Obviously, You Don't Even Recognize an AC Condenser... Huh?
"No, I just asked Jiang. Boss Shen hasn't gone back yet. He's inching along with the traffic, so he should be there soon. Let's hurry back and get in line too!"
The college students had come quickly, and they ran off just as quickly once they were done.
The quicker customers had moved their cars before the traffic police caught them. The slower ones could only pay their fines, and when they returned, they formed a stark contrast to the cheerful college students.
"I have sinned. I repent. Next time, I'll definitely park in the underground lot a few hundred meters away."
"I paid a fine, moved my car, and stood in line under the sun, and the stall owner still isn't here. I'm seriously done."
Some customers clutched their crumpled tickets, frowning at the painful expense and unable to keep from muttering under their breath.
"Which dumbass started the double-parking? This is my first time parking here. I saw so many people doing it that I thought it was allowed. Two hundred yuan! That could've bought me so many scallion pancakes!"
The traffic police hadn't expected so many people on the food street today either. Could there be some event or performance that hadn't been reported?
Wasn't this just adding to their workload?
So, spotting people heading into the food street, one officer stopped someone at random and asked, "Is there some event on the food street today? Why are so many people coming?"
The college student he questioned looked up, bewildered. "I don't think so. We're here to buy food."
The students beside him chimed in that they were here to buy food too.
The officer glanced at them, then turned to the middle-aged man and elderly men and women nearby. "Are you here to buy food on the food street too?"
"Yes!"
Though they didn't understand, everyone nodded earnestly in reply.
Their confirmation only puzzled the officer further. They had been to this area before. It was no different from the night markets and stalls nearby, and the food here was available elsewhere too. Since when had it drawn such a crowd?
"It's because there's a new stall. The chive pockets and scallion pancakes he makes are really good."
Everyone else agreed. They were all here for the scallion pancakes.
From the elderly to little children, everyone in the crowd was heading into the food street.
At that, the officer understood. So a skilled new stall owner had arrived on the food street, causing a sudden surge in customers that had led to today's traffic jam.
Once he understood the reason, he had no time to chat. There was still some work to wrap up.
Still, he made a mental note of it.
When he had time after work, he would come try it too.
In all his years on the job, he had never seen a roadside stall draw enough people to clog a food street and cause a traffic jam.
Just as the customers were wearing their eyes out waiting, Jiang Wenyan finally brought Shen Chuan's stall safely to the food street.
Because the three-wheeler had changed so drastically, no one noticed it at first. Only when it passed the line and some sharp-eyed customers spotted Shen Chuan sitting inside through the clear tempered glass did they dare confirm that Boss Shen had arrived.
"Everyone, look! Boss Shen's three-wheeler is here! It's that fully enclosed one that doesn't look like a vending cart!"
The customers had long since wilted from waiting, hunger, and heat. Some stood, while others squatted there. At those words, they perked up again and rose to their feet.
"Thank goodness, Boss Shen is finally here! Any later and I'd have gotten heatstroke!"
"Hungry and baking in the sun, but still unwilling to leave. Who understands how that feels?"
"Can we finally get started?" Even Wen Yang let out a sigh of relief.
As a food blogger who occasionally appeared on camera, he had to mind his image, so he had dressed quite carefully before leaving home. Now, with his short-sleeved shirt sticking to his back from the heat, he could only look enviously at the elderly man beside him in a tank top and beach shorts.
"Strange. Why does Boss Shen's cart look completely different?"
Seeing that the comfortable cart had been modified, the customers all looked curious. Those words drew the attention of the people nearby, who all turned their gazes toward the three-wheeler.
By then, Jiang Wenyan had already driven the three-wheeler up to the stall's spot.
A sharp-eyed customer spotted the outdoor AC unit mounted on the back. He froze for two seconds, then nudged his friend. "Is that thing an AC condenser?"
"Obviously. You don't even recognize an AC condenser... huh?"
Halfway through speaking, his friend suddenly caught on. "Holy shit, don't tell me Boss Shen modified his cart like this just to install air conditioning?!"
"No way. Who installs air conditioning on a night market stall?" A customer farther back had also spotted the condenser and muttered.
Just then, the cart finished parking. Shen Chuan opened the glass window at the front of the stall, flipped it upward, and secured it. A wave of cool air spilled through the opening and swept over the people at the front.
In such sweltering weather, that little bit of cool air was like ice water in a desert or a heater in winter, making several customers' eyes light up.
So cool, so refreshing!
Several customers craned their necks to peer inside the three-wheeler. When they saw the vehicle air conditioner mounted on its right side, they were stunned.
It looked less like an ordinary three-wheeler and more like a small mobile glass shop. Well sealed and fitted with air conditioning, it was no different from running a little store. The difference was that a store couldn't move, while this stall could go anywhere.
"He actually installed air conditioning. Does this still count as a roadside stall?"
"This is the first time I've ever seen someone bring their own air conditioning to a night market stall."
"Boss Shen really knows how to enjoy himself. It's so much cooler standing up front!"
As they spoke, the customers couldn't help shaking out their sweat-soaked shirts in the cool breeze, enjoying the refreshing air.
With the air conditioning, Shen Chuan didn't feel hot today either. Wearing suit trousers and leather shoes, he stood there looking full of energy, waiting for Jiang Wenyan to get everything arranged for him.
Seeing the customers crowd around to inspect the newly modified three-wheeler, he calmly remarked.
"Only a comfortable environment lets you focus on cooking. The air conditioning is there so I can make perfect food even better. You understand, right?"
[Ding! Show-off Points +50!]
There was nothing wrong with those words on their own, but paired with Shen Chuan's expression, they came across as quite a show-off.
The regular customers' happy smiles froze for a moment, and they wished they could slap themselves.
How had they forgotten Boss Shen's habit of showing off again?!
Every time they spoke to Boss Shen, they had to watch him show off. They really couldn't say a word. They wanted to complain but didn't dare, because he had their stomachs in his grip!
"Boss Shen really does have standards. No wonder his pancakes taste like no one else's."
"Exactly. I've tried several scallion pancake places these past two mornings, and none were as good as Boss Shen's!"
The neighboring stall owners heard the exchange too, and the corners of their eyes twitched. What normal street vendor installed air conditioning on a three-wheeler? Not a single other stall in all of Linyang City did anything like this.
Apparently, he was the only one in the world with standards, needing air conditioning even to run a stall!
Besides, wasn't the whole point of running a street stall to save on costs and make work convenient? If he wanted comfort, why not open a shop? A shop would have everything.
The owner next door watched Shen Chuan sitting there like a lord, enjoying the air conditioning while leaving all the odd jobs to someone else, with a huge crowd of customers in front of his stall singing his praises. He practically oozed sour envy.
