Background / History

Previous Life and Inheritance

Fang Yan entered the Pokémon world while playing Pokémon Scarlet and Violet. After spending a day accepting his situation, he intended to obtain a starter and travel as a Trainer. Xia Lan then contacted him about an inheritance from Fang Moli, his new body’s late great-aunt and only blood-related relative 1.

Fang Moli’s unsuccessful businesses and debts had left only a plot in Twinleaf Town, including a dilapidated house and former Day Care facilities. Fang Yan initially planned to sell the land to fund his journey, but a system objective prompted him to reconsider. He moved into the house and discovered that its apparent haunting came from a lonely Gengar 1.

His memories of his previous family remain important to him. During Mid-Autumn Festival, he recalls watching the stars with his parents and older sister; much later, his Pokémon recognize that he still misses his original home 29 555.

Reopening the Pokémon Day Care

Fang Yan befriended Gengar through food, shared videos, and companionship. He also treated the three Machamp who cleaned the property to dinner and offered to help them if they ever needed it. When they later arrived hungry, he immediately welcomed and fed them 3 11.

His great-aunt’s wishes and Gengar’s companionship became his reasons for renovating the Day Care. He developed plans for boarding, Pokémon Egg sales, herbal tea, and food therapy based on Fang Moli’s recipes, eventually receiving his first boarding customer 18 19.

Fang Moli’s old Pokémon friends also returned. Ninetales entrusted an Egg to him before leaving to travel, while Banette later visited and recognized him as the Day Care’s new owner. Fang Yan came to understand the relationships surrounding the property as his great-aunt’s most important legacy 25 197.

Community and Public Career

The Day Care developed into a gathering place for children, townspeople, visiting Trainers, Champions, and wild Pokémon. Fang Yan organized performances and shared meals, including Twinleaf Town’s celebration and a Christmas gathering attended by numerous League figures 143 342.

His practical methods attracted the attention of Professors Rowan and Oak. At a research summit, his work on dietary therapy, Mega Evolution, Z-Moves, and emotional bonds earned first place. Oak and Rowan named him a Pokémon Professor specializing in bonds and emotions 213 473 474.

Despite that recognition, Fang Yan dislikes publicity. Cynthia had Lucian remove his name from reports of several major incidents, leaving Team Flare’s investigators with little beyond his ordinary identity as a Day Care owner 544.

Appearance

  • Black-haired young man: Agatha describes him this way when Professor Oak introduces them 526.
  • Family resemblance: Banette and an elderly acquaintance of Fang Moli notice similarities between Fang Yan and his great-aunt 197 508.
  • Unmuscular build: Before battling Mustard, he considers removing his shirt in imitation of his opponent, then notes that he has no muscles to show 465.
  • Battle accessories: Wears a Z-Ring and carries a Key Stone set into a wooden pendant 415 473.

Personality

Fang Yan considers the Day Care’s Pokémon family rather than subordinates. He prioritizes their happiness, interests, and choices: he teaches the battle-averse Mime Jr. to cook, reassures Vulpix that evolution is its own decision, and accepts responsibility when Dali damages property. He believes genuine affection should be met with trust, not demands for strength alone 62 70 121 148 160.

He enjoys quiet afternoons, cooking, and relaxing with his Pokémon, but is also mischievous, theatrical, and easily drawn into playful arguments. Gengar recognizes when he is plotting something, while Gothitelle and Ninetales regularly discipline him for his antics. Beneath that childishness, his Pokémon regard him as dependable 230 272 362 604.

As a teacher, he can be blunt. He challenges Paul’s dismissive treatment of Pokémon, rejects Alain’s fixation on Mega Evolution, and deliberately confronts Ash’s complacency. He nevertheless worries when his criticism hurts Ash and sends Gengar to check on him 195 484 520.

Abilities & Skills

His specialty is understanding Pokémon’s emotions and supporting the lives they want to lead 160.

  • Uses play and wrestling to relieve stress while teaching willing Pokémon how to apply their strength 213.

Cooking, Gourmet Critical Hit, and Dietary Therapy

Fang Yan combines his own cooking ability with recipes inherited from Fang Moli. His food can trigger beneficial buffs and improve moods 17 19.

Fang Yan commands Champion-level Pokémon, although other Champions initially consider his official battle experience comparatively limited 420.

  • Mega Evolution: Uses it with Gengar and Latias 181 413.
  • Bonds across time and space: His connection with Gengar sustains Mega Evolution while they are separated across different times during the Arceus crisis 475.
  • Z-Moves: Uses Inferno Overdrive with Ninetales and Bloom Doom with Lilligant. Cynthia identifies Z-Moves as a particular strength of his battle style 288 474 582.
  • Adaptable instruction: Diagnoses Ash’s overreliance on speed after several partners grow heavier or evolve 230.
  • Legendary command: Directs Legendary allies in battle; he considers Lugia’s aggressive style especially compatible with his own 413 492.

Wood-Carving

His inherited carving techniques produce emotionally significant gifts rather than ordinary decorations 103.

  • Slightly improve Pokémon’s moods.
  • Carry wishes that greatly reduce their likelihood of falling into low spirits.
  • Allow his Pokémon to locate his direction, reinforcing the idea that wherever he is, they have a home 103.

Human–Pokémon Cooperation

Fang Yan builds working relationships with wild Pokémon as well as Trainers 375 511.

  • Acts as an intermediary for cooperation involving Zangoose and Seviper around Twinleaf Town and Sandgem Town 375 510.
  • Works with Oak and Rowan on recommendations for suitable wild Pokémon partners in different regions 511.
  • Recognizes that his local approach cannot simply be copied elsewhere: hostility between species and reliance on the Day Care’s authority must be considered 510 511.

Association with Fang Yan does not always mean formal capture; several Pokémon form deep bonds with him before entering a Poké Ball 124.
