Background / History
Life beside Chen Xia
Huang Qingyue’s father sent her to attend to Chen Xia after believing that the National Preceptor had taken a liking to her. Initially embarrassed and deferential, she spent her first night with him playing Chinese chess rather than performing the intimate service she had expected 22.
As his maid, she became comfortable enough to call him “Brother Chen.” Their chess games developed into contests of invented rules: when Chen Xia sent his general out to capture pieces, she countered by moving a horse twice and calling it a blood-sweating heavenly steed. They also flew a kite inside the imperial palace, with Chen Xia supplying the wind 23.
Chen Xia eventually left the imperial city during a snowstorm. Huang Qingyue found his farewell letter and a snowman that collapsed to reveal the Mystic Primordial Dao Chapters, giving her the means to cultivate 23.
Waiting and reunion
During Chen Xia’s absence, Song Wei named her Moon Consort and granted her standing above a first-rank civil official. The title reflected her connection to Chen Xia; Song Wei also came to suspect that her unchanged appearance meant she had inherited his cultivation teachings 26.
She remained in the imperial city, cultivating and tending a miniature peach tree. When Chen Xia returned after fifty years apart, the tree blossomed as he appeared on her wall. Huang Qingyue tearfully asked why he had not taken her with him, then was delighted to learn that he intended to remain in the city 27 28.
Their relationship became openly romantic after Chen Xia formed his Golden Core. Huang Qingyue kept watch outside his home throughout the process, bringing two skewers of candied hawthorn each day so she could share one with him if he emerged. They subsequently shared a kiss, and she began learning swordsmanship 29.
Defending his seclusion
When Chen Xia entered an underground cultivation chamber, Huang Qingyue vowed to guard him. She later refused to disturb him despite the old immortal’s threats, fearing that an interruption might harm his cultivation 29 30.
She attacked the old immortal when he approached the chamber, but he broke her sword and wounded her. After a gaunt overseas Qi refiner proposed using her body as a possession vessel, she launched her empowered broken blade at him. The old immortal intercepted it before Chen Xia emerged and intervened 30.
Following the battle, Huang Qingyue checked Chen Xia for injuries despite being hurt herself. He tended to her and told her to flee rather than face such an opponent again. Her finite lifespan also became an important reason for his decision to prepare for eventual ascension instead of remaining indefinitely in the lower world 31.
Recruitment by the Ninth Mountain
After Huang Qingyue reached Golden Core, Shen Ying descended from the Ninth Mountain to recruit her. Huang Qingyue initially refused because Shen Ying would not allow Chen Xia to accompany her. Shen Ying argued that the lower world might lack enough fortune to support both of their ascensions, potentially leaving Huang Qingyue stranded after Chen Xia departed 33 34.
Shen Ying explained that the Mystic Primordial Dao Chapters had been circulated to identify compatible prodigies. Huang Qingyue’s achievements in a world poor in Spiritual Qi marked her as a Quasi-Saint-level talent, suitable to become the mountain lord’s final disciple 34.
After Chen Xia tested Shen Ying’s strength and sought assurances about Huang Qingyue’s treatment, Shen Ying offered a Cross-Realm Beacon for communication. Huang Qingyue chose to leave once assured that she could still contact Chen Xia and see him after his ascension 35.
In their last reported conversation, she was safe, had become a heaven-tier disciple, possessed her own palace, and was preparing for her Nascent Soul Lightning Tribulation 36.
Appearance
- Youthful appearance: Still looks like a woman in her twenties after decades of cultivation; Chen Xia attributes her extended longevity to the Mystic Primordial Dao Chapters 27 28.
- Features: Fair skin, a graceful figure, and large, expressive eyes 22.
- Usual clothing: Frequently wears pale yellow dresses. In winter, she also wears padded clothing, including a blue-green cotton robe and a snow-white jacket over an embroidered pale yellow skirt 26 29 32.
Personality
Huang Qingyue is initially shy and easily embarrassed, speaking softly and avoiding Chen Xia’s gaze. Familiarity brings out her playful side: she bends chess rules as readily as he does, teases him, and enjoys simple activities such as kite flying and building snowmen 22 23 32.
Her devotion is practical as well as emotional. She guards Chen Xia during cultivation, prepares food to share when he emerges, and confronts a far stronger enemy to prevent his seclusion from being disturbed. Even after being wounded, her first concern is whether he has been hurt 29 30 31.
Despite her exceptional aptitude, she underestimates her progress. After condensing fifty wisps of Mystic Primordial Qi—more than Chen Xia had then accumulated—she worries that she is slow, weak, and useless. Over time, her everyday manner also becomes relaxed and unhurried, possibly through Chen Xia’s influence 27 28.
Abilities & Skills
Mystic Primordial Dao Chapters

- Raises her early combat strength to the level of supreme martial-world experts 27.
- Can form a simple Dao-script symbol to strengthen a sword attack 30.
- Enables full Dao-chapter inscription after she reaches Golden Core and accumulates roughly a thousand wisps of Qi 33.
Quasi-Saint-Level Aptitude
Shen Ying identifies Huang Qingyue as a prodigy particularly compatible with the Ninth Mountain’s cultivation method 34.
- Forms a Golden Core despite the lower world’s limited Spiritual Qi and opportunities 34.
- Qualifies for consideration as the mountain lord’s final disciple 34.
- Quasi-Saint describes her potential, not an attained cultivation realm 34.
Swordsmanship
Huang Qingyue begins studying the sword because she admires the sword-bearing heroes of the jianghu 29.
- Starts with ordinary martial-world sword arts and a plain, slender blade 29.
- Combines sword attacks with Mystic Primordial Qi and Dao script 30.
- Cannot overcome the Golden Core old immortal, who breaks her weapon and defeats her attack with his fingers 30.
Equipment / Items
- Mystic Primordial Dao Chapters — Cultivation text left to her by Chen Xia; originally a Ninth Mountain method circulated to locate compatible talents 23 34.
- Slender sword — An ordinary blade used for her initial training; broken and subsequently shattered during the confrontation with the old immortal 29 30.
- Cross-Realm Beacon — Communication link arranged by Shen Ying. The beacon in Chen Xia’s possession requires the fortune of heaven and earth to recharge; after thirty years of charging, it is only twenty percent full 35 36.
Relationships

- Huang Qingyue’s father — Sends her to attend to Chen Xia and previously teaches her Chinese chess 22.
- Song Wei — Bestows the title Moon Consort and treats her with exceptional respect because of her connection to Chen Xia and suspected cultivation inheritance 26.
