Background / History
Travels and Citadel Research
Marwyn spent eight years traveling through Essos in search of lost knowledge and objects. His travels included contact with the warlocks of Qarth and a visit to the fringes of the ruined Valyrian Freehold, where he obtained a rare plant later identified as the Valyrian Purple Queen 11 12 14.
While returning to Oldtown, Marwyn was wounded in the shoulder by an arrow during a pirate attack on his merchant ship. Fourteen-year-old Darean Hightower, returning from an unauthorized voyage toward Sunspear, boarded the attacked vessel and saved him. Their subsequent friendship allowed Darean to visit Marwyn’s study freely for the next two years 11.
As an archmaester and member of the Conclave, Marwyn belonged to the Citadel’s highest governing body. Nevertheless, his occult interests, reclusive habits, and contemptuous treatment of other maesters left him unpopular. His research depended on funding overseen by Seneschal Theobald, despite his boasts that he ignored the seneschal’s objections 11 12 14.
Recruitment by Darean
After acquiring his own fief, Darean asked Marwyn to recommend a capable maester to address its lack of medical care. Marwyn had no suitable candidate, prompting Darean to ask the archmaester himself to come. Marwyn initially resisted: the appointment was far beneath the usual standing of a Conclave member, and leaving would interrupt his research 11 12.
His immediate research problem concerned the Purple Queen. Although the Citadel had financed its cultivation, none of its seeds would germinate. Marwyn had spent at least a thousand gold dragons keeping the original plant alive and hoped to use his remaining funding to import expensive materials from Lys 11 12.
Darean wagered that he could produce a viable seed in exchange for Marwyn’s service. Using Garth Greenhand’s Gift, he broke the foreign magic preventing germination and made the seed take root in his palm. Marwyn, who had never previously witnessed true magic despite his lifelong studies, watched in astonishment 13.
Marwyn honored the wager under the witness of the Seven, while insisting that he wanted to understand Darean’s power. He departed Oldtown with Darean and Clyson two days later. His departure attracted little concern at the Citadel; Theobald welcomed the reduction in research expenses 14.
Appearance
Marwyn is an elderly, short, stout man whose sturdy build and energetic movements contrast with his age 11.
- Hair and beard: An unkempt, grizzled beard 11 12.
- Eyes: Brown 11 14.
- Face and hands: A slablike jaw and thick, carrot-like fingers 11 12.
- Clothing: Mouse-gray robes and a heavy maester’s chain 11.
- Voice: Slightly deep, with an audible weariness of age 11.
Personality
Marwyn is eccentric, blunt, and frequently irreverent. He dismisses other maesters as “grey sheep,” keeps a shabby, disorderly study, and enjoys teasing Darean. His fondness for watching political complications unfold persists even after those complications become his own responsibilities 11 14 38 45.
His pursuit of knowledge is unusually tenacious. He risks dangerous travel, spends heavily on uncertain research, and remains determined to propagate the Purple Queen despite repeated failures. Once Darean demonstrates genuine magic, the prospect of accompanying him to an impoverished village becomes no obstacle at all 12 14.
Beneath the mockery, Marwyn is protective of Darean and takes his obligations seriously. Before losing their wager, he offers to intercede with Leyton if Darean’s settlement fails; afterward, he keeps his oath and promptly begins assessing the fief’s needs 13 14 18.
Abilities & Skills
Magic and Occult Scholarship
Marwyn’s Valyrian steel chain link signifies his mastery of magic and the occult as a scholarly discipline 11.
- Recognizes Darean’s magical demonstration as something beyond ordinary explanation 13.
- Understands that a burning Glass Candle indicates the presence of magic 29.
- Knows that ordinary fire cannot light a Glass Candle 37.
- Limitation: He cannot resonate with magic during Darean’s demonstration; no personal spellcasting is documented 13.
Medicine and Herbalism
Marwyn supplies the practical medical expertise Darean’s settlement initially lacks 19.
- Collects local medicinal plants immediately after reaching the fief 18 19.
- Requests a dedicated room and an assistant to prepare basic medicines 19.
- Maintains an herb garden where the revived Purple Queen develops into a seedling 30.
- Identifies large quantities of hallucinogenic substances in shade of the evening 11.
Administration and Political Advice
Marwyn helps manage the settlement during its early development and recognizes the political risks attached to outside assistance 22 38.
- Recommends limiting an initial intake from Oldtown to thirty people so the settlement can absorb them 22.
- Advises requesting a steward, grain, iron ingots, and gold dragons rather than excessive outside manpower 22.
- Coordinates with the steward to conceal sensitive industries from Margaery Tyrell 38 39.
- Handles raven correspondence and receives permission to read incoming letters when necessary 44.
Wilderness Experience
Eight years of travel make Marwyn highly capable outside settled surroundings 14 18.
- Surveys Darean’s lands with three men as guides immediately upon arrival 18.
- Darean considers his wilderness survival skills far superior to his own 18.

Story Role / Major Arcs
Establishing New Land Village
- On arrival, Marwyn immediately surveys the territory and then gathers medicinal plants to begin addressing its healthcare problems 18 19.
- He chooses New Land Village as the settlement’s name from the suggestions presented to Darean 20.
- He helps draft the request for Hightower aid, balancing the need for skilled workers against Darean’s fear of losing control to incoming retainers 22.
- Darean tasks him with organizing large granaries on high ground outside the eastern wall before the construction workforce arrives 27.
The Glass Candle’s Awakening
- While Marwyn works with herbs, his apprentice sees a purplish-red flame briefly appear on his Glass Candle. Marwyn misses the ignition but recognizes its significance and suspects a connection to Darean 29.
- He questions Darean about repeated visits to the castle foundations, but Darean redirects the conversation toward construction plans 30.
- A later ignition also escapes his notice. On learning that the apprentice failed to report it, Marwyn angrily explains the candle’s rarity and unusual nature 35 37.
Margaery Tyrell’s Visit
- Marwyn and the steward prepare to present New Land Town as a chaotic, poorly managed domain while restricting Margaery’s access to revealing information 38.
- They halt the blast furnace and suppress evidence of local iron production before her arrival 39.
- When Margaery asks why an archmaester would serve Darean, Marwyn attributes his decision to divine guidance and refuses further explanation 40.
The Oldtown Crisis
- Marwyn receives the alarming correspondence about events at the Hightower and discreetly brings it to Darean, excluding Margaery from the discussion 44.
- He reasons that the reported smell of blood implies a death at the tower’s summit, raising the possibility that Moroia has been harmed. He then joins Darean and the steward in discussing their response 45.
- Darean orders him to maintain constant contact with Oldtown as the magical crisis worsens 48.
- He remains part of Darean’s leadership consultations when Darean decides to seek support from Three Towers 50.
