Background / History

Life with the Children of the Forest

Bingling lived with the Children of the Forest beyond the Wall and helped raise Gary, whom they knew as Luke. By her first appearance, he had spent twelve years among them. Before visiting Winterfell, she had also possessed the stag that carried Gary and Leaf to the Wall 21.

Her duties included monitoring the north for the Three-Eyed Crow. When his Greensight stopped revealing Gary’s whereabouts, she was reassigned to stay near him, while Leaf separately asked her to check on his welfare 21.

Watching Gary in Winterfell

Bingling reached Winterfell through a raven and detected traces of magic in Gary’s room. Believing he might have awakened a Skinchanger’s gift, she attempted to teach him possession. His powerful mana initially prevented her from entering his dreams; physical contact later allowed him to enter hers, but his consciousness still failed to leave his body independently 21 22.

After discovering Gary’s White Walker abilities, Bingling examined him and concluded that he remained human. Fearing the Greenseer would turn against him, she secretly discussed his condition with Leaf inside a dream, where Greensight could not overhear them 30.

Sacrifice and Rebirth

Bingling resolved to abandon her original body so she could remain beside Gary continuously. Rather than possess a short-lived ordinary animal or a vulnerable human, she chose a large white egg stored in the Children’s cave. She suspected it was a dragon egg after hearing a story in Winterfell about dragons visiting the Wall more than a century earlier 30.

With Leaf’s help, Bingling found a faint heartbeat within the egg and poured mana into it. Her original body died, and Leaf presented the corpse to the Three-Eyed Crow while concealing the transfer 31.

Bingling subsequently hatched as a white dragon. She instructed Leaf to place her in fire, absorbed energy from the burning cabin, and departed to protect Gary. She also warned Leaf that the Greenseer had selfish motives 34.

She reunited with Gary while he was threatened by a venomous snake and Wind Spirit’s possessed shadowcat. Bingling killed the snake, drove back the cat, and identified herself by writing in the dirt. She persuaded Wind Spirit to spare Gary, arguing that his divine power might make him their people’s last hope 39.

Highgarden, Pentos, and Valyria

Bingling later tamed the shadowcat as Gary’s bodyguard and ordered it to kill two knights who intended to murder him. When Gary gave the animal to Margaery, Bingling negotiated a supply of meat in exchange for her cooperation 58 62.

She secretly remained near Highgarden, where Margaery fed her and used the shadowcat to conceal her presence. After hearing that Gary had supposedly died en route to Pentos, Bingling flew across the sea to find him. Their reunion led directly to his assault on Pentos, during which she burned ships in the harbor 73.

Bingling accompanied Gary into the Valyrian ruins, where they recovered thirty-seven dragon eggs. Her precise fire magic then became central to their experiments in forging new Valyrian steel; after months of practice, they succeeded 83 88 91.

Guardian of the Dragons

When Gary returned to Westeros, Bingling reluctantly remained in Pentos to protect the hatchlings. She also secretly sent Drogon to the Children of the Forest with a Valyrian steel message announcing that Luke had returned and could be contacted, despite Gary’s objections to notifying the Three-Eyed Crow 96 113.

Bingling helped the Unsullied expand the Dragon Cave as the young Wingless Dragons grew. Before leaving for King’s Landing on Gary’s orders, she advised Tysha to deploy the developing dragon cavalry if Pentos needed protection from the Dothraki 261.

Battles in King’s Landing and the Reach

While waiting near Dragonstone for Gary’s signal, Bingling investigated an explosion in King’s Landing and caught his scent. Her arrival at the Red Keep broke the Gold Cloaks’ resistance: enhanced white dragonfire killed more than three hundred, and the survivors surrendered after being surrounded by ice wolves 291.

During the Sparrow uprising, she defended the Red Keep and protected Drogon and his siblings after their wings were injured. She suffered wounds from spears and swords herself, prompting her to request practical Valyrian steel armor like theirs 309 311.

In the Reach, Bingling destroyed the Ironborn fleet but suffered serious cannon wounds. Teresa spent more than ten days healing her because the injuries were difficult to treat and her dragon body resisted magic 316 325.

Bingling later fought a sea monster attacking Highgarden, switching to close combat when its ink extinguished her dragonfire. She helped evacuate Margaery and Mace Tyrell, then remained with the convoy rather than abandon its money and grain when an injured Teresa asked for immediate transport to King’s Landing 329 330 331.

Divine Office and the War against Aolixilade

During the northern battle, Bingling’s consciousness struggled against the white dragon’s original consciousness for control of their body. Gary ended that struggle after returning as the Supreme God: he destroyed the original dragon consciousness and appointed Bingling god of Dragons 353 358.

Bingling then joined Teresa and Melisandre in hunting Aolixilade. She restored the dragons’ sealed memories and sent them south before engaging Aolixilade in a battle lasting seven days and nights. After killing her opponent’s dragon body, she absorbed the fleeing soul and fell asleep while attempting to digest its divine power 360 362.

Teresa and Melisandre guarded her, and Gary later entered her consciousness to investigate the continuing struggle. Bingling was active again by the campaign against the remaining Old Gods, joining Gary, her companions, and forty-one dragons on the journey to the Arbor 363 365 379.

Appearance

  • Original body: A green-skinned, golden-eyed Child of the Forest 22.
  • Raven host: A black male raven. Its sex did not reflect Bingling’s own gender 21.
  • Dragon form: Snow-white scales, milky-white claws and horns, and wings that reflect glasslike rainbow light. Her back bears spiny fins that she can lower for a rider 83 291.
  • Divine humanoid form: A white-haired woman with snow-white skin, dragon horns, and dragon wings 358 362.
  • Divine dragon size: Nearly one hundred meters tall during her battle with Aolixilade 362.

Personality

Bingling regards Gary as a child of the entire Children of the Forest community, not Leaf’s responsibility alone. Her protectiveness drives her to surrender her original body and remaining lifespan rather than leave him vulnerable. She believes his survival is essential to defeating the White Walkers 30 39.

Despite her great age and magical experience, she can be playful, indignant, and openly affectionate. She rubs her head against Gary’s cheek, boasts about her timing, and reacts sharply when he underestimates her growth or abilities 39 58 291.

Margaery distinguishes Bingling from ordinary dragons by her rationality: she thinks before acting and prefers communication to immediate violence. That restraint does not extend to people she considers threats to Gary, whom she is willing to have killed 58 131.

Her ambitions are practical rather than personal. When Teresa proposes godhood, Bingling is more concerned with Gary uniting humanity against the White Walkers than with immortality. Food is another effective bargaining point, especially while her growing dragon body is undernourished 62 325.

Abilities & Skills

Skinchanging and Dream Access

Before her permanent transfer, Bingling could project her consciousness into other creatures and enter dreams 21 22 30.

  • Possessed both a stag and a raven 21.
  • Used dreams to share memories and communicate beyond the reach of Greensight 22 30.
  • Needed to return to her original body to maintain it; abandoned hosts regained their own consciousness 21.
  • Could not use Greensight, and permanently lost her Skinchanger abilities by abandoning her body 22 30.

Dragonfire and Precision Fire Magic

Bingling combines a dragon’s breath weapon with her extensive experience as a mage 88.

  • Burns ships and fortifications’ defenders; her harbor attack continues despite heavy rain 73 90 309.
  • Channels concentrated heat through a wing claw, melting stone and practicing the precision needed to work Valyrian steel 88 91.
  • Produces brilliant white dragonfire when empowered through Gary and the Primal Stone. Without that enhancement, her fire remains red or orange 291 316.
  • Her flames can be extinguished by the sea monster’s ink, forcing her to fight physically 329.

Flight, Strength, and Senses

Her dragon body provides aerial mobility, powerful natural weapons, and heightened sensory abilities 39 73 79.

  • Carries Gary and other passengers once sufficiently grown 83 330.
  • Tracks Gary by scent after reaching Essos 73.
  • Uses her tongue as her most sensitive organ for detecting magic, including examining dragon eggs 79.
  • Tears through giant sea creatures with her teeth and claws 329.
  • Remains vulnerable to weapons: cannonballs shatter her scales, and unarmored areas can be pierced by swords and spears 311 316.

Animal Training and Dragon Care

Bingling retains the judgment and knowledge of a Child of the Forest while inhabiting a dragon 58 131.

  • Tames the shadowcat, teaches it to recognize Gary’s scent, and later arranges for Margaery to become its master 58 62.
  • Raises Drogon and his siblings and guards the thirty-seven additional hatchlings 96 134.
  • Directs the younger dragons in battle and shields them when they are injured 309.

Languages and Writing

Bingling adapts her communication as her dragon body develops 39 58 73 291.

  • Initially relies on writing with a hooked wing claw and a few awkward True Tongue syllables 39.
  • Gradually recovers speech, progressing from halting words to fluent conversation in the Old Tongue and Westerosi Common Tongue 58 73 291.
  • Uses written messages for negotiation and long-distance contact 62 113.

Divine Powers

Her appointment as god of Dragons grants abilities beyond those of her mortal dragon body 358 360 362.

  • Chooses between humanoid and dragon forms 358.
  • Senses the dragons’ locations and restores their sealed memories 360 362.
  • Performs Spatial Transfer, though her first use nearly drops Teresa and Melisandre 362.
  • Absorbs Aolixilade’s soul; digesting its power requires sleep and an internal struggle rather than immediate assimilation 362 365.

Relationships

  • Gary / Luke — Her foster child, traveling companion, and principal concern. He later becomes the Supreme God and grants her divine office 30 39 358.
  • Leaf — Trusted companion and co-guardian of Luke. Helps conceal Bingling’s transfer and cares for the egg until it hatches 30 31 34.
  • Three-Eyed Crow — Former authority who assigned her surveillance duties. Bingling defies him to protect Luke and warns Leaf against his motives 21 30 34.
  • Wind Spirit — Fellow Child of the Forest and Skinchanger. Recognizes the sacrifice involved in her rebirth and agrees to give Gary time to grow stronger 39 40.
  • Margaery Tyrell — Secret provider of food during Bingling’s growth near Highgarden; later rides her during the Reach campaign 62 73 329.
  • Drogon, Rhaegal, and Viserion — Dragons she helps raise, discipline, and protect; they seek comfort from her when wounded 134 309.
  • Teresa and Melisandre — Divine allies who help defeat Aolixilade and guard Bingling while she devours the captured soul 362 363.
  • Aolixilade — Enemy who objects to a Child of the Forest inhabiting a dragon. Bingling ultimately destroys her dragon body and absorbs her soul 86 362.
