Morning.
Dugagu, Wosuo County.
Nayafaso Village.
The snow that had fallen all night.
Had finally stopped!
Yet the sun, about to rise, was firmly blocked by layer upon layer of dark clouds.
The snow-covered earth remained in the gusts of icy wind.
Shivering!
"Isn't this way too hot?"
Inside a room filled with warm air in every corner.
Kanel, who had taken off his goose-down coat and wool vest... leaving only a short-sleeved outfit, wiped the sweat from his forehead with a silk handkerchief and cursed angrily:
"Butler, turn the air conditioner down! It's too hot! Can't you see it isn't even snowing anymore? It's not cold outside at all. Are you trying to roast me to death with the temperature this high?"
Before the butler Kanel had addressed could answer.
A balding middle-aged man sitting beside Kanel spoke:
"Just what you'd expect of an import you spent three million North African francs buying from the United States, Sir Kanel. Its heating is worlds better than that lousy air conditioner in my house!"
"Exactly, exactly!"
"You can always count on Sir Kanel!"
"It's so warm!"
Seeing this, the others hurried to offer their praise as well.
"Is this air conditioner that good? I'd say it's just average! Actually, heating too well isn't a good thing either. I only turned it up a degree or two, and it nearly roasted me to death!"
Kanel waved a hand and spoke with a look of disdain.
He seemed to have forgotten how he had shown it off in front of Gabriel two days earlier.
Besides.
The corners of his mouth, which he could not control at all, had already betrayed his true thoughts.
Although Gabriel was not among those sitting before Kanel now, and they had nothing to do with the group from two days earlier.
But who were they?
To have made it this far, they might not have had particularly high intelligence, but reading faces and moods certainly came as easily as turning their hands!
You old bastard, now you're putting on airs!
What the fuck are you showing off for?
Pah, you're fucking disgusting!
If we didn't need something from you, who would bother with you?
They all grumbled inwardly.
Their inward curses were vicious, yet what came out of their mouths was:
"It really is a little too hot!"
"But it cost three million! Even that doesn't satisfy you, sir?"
"It's much better than the one at my house."
"As expected of Sir Kanel. Even an American-made air conditioner isn't good enough for you!"
They chimed in one after another.
All doing their utmost to satisfy Kanel's vanity and make him happy.
Even at the cost of belittling themselves.
"Speaking of which..."
The balding middle-aged man spoke.
When the others heard "speaking of which," they knew they were getting down to business.
"Speaking of which, Sir Kanel. The people we sent out yesterday were all arrested by Sankara's lackeys. Are we still going ahead today?"
The balding middle-aged man was somewhat worried.
"Yes, this won't affect us, will it?"
"Why don't we put things on hold for a few days?"
"What if they give us up?"
"If Sankara finds out we did it, won't he come straight for us?"
The others spoke up as well, their words tinged with fear.
Because Sankara really did hold guns in his hands, and his grip was so tight that they could not find the slightest opening to infiltrate his ranks.
That last remark instantly struck a nerve with Kanel.
"He wouldn't dare!"
Kanel bellowed, the fat on his body instantly quivering three times, then continued:
"Sankara has guns, so we don't? Besides, he's sent all his elite troops to Nijia. He's probably only kept a bunch of green recruits around him, who likely can't even hold their guns steady.
"And us? Those gunmen under us-which one wasn't built up with our money? I wouldn't say one of ours could take ten of Sankara's, but four or five? I don't see any problem with that.
"If Sankara finds out later that we did it and really tries to move against us, we'll see whose guns are stronger. And I'll take the opportunity to put a pig in his place, because even a pig would make a better president than him!"
In Kanel's view.
It was only because he did not want to step into the spotlight; otherwise, he alone was qualified to be president of the Republic of Burkina.
Hearing Kanel say this, the others hurried to speak:
"Hearing you say that puts my mind at ease, Sir Kanel!"
"It's only because Sir Kanel looks down on the presidency. Otherwise, how could a bare-bottomed brat like Sankara ever have gotten his turn!"
"Exactly! Compared to Sir Kanel, Sankara isn't worth a fart!"
"Then shall we continue with our original plan today?"
Just as Kanel was spouting his wild boasts and the others were showering him with flattery.
"Master, terrible news! Something terrible has happened!"
A middle-aged man in a black tailcoat rushed into the room in a panic and spoke breathlessly:
"Master, this is bad! A whole lot of police suddenly showed up outside the village, along with a whole lot of soldiers-at least a thousand in all! There are even more than a dozen ironclad vehicles.
"The boys in the guard barely managed to stop them, but the officer leading them said you have five minutes to come out and go with them to the police station to explain what happened yesterday, or they'll open fire!"
"What!?"
Hearing the middle-aged man's words, everyone except Kanel instantly shot to their feet like springs.
From their expressions, it was clear they were very shocked, and also a little afraid.
Then.
All their gazes turned in unison toward Kanel, who was still sitting on the sofa.
Didn't you just say that if Sankara really found out we did it and dared to use force, you'd make him see that even a pig could do better than him?
You can start your performance now!
Everyone waited for Kanel's reaction and answer.
And Kanel himself?
The instant he heard that Sankara's troops had appeared at the village entrance, he felt a little surprise and panic.
But immediately afterward, only anger remained!
"An explanation? Explain what? I haven't demanded an explanation from Sankara, and he actually dares demand one from me? Does he really think becoming president means he gets the final say in this country?"
Kanel turned his furious gaze toward his butler and ordered:
"Have everyone in the guard take up their weapons and assemble at the village entrance! Today, I'll see whether Sankara really dares to open fire!"
"Boom-"
"Boom-"
"Boom-"
Just as the butler was about to answer yes.
Violent explosions suddenly rang out outside, and even the ground began to shake, followed by dense, ear-piercing gunfire and waves of screams and sounds of fighting.
"???"
"!!!"
"Sankara actually dared to open fire? How dare he? How dare he! Today, I'll fucking make him see whose guns are stronger!"
