Background / History

Arrival at Hiraku’s Home

Before meeting Hiraku, Kuro was a nameless creature who survived by wandering the forest and hunting. His solitary life changed when he encountered a female of his own kind, later named Yuki 2.

Kuro and the pregnant Yuki arrived at Hiraku’s home injured, with their forehead horns broken. Hiraku sheltered them in a storehouse, where Yuki gave birth to four puppies. The building subsequently became Kuro and Yuki’s home. Hiraku later suspected that something powerful had attacked the pair, but the cause of their injuries remained unidentified 2 3.

When Hiraku offered written names for Kuro to choose from, Kuro initially reached for “Schwarz.” Yuki pressed his head down and prompted him to choose “Kuro” instead. Hiraku interpreted his reluctant compliance as an inability to oppose his wife 2.

Growing Household

Kuro’s family helped supply Hiraku with meat and accompanied him through the forest. During the household’s early days, one member of the family was almost always beside Hiraku, which he took as a possible guard rotation 2.

After the first four puppies matured, they left to find mates. Kuro and Yuki comforted Hiraku when he realized why they had departed. All four returned, and Hiraku built the Dog Area to accommodate their expanding families. Kuro and Yuki also had a second named litter: Kuro Five through Kuro Eight 3.

Kuro helped defend the settlement against unfamiliar arrivals, including Lu and Tia. When Lu drank Hiraku’s blood, Kuro forced himself between them, treating the act as an attack. He and the other wolves ultimately accepted Lu after Hiraku welcomed her into the household 3.

Big Tree Village

Kuro attended the representatives’ meeting at which Hiraku proposed naming the settlement. As Big Tree Village developed, he and the other Infernal Wolves patrolled its surroundings and supplied meat. Flora’s arrival finally led Hiraku to learn that his supposed dogs were Infernal Wolves 4.

Kuro later served explicitly as the wolves’ racial representative. His descendants extended the village’s protection to neighboring settlements, while Kuro remained closely involved in guarding Hiraku 9 14.

He and Yuki joined Hiraku’s renewed northern hot-spring expedition alongside fifty other Infernal Wolves. During the journey, his descendants referred to his order that they avoid casualties when confronting dangerous enemies 16.

Appearance

  • Large, black-furred canine: Kuro’s doglike appearance initially concealed his identity as a magical beast from Hiraku 2 4 7.
  • Forehead horn: His horn was broken when he first arrived. It began growing again the following spring 3.
  • Seasonal horn replacement: Like the other resident Infernal Wolves, Kuro sheds and regrows his horn annually 3.
  • Expressive face and posture: Hiraku reads his wishes through looks, rubbing against him, presenting himself for attention, and bringing toys 2 3 27.

Personality

Kuro is affectionate toward Hiraku and strongly protective of him. He intervenes immediately when he believes Hiraku is being harmed, but obeys instructions to stand down even while remaining ready to attack. His concern also extends to his pack: during the northern expedition, he forbids his descendants from suffering casualties 3 16.

He is intelligent and socially responsive. He participates in choosing his name, helps calm newcomers brought home by his children, and makes his wishes understood without speech. He also shows a little vanity: after Hiraku carved a wooden boar, Kuro posed until Hiraku understood that he wanted a carving of himself 2 3.

Despite his strength, Kuro enjoys a comfortable domestic life. He naps indoors with Yuki during winter, helps monopolize the kotatsu, and eagerly seeks games and petting. On one occasion, he cuts in before Hiraku can pet another wolf, securing attention for himself first 14 17 20.

Abilities & Skills

Hunting and Combat

  • Reliable hunter: Kuro and his family catch forest prey even when Hiraku struggles to find rabbits. They also drive larger animals toward him or fetch him when a carcass is too difficult to transport 2 3.
  • Coordinated attacks: Against Lu, the wolves alternate distraction and attacks from different directions, striking and retreating rather than rushing her together. Hiraku concludes that this prevents her from recovering by drinking their blood 3.
  • Protective intervention: Kuro physically separates Lu from Hiraku when she bites his neck 3.
  • Finishing attacks: After Hiraku brings down the attacking wyvern, Kuro and the others rush to its landing place on his command to finish it off 4.
  • Increasing strength: Hiraku observes that living at the settlement has made Kuro and Yuki stronger, though no formal rank or level is given 3.

Magic and Horns

  • Magic use: Hiraku directly observes Kuro using magic, although the passage does not identify his spell or its effect 5.
  • Horn function: The wolves’ horns are described as probably functioning like magical staffs while attached; detached horns become magic items with fixed effects and attributes 22.
  • Dangerous shed horns: Testing a descendant’s horn as a spearhead produces a powerful explosion. The discovery leads the village to keep the horns out of ordinary weapons use and later employ them for fireworks 22.
  • Forest navigation: Kuro and the others guide Hiraku home when he loses his bearings, allowing him to explore farther from his original clearing 2 5.
  • Patrols: The pack guards both the interior and exterior of Big Tree Village. Kuro also helps expose two concealed beastkin accompanying a visiting party 4.
  • Close protection: Kuro and Yuki stay nearest Hiraku within a coordinated guard arrangement involving other wolves, spiders, and villagers 9.
  • Pack coordination: Kuro cooperates in discussions that limit the number of concealed guards so they can protect Hiraku without obstructing one another 9.

Intelligence and Recreation

  • Communication without speech: Kuro understands Hiraku’s instructions and communicates through gestures, barking, and expressions 2 3.
  • Board games: He can play chess well enough to leave Lu dejected for several days. Flat shogi pieces are harder for the wolves to handle 3 8.
  • Board riding and swimming: During the downhill-race preparations, Kuro rides a board down a slope, launches into the air, lands on the water, and swims ashore after sinking 15.

Relationships

  • Hiraku Machio — Protector, companion, and member of Hiraku’s family. Hiraku treasures Kuro and Yuki as companions who have been with him longer than Lu and the other humanoid residents 2 7 15.
  • Yuki — Mate. She decisively influences his name selection, shares his home, and accompanies him in protecting Hiraku 2 3 9.
  • Kuro One, Kuro Two, Kuro Three, and Kuro Four — First named litter. Kuro Three is the only female; the other three are male 2.
  • Kuro Five, Kuro Six, Kuro Seven, and Kuro Eight — Second named litter. Five and Six are male; Seven and Eight are female. Five later leads a mobile patrol unit, while Six through Eight lead teams stationed in the three satellite villages 3 14.
  • Uno — Son-in-law and Kuro Three’s mate. He becomes the pack’s tournament representative and later wins the village tournament’s knight division 9 10 15.
  • Zabuton — Fellow early resident and guardian. Their families cooperate in scouting and defense; Kuro and Zabuton also help coordinate Hiraku’s protection 5 9.
  • Lu — Initially treated as an intruder and threat to Hiraku. Kuro accepts her after Hiraku does, and later defeats her at chess 3.
