Stores monster drops as well as collected earth, timber, and seawater 33 34.
- Releases earth to bury an attacking python and drops earth and logs onto enemies from above 34.
- Uses large stored pieces of meat as improvised weapons against pterosaurs 35.
- Calls these tactics “Earth Release,” “Wood Release,” and “Water Release”; they rely on stored materials, which can be exhausted or lost 34 35.
Dragon Bond and Fire Resistance
Baelon and Vermithor exchange emotions through their connection, allowing Baelon to soothe the dragon and coordinate increasingly complex attacks 32 34 35.
- Blood and Fire as One: Unlocked at bond Level 4; shares Vermithor’s resistance to the heat of flames 35.
- Demonstrated protection: Baelon handles lingering dragonfire without burning his hand 35.
- Limit: He initially distinguishes the prospective talent from being truly “The Unburnt.” It does not protect him from crushing force, broken bones, or other physical injuries 32 35.
- Battlefield contribution: Acts as an additional observer and decision-maker for Vermithor rather than merely a passenger 34.
Disease Immunity
The system states that Baelon will not contract any of the 241 diseases “the gods have scattered among mortals,” including pox, blood plague, erythema, and epilepsy 2.
Learning and Practical Knowledge
Baelon applies remembered concepts from his previous life rather than possessing comprehensive technical or military expertise 2 47 48.
- Medical knowledge: Recognizes disinfection as a means of reducing childbed fever 2 13.
- Military design: Introduces projecting bastions and crossfire to reduce defensive blind spots 48.
- Strategic reasoning: Treats control of the Stepstones and nearby seas as a prerequisite for a later mainland campaign against Dorne 47.
- Martial training: Practices archery under Samwell Swann, but his childhood bow is weak and his accuracy remains inconsistent 7 10.
- Knowledge limits: Consults experienced councilors about whether his imported designs suit Westerosi warfare 48.
Dreamwalker Persona
Baelon presents knowledge from his previous life and experiences in the Trial Space as prophetic dreaming 2 28.
- Uses the explanation to account for knowledge a child should not possess 2.
- Exploits Viserys’s concern over dangerous dreams to obtain permission to claim Vermithor 28.
- Claims a vision of Sunspear burning to overcome hesitation about the Stepstones war 48.
- The cited visions are deliberate presentations or fabrications; they do not establish that Baelon genuinely possesses prophetic sight 28 48.
Enterprises and Public Works
| Project | Actions and priorities |
|---|---|
| Public Birthing House | Checks that a family received its towel and egg allocation. Explains that high-proof alcohol and continued disinfection can prevent many cases of childbed fever, while recognizing that alcohol supplies are limited 13. |
| Toilet paper factory | Sells to ninety-six houses across the Seven Kingdoms. Offers three gold dragons for a successful material-saving improvement and orders tests of embossed sigils and colored designs 15. |
| Reed purchasing | Refuses to limit purchases despite accumulating supplies because cutting reeds gives unemployed people a source of income 15. |
| Perfume business | Supplies major houses and sends five perfumers to Storm’s End. Limits expansion for a huge Lysene order to fifteen percent because producing grain alcohol could raise food prices 20. |
| Grain reserves | Orders continued purchases across the Narrow Sea and modest purchases in the Riverlands without inflating prices 22. |
| Brickworks | Holds more than one hundred thousand red bricks along the Blackwater Rush and offers free bricks for the realm’s defenses 48. |
| Winter relief | Pays for free ginger-and-herb soup in King’s Landing, distributed through Ser Uther’s knights and squires 38. |
| Dragon-loss compensation | Gives shepherds his golden hairpin as immediate compensation and promises repayment for future sheep taken by dragons 41. |
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Golden dragon egg — Rhaenyra’s gift, identified by the system as an epic-tier dragon with A+ growth potential and a “loyal protector” trait. Baelon declines to bind it and later sends it to the Dragonpit 2 3 10.
- Jaehaerys’s unwashed nightclothes — Brought into Dragonmont as a dragon-taming aid 29.
- Python fang — Improvised trial weapon used after the Stage 11 encounter 34.
- Saddle ropes — Used to secure himself to Vermithor during combat; the dragon’s rapid growth later snaps the saddle’s ropes 34 36.
- Blue steel dagger — Forged by a leading King’s Landing smith; its edge rolls and chips when Baelon strikes Vermithor’s scales 36.
- Pre-Conquest coins — Collects coins dated to the year before Aegon’s Conquest; House Tyrell’s Name Day gift includes Green Hand coins he had sought for years 8 28.
Relationships
- Viserys I Targaryen — Father and king. His love and fear for Baelon’s safety repeatedly obstruct the prince’s dragon plans. Baelon both manipulates his belief in dreams and reassures him of his unconditional support 10 28 40.
- Aemma Arryn — Mother, who dies during his birth. Seeing her body influences his interest in safer childbirth practices 2.
- Rhaenyra Targaryen — Elder sister and protector. Gives him his golden egg, swears to protect him, and argues fiercely against his pursuit of an adult dragon 2 10.
- Daemon Targaryen — Uncle and displaced heir. Their relationship features succession rivalry, insults, and mutual provocation. Baelon refuses his request to let Caraxes use the Trial Space 4 5 28 38.
- Vermithor — Dragon and comrade-in-arms. Their shared battles deepen their emotional bond; Baelon risks himself directly to help kill the Balrog that wounds him 34 35.
- Laena Velaryon — Betrothed. Baelon later tells Corlys that he is too young for marriage and does not want the arrangement to restrict her 5 38.
- Ser Samwell Swann — Archery instructor and devoted knight. Baelon’s praise wins his loyalty, while the bodybuilding poses Baelon teaches him become a recurring embarrassment 7 9 10.
- Ser Uther — Trusted escort and agent. Protects Baelon in crowds, carries out his instructions, and organizes the soup distribution 11 12 22 38.
- Lyonel Strong — Councilor who seeks Baelon’s help restraining Viserys’s ambitions. Respects his ability but is disturbed by the ruthlessness behind his merciful reputation 22 23.
- Larys Strong — Recruited intelligence operative and Master of Whisperers. Baelon values his capabilities without assuming he has secured his loyalty 44 45.
- Old Katu — Elderly reed cutter whom Baelon pays to take seven days away from work after his dog’s death. Baelon later arranges for someone to receive and listen to him 13 28.
- Balerion — Pet black cat. Its reaction alerts Baelon to Larys’s presence in his bedroom 44.

“Don't slap ‘dragon’ on everything I invent!” 14
“No matter what happens, I will stand by you. I will defend everything you have.” 40
Trivia
- After naming a commoner’s baby Baelon “Number Two,” he declares himself “Number One” and publicly permits everyone in Westeros to use his name. The crowd immediately begins arguing over the numbers 14.
- He hopes that a future younger brother might be named Aemon rather than Aegon, citing its meaning, “beloved,” and the harmonious relationship of an earlier Baelon-and-Aemon pair 8.
- He imagines building a Westerosi equivalent of King Arthur’s Knights of the Round Table: a retinue of exemplary knights whose deeds bards would celebrate 9.
