Background / History
Fall of the Mu Household’s Genius
Mu Yan was once the Mu Household’s celebrated prodigy. His cultivation subsequently regressed, and the energy he absorbed disappeared without explanation. Admiration turned into ridicule, prompting him to leave. He later learned that Elder Li had been absorbing his energy and causing the decline 7.
After joining Kunlun Holy Land, Mu Yan received the Flame God Instruction from Ye Chen. Ye Chen also transformed his innate supreme-grade Fire Spirit Root into the Flame Spirit Saint Physique, raising his aptitude from Immortal Grade to Emperor Grade 7 19.
Return and Separation from the Household
With Ye Chen’s permission and Zhang Laosi’s protection, Mu Yan returned for the household tournament. He challenged the younger generation together, defeated them in a single exchange, and rejected both the championship and its rewards. His purpose was to reclaim his dignity rather than resume leadership of the household 7 9 10.
He subsequently killed Jin Hao with one palm strike. When Jin Hao’s accompanying elder threatened the entire household, several elders and Mu Kun demanded Mu Yan’s death to protect themselves. Zhang Laosi killed the attacker at Mu Yan’s request 15.
Mu Yan brought Mu Lei and Gu Yingluo to Kunlun, where Ye Chen permitted them to remain. Gu Yingluo became Ye Chen’s second direct disciple, making the engaged couple fellow disciples. Mu Yan severed his ties with the original Mu Household and ceased concerning himself with its fate 17 18 19 471.
Gold and Jade Sect Conflict
Ye Chen criticized Mu Yan for treating the Gold and Jade Sect as a threat he had to face alone. He taught him that a direct disciple represented all of Kunlun and should not passively wait for enemies to attack 18.
During their subsequent expedition, Mu Yan and Yingluo used Ye Chen’s protective stone to kill a Spirit Transformation expert, secured compensation from hostile households, and proceeded to the Gold and Jade Sect. Mu Yan also used technique-bearing pebbles to overwhelm a Void Refinement expert 38 41.
Secret Realm Expedition
Drawn by the Heavenly Emperor Divine Flame’s resonance, Mu Yan sought flame-related opportunities inside a secret realm. After Nine Yang Sect disciples attacked him over Mystic Yang Treasure Fruits, he killed them and their leader Ouyang Yu. He also killed the two women who had deliberately redirected their pursuers toward him 100 101.
He refined Fire Hell’s flames and absorbed the Holy Spirit True Fire, then defeated further Nine Yang Sect attackers. Later, he joined Yingluo, Su Jian, Zixing, Ziyue, and Qin Haoran against an Otherworldly Demon that was harvesting cultivators’ blood. Their attacks barely injured it, and they prepared to fight to the death before Elder Ling Xue arrived 104 105 114.
Genius Battles and Interworld Travels
Mu Yan defeated the Divine Firmament Holy Son and Heaven-Burning Holy Maiden during the East Victory Genius Battle and became its champion. His victory spread Kunlun’s reputation across the Desolate Immortal Great World 172 176 177.
In a later tournament, he overwhelmed the Immortal Emperor’s son Chi Xuntian by revealing his Mahayana cultivation. During another expedition, he became the sole young overlord of a different great world in less than two months. Holy lands pursuing his supposed inheritance repeatedly sent stronger attackers, forcing him into prolonged battles before his retaliation finally deterred them 323 469.
Golden Crow Great World
Mu Yan formed a traveling team with cultivators he had met while competing over an Immortal Emperor’s tomb. Their travels brought him to the Lu Household, where he cultivated beneath a Fusang Divine Tree and exchanged a temporary golden fire lotus for unrestricted cultivation access 701 702.
When powerful Immortal Kings sought his flame, Mu Yan proposed regulated arena matches to prevent them from exploiting their numbers or cultivation advantage. He defeated Lu Jing through physical strength and overwhelmed Lu Zhou with his divine flame 707 708 709 710.
His gifted flame helped Lu Tian become an Immortal Emperor, earning Mu Yan honored-guest status. When other Immortal Emperors attempted to seize his flame, Ye Chen intervened and killed them. Ye Chen then obtained five Fusang Divine Trees for Mu Yan’s cultivation, enabling his advance to Alternative Dao Attainment. Subsequent sparring with Lu Tian helped him master the new power 712 713 714 716 718 719.
Void Kun Conflict and Later Service
At the Void Kun Genius Battle, Mu Yan defeated Gu Xinghui despite the latter’s dragon transformation, curse techniques, and powerful attacks. He subsequently fought Vast Sea Sect experts, killing Heavenly Emperor opponents despite remaining a peak Immortal Emperor himself 873 874 875 879 905 906.
After Kunlun’s ascent to the Heavenly Divine Realm, Mu Yan helped Ling Kong address the sect’s first tournament and announced opportunities for its top ten competitors to receive direct-disciple guidance. He later endured prolonged training against the Divine Martial Saint Emperor alongside Yingluo, emerging severely injured after gradually adapting to Saint Emperor pressure 1529 1535.
Upon entering the Saint Emperor Realm, he joined Luo Feng and Ye Fan in defending High Heaven Continent against an invading third-heaven Heavenly Emperor 1581.
Appearance
Mu Yan is handsome, tall, and slender, with a sturdy frame. His interworld battles leave him with a more resolute face and a sharper jawline 8 322 469 906.
- Flame mark: A mark between his brows condenses during his study of flame laws and later draws in the Holy Spirit True Fire 73 104.
- Golden eyes and flames: His eyes appear golden during combat, and golden flames can dance within his pupils 105 468.
- Tempered body: Fusang cultivation gives his body a translucent, golden-glass appearance, with flames and naturally formed runes circulating through it 703 717.
Personality
Mu Yan is proud of his position in Kunlun and treats the sect’s reputation as a personal responsibility. Ye Chen’s instruction changes his early caution into open defiance: he refuses to conceal his responsibility for killing hostile disciples and welcomes their sects’ challenges 18 102.
His treatment of others distinguishes genuine affection from opportunism. He refuses the Mu Household’s renewed favor after experiencing its contempt, yet remains deeply grateful to Ye Chen and warmly welcomes new junior disciples. He explicitly credits his achievements to his master’s guidance, physique transformation, and Kunlun’s resources rather than innate superiority 10 15 471.
Mu Yan is ruthless toward people who attack or manipulate him, but does not always regard immediate execution as adequate justice. He kills the women who tried to make him their scapegoat, while leaving the tyrannical Nangong Yang’s fate to the city’s victims 101 285.
He increasingly enjoys testing himself against stronger opponents, though he approaches such fights tactically. His arena proposal in the Golden Crow Great World prevents a group assault and forces powerful enemies to fight within agreed limits. His responsibility as eldest senior brother also motivates him to return to cultivation whenever his juniors begin overtaking him 491 707 714.
