Discussing the move
When they returned to Chi Qing's little apartment that evening and saw the spoils of her recent shopping sprees, Yue Meifen, for once, said little.
That evening, Chi Qing briefly told her parents that she had quit her job. Although they both felt that having a job was more secure, they ultimately said little. After all, in the two elders' minds, she already had twenty million in hand, and the interest alone would be more than enough to live on for a lifetime.
The three of them then started talking about moving, when Yue Meifen suddenly said, "Oh, no, we can't move in." Chi Qing was bewildered, and Chi Yongliang looked visibly disappointed.
"Why, Mom?" Beside her, Chi Yongliang also perked up his ears, waiting for the answer.
"Have you forgotten? You just bought a whole bunch of appliances for our place. They're all new! I've only used them for a few days. We can't be so wasteful." Yue Meifen's answer left Chi Qing not knowing whether to laugh or cry. Even someone who was usually so sensible could have a foolish moment.
"Mom, are you kidding? Who gives up a house worth millions over appliances worth tens of thousands?" Chi Qing nearly laughed herself sick. "Besides, those appliances won't break just because you aren't using them. If you're really worried, you can split your time between the two places. Whenever you miss the village, go back and stay a few days. It's not like we're never going back."
"Oh, that's true. My brain only works in fits and starts," Yue Meifen said. "Living in both places-that sounds good," Chi Yongliang hurriedly chimed in beside her, his anxiety finally easing. This old woman nearly scared me to death. I almost thought I wouldn't get to live in the big villa.
The three of them then discussed the move. Yue Meifen wanted to bring every last pot, bowl, and pan, but in the end, Chi Qing made the final call: they would move nothing except the necessities.
After all, both properties were already move-in ready and very tastefully decorated. Bringing more things over could easily spoil the decor. They only needed to hire cleaners for a deep clean.
They would keep everything in the current apartment, too. Who knew when it might come in handy?
Well, the economic base determined the superstructure. Whoever controlled the purse strings called the shots, so after a few mutters, Yue Meifen could only obediently go along.
That evening, Chi Qing booked a cleaning team online, planning to have both properties thoroughly deep-cleaned. After airing them out for a day as well, they could move straight in.
Hearing the elderly couple still whispering about something in the next room, Chi Qing knew they probably would not be able to sleep that night. But what did it matter? They were happy. Even losing sleep was worth it.
When she got up the next morning, Chi Qing saw that her parents were still asleep. She glanced at the balance on her phone. Her rating was still 1.0, and her balance was 9.84 million.
How should I spend this money? Chi Qing realized that, if she could not spend recklessly, then for an ordinary office worker like her, spending a large sum of money was actually a job in itself, and a difficult one at that.
After all, Chi Qing had never had any investment experience, nor did she have any avenues for spending big money. Of course, this was still a sweet burden of the humblebragging variety! (The author screamed inwardly: I want a job spending money like this, too!!)
She went out to buy breakfast. Yue Meifen and Chi Yongliang were already up, and after the three of them ate, the cleaning team arrived.
Yue Meifen insisted that there were lots of valuable ornaments in the villa and that they had to go keep an eye on things. Left with no choice, Chi Qing took her parents over. After she explained the cleaning requirements and things to watch out for to the team, Yue Meifen and Chi Yongliang stayed at the villa to supervise.
Chi Qing checked the time and saw that it was still early. Just as she was wondering what to do that day, her phone rang. It was Wang Xiaoyan.
