Background / History
Saira is the daughter of a lord and the elder sister of Ainsley, who nominally administers Whitewater Valley. During her childhood, a visiting wizard rejected her father’s wine, smashed the cup, and froze the dining table. Her father’s inability to challenge him left her with an early example of wizards using their power to intimidate ordinary people 237 242.
As a northern patrol officer, Saira serves a region whose patrol force numbers fewer than five hundred people across seven territories. Her duties include suppressing bandits, settling village disputes, and taking part in annual border patrols and skirmishes with remaining barbarian tribes. A month before traveling with Lin Ze, she suffered a minor shoulder wound from a hoe while breaking up a boundary dispute between two villages 240 242.
Appearance
Saira has short hair and gray eyes. Her usual patrol clothing includes leather armor and a curved sword worn at her waist 243 248 281.
- Patrol attire: Recognizable enough that travelers greet her on the road; she considers her armor conspicuous when entering the royal capital 256 258.
- Civilian clothing: In the capital, she wears a short grayish-brown coarse-cloth outfit and ties her hair back with a fabric strip 260.
- Bearing: Her face appears noticeably less stern while asleep than during her working day 241.
Personality
Saira is blunt, practical, and accustomed to hardship. She accepts coarse travel rations without complaint and argues that Whitewater Valley’s residents must prepare to relocate rather than wait for the encroaching forest to destroy their homes. Although willing to help, she makes clear that the patrol cannot indefinitely shield them from their territorial lord 239 240.
She questions Constantine’s witch hunts because they risk worsening relations between the kingdom and wizards, while many of those arrested are merely herbalists or supposed mediums. Her skepticism toward royal policy later extends to assessing the practical weaknesses in Arthur’s claim to the throne: his lack of palace access, troops, and dependable allies 237 265.
Her guarded manner softens around Lin Ze. She trusts her instincts when rejecting his joking claim to be a murderous dark wizard, asks persistent questions about magical education, and respects his reluctance to discuss parts of his childhood. Her concern also appears in small gestures, such as bringing him hot chestnut cakes and sharing her remaining bread with Arthur 240 242 243 257 260.
Abilities & Skills
Swordsmanship and Patrol Training
Saira carries a scimitar and has experience leading patrol personnel 240.
- Her training includes running, sword practice, mountain climbing, weighted running, and mock battles 242.
- She previously led a squad pursuing mounted bandits through an abandoned quarry village 240.
- Arthur repeats a rumor that a northern female patrol officer can sever seven heads in succession. His identification of Saira embarrasses her, but the feat is not demonstrated in the provided events 257.
- Against the swamp creatures, she accepts Lin Ze’s instruction to remain inside the watchtower rather than join a fight beyond her capabilities 247.
Fieldcraft and Navigation
Saira’s patrol experience makes her a capable guide through the North 240.
- Recognizes recent human activity from fresh wood ash and knife-cut firewood in abandoned ruins 240.
- Knows local routes, sheltered campsites, and the tunnels once used by quarry workers 240.
- Handles her pony on difficult terrain and muffles its ears before crossing an area frequented by bandits 240.
- Uses maps and reed markers to navigate unfamiliar country and swamp paths 242 243 256.
- Builds a makeshift roof from branches and prepares food using techniques learned from a patrol veteran 250.
- Acknowledges her limits: before the eastern expedition, she warns Lin Ze that she does not know the Eastern Tribe’s territory 249 250.
Script Recognition and Investigation
Saira contributes clues that Lin Ze cannot identify alone 245 246.
- Distinguishes soldiers’ and workers’ footprints from smaller barefoot prints inside the watchtower 245.
- Reads the eastern tribal script spelling “Morgana”, explaining that eastern farmers sometimes use it in land deeds 246.
- Notices the watchtower’s magic circle spreading outward 247.
- Identifies an iron emblem as belonging to an eastern lord’s household 251.
Contacts and Political Support
Saira uses local acquaintances and knowledge of royal administration to assist the group in the capital 260 261 264.
- Offers to bring Lin Ze into the palace as her attendant during an official report on the North 260.
- Obtains a rough palace-perimeter map through an acquaintance who formerly worked there 261.
- Rents a courtyard house in a craftsmen’s district as a safer alternative to the inn 264.
- Helps Arthur approach veteran ministers and reports signs of growing royal surveillance 267 273.

- Pony — Chosen for its steadiness on mountain trails and in marshes, although it is easily frightened 240 257.

- Tall leather boots and reed markers — Supplied by Old Matt to protect against leeches and mark a return route through Bitterwater Swamp 242.

- Galleon keepsake — Receives an unaltered Galleon from Lin Ze at their farewell and carefully tucks it inside her clothes 281.

- Lin Ze — Initially recruits him through a bargain; their journey develops into mutual trust and personal warmth. She supports his work in the capital and embraces him before his departure 238 243 260 281.
- Colin — Whitewater Valley’s chief. She obtains his ancestral bone, secures tax relief for the valley, and offers patrol assistance to residents willing to relocate 237 239.
- Old Matt — A prior acquaintance near Bitterwater Swamp who provides supplies, a map, protective boots, and advice for the expedition 241 242.
- Arthur — Traveling companion and later political ally. She helps him contact former royal officials during his bid for the throne 257 265 267 273.
- Sirius — Helps shelter him after his rescue from the palace and works alongside him in the effort to support Arthur 264 265.
- Morgana — Puts Saira to sleep at Crow Valley’s entrance and impersonates her while confronting Lin Ze 252 254.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Whitewater Valley and the Watchtower Bargain
Saira first meets Lin Ze after he defeats Ainsley’s armed men in the granary. Seeking the rumored Dragonborn, she asks him to investigate disappearances around an abandoned northern watchtower. Guards, craftsmen, and villagers have vanished, while three returned investigators have gone mad 236 237 238.
She offers the ancestral bone promised to him by Whitewater Valley’s chief as a down payment. Before leaving, she secures a further thirty-percent reduction in the valley’s grain levy and offers to help relocate residents threatened by the Black Forest 238 239.
Bitterwater Swamp
Saira guides Lin Ze north, arranges supplies through Old Matt, and accompanies him into Bitterwater Swamp. Their overnight campsite proves to be the back of a giant turtle, which carries them farther through the swamp 240 241 242 244.
At the watchtower, she translates Morgana’s name within an unfamiliar formation and later notices the circle expanding. Lin Ze handles the attacking monsters and extracts her with Apparition when hostile water lilies threaten to trap them. A hidden passage bearing the same name prompts the pair to seek answers in the East 246 247 248 249.
Crow Valley
At Crow Valley’s entrance, Saira remains with the pony while Lin Ze investigates alone. Morgana puts her to sleep and takes her appearance; the apparent Saira who follows Lin Ze into the stone house is therefore an impostor, not Saira herself 251 252.
After his meeting with Morgana, Lin Ze returns to the real Saira and wakes her. They then set out for the royal capital 254 255.
Arthur’s Rise and Farewell
After meeting Arthur on the road, Saira assists the group in the capital with warnings, information, and accommodation. Following Sirius’s rescue, she joins Arthur in approaching veteran ministers while Lin Ze and Sirius prepare the Sword in the Stone 257 260 261 264 265 273.
After Arthur becomes king, Saira tells Lin Ze and Sirius that Constantine’s sons have been sent to southern estates. Learning that the two wizards are leaving that day, she gives them a flask of liquor, hugs Lin Ze, and accepts a Galleon as a memento 281.
