Background / History
Service to House Whent
Vereword was a sellsword knight with nowhere left to turn when he first swore fealty to Davion’s mother, the Countess of House Whent. He initially entered her service to keep himself fed, with little sincerity behind his oath 13.
Nevertheless, he risked his life for her son. When Davion went to House Vance to recover a debt of one hundred gold dragons, Vereword accompanied him. After Davion drew his sword outside the castle, Raymond Vance, his two sons, and three guards attacked them. Despite suffering sword wounds, broken ribs, and severe blood loss, Vereword carried the unconscious Davion back to Harrenhal after their horses were taken. He collapsed upon reaching safety 3.
Imprisonment and Recovery
While Davion remained unconscious, Wes confined Vereword in the cold, damp prison beneath Kingspyre Tower and removed his armor and longsword. Wes claimed Harrenhal lacked enough medicine to treat both men; according to the maester, Vereword would not survive three days without treatment 3 4.
Davion found him near death and fed him a green leaf produced through Tango. Its healing effect lasted thirty seconds, closing his visible sword wounds and reversing much of his dehydration, though his broken ribs remained painful. Vereword thanked Davion on one knee and pledged to remember his kindness until death 3 4.
At Davion’s command, Vereword repeatedly slapped Wes for his insolence. He subsequently kicked Wes in the face, restrained him, and took him away in leg irons after Davion ordered the steward confined in the bear pit 4 5.
Renewed Fealty and Harrenhal’s Restoration
Still recovering, Vereword opposed Davion’s proposed return to House Vance. When Davion claimed he only intended to practice fighting and purchase grain, Vereword remained suspicious and insisted on accompanying him if he sought revenge 6.
After Davion returned with gold, a carriage, and a girl from House Vance, Vereword accepted his altered account of events. He initially refused a reward of fifty gold dragons, but Davion insisted and promised him the opportunity to become a landed knight. Deeply moved, Vereword renewed his oath of fealty. Davion stopped him from kissing his boots and offered his hand instead 12 13.
Davion then tasked him with recruiting twenty guards. After a week of searching nearby settlements, Vereword had found only five men, all notably strong and well-built. He explained that many available fighters had gone to King’s Landing for the Hand’s Tourney, prompting Davion to pursue its prize money 13 15.
The Leygood Campaign
By Davion’s return from King’s Landing, Vereword was Harrenhal’s master-at-arms and was assigned to guide Gendry’s knightly training. He also reported that House Leygood had sent Harrenhal the severed heads of five former tenant farmers, including two children. Davion ordered him to summon Karyl Vance and Grey Stone Keep’s cavalry for a retaliatory expedition 70 72.
Davion gave Vereword overall command of the operation, with Karyl assisting, while concealing himself among the infantry. At Wheatfield Village, Vereword identified Leygood troops occupying Harrenhal’s territory and blamed himself for failing to discover their encroachment. Davion rejected that blame, citing the shortage of guards available for patrols. In the ensuing cavalry clash, Vereword remained beside Davion at the center and unhorsed an opponent with a thrust 76 77 78.
At Willow Wood, Vereword and Karyl represented the force while Davion remained disguised. When fighting began, Vereword leapt from his saddle, tackled Colin Leygood from his horse, and knocked him unconscious with gauntleted punches. He handed the captive to Karyl before joining the cavalry battle. Vereword killed four enemies during the engagement, which ended with all thirty opposing light cavalrymen dead 79 80.
Vereword later accompanied Karyl to the castle gates for further negotiations. After the Leygoods surrendered their gold and supplies, Davion killed the captured lord and heir and ordered a wall of heads erected on the border 82.
Expanded Command
When new soldiers and supplies reached Harrenhal, Vereword and Pia organized their reception and accommodation. Davion placed two hundred infantry and fifty cavalrymen under Vereword’s command. Vereword was excited but apprehensive, having never commanded so large a force 86.
Davion later ordered more frequent patrols to protect farmers and livestock, authorizing lethal force against bandits and unidentified border intruders. He suggested recruiting Vereword’s younger brother if the workload became excessive and rewarded Vereword with two magical Bracers. After experiencing their effects, Vereword went to the training yard to adjust to his enhanced body 93.
Appearance
Vereword is a tall, powerfully built man in his twenties, standing a head taller than Davion 3 4 15.
- During his imprisonment, blood loss and dehydration left him pale, gaunt, and unusually light; Tango visibly restored much of his condition 3 4.
- In later service, he wears plate armor and gauntlets 80 93.
Personality
Vereword’s defining quality is his loyalty to House Whent. Although his original oath was motivated by survival, Davion’s rescue, trust, and recognition transform that obligation into wholehearted devotion. He is willing to die for his lord even while still recovering from serious injuries 6 13.
He is straightforward and readily trusts Davion. After initially questioning the account of House Vance’s sudden submission, he accepts it upon seeing the recovered gold. His refusal of a personal reward also earns Davion’s praise for his uprightness 12.
His loyalty can make him fiercely protective and brutal toward perceived threats. He punishes Wes harshly and immediately draws his sword against Eunex, fearing the dragon will harm Davion. Even after Eunex breathes fire, however, Vereword sheathes his weapon when Davion tells him to stand down 5 70 71.
As an instructor, he recognizes the limits of ordinary fighters. He prevents Gendry from entering battle without experience and explicitly warns him not to imitate Davion’s extraordinary fighting methods 80.
Abilities & Skills
Knightly Combat
Vereword’s fighting ability rests on years of training and practical technique rather than innate supernatural power 5 93.
- Mounted combat: Unhorses an enemy during the clash near Wheatfield Village and later leads cavalry against House Leygood 78 80.
- Close-quarters fighting: Tackles Colin Leygood from horseback and incapacitates him with gauntleted punches 80.
- Battlefield effectiveness: Personally kills four enemies during the destruction of the Leygood light cavalry 80.
Training and Command
As Harrenhal’s master-at-arms, Vereword recruits soldiers, supervises their training, and directs military operations 13 70 76.
- Selects recruits for strength and loyalty, though his initial recruitment drive falls short of its twenty-man target 13 15.
- Reports that his soldiers have become disciplined and strongly attached to Harrenhal 72 73.
- Assesses Gendry as promising knightly material but distinguishes physical strength from combat readiness 70 80.
- Commands Harrenhal’s two hundred infantry and fifty cavalrymen, with responsibility for castle security and territorial patrols 86 93.
Bracer-Granted Enhancement
The two Bracers strengthen Vereword’s body and provide ongoing recovery; these effects come from equipment rather than a documented personal level increase 93.
- Wearing them clears accumulated fatigue and begins repairing old wounds 93.
- Their regeneration allows subsequent injuries to heal gradually without medicine 93.
- The narration states that his combined attributes would allow him to defeat the Mountain; no such fight is shown 93.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Longsword: Taken from him by Wes during his imprisonment; Vereword later carries a longsword at his waist when confronting Eunex 4 70.
- Plate armor and gauntlets: Used during his later military service; his armored punches severely injure Colin Leygood 80 93.
- Two magical Bracers: Gifts from Davion that automatically resize to fit his wrists and grant physical attributes, health, and regeneration 93.
- Terrain map: Obtained from Harrenhal’s maester before the Leygood expedition; marks Harrenhal’s lands and villages 77.
