Background / History
Ji Pofu was an orphan who remained in an orphanage until eighteen, then became involved in the underworld. During his interrogation, he described enduring winter beneath bridges and fighting stray dogs for spoiled food 77.
At twenty-one, he saved an influential person and subsequently began doing business with him. Daoqing initially described this person as a wealthy businessman; he was later identified as retired general Lin Zhencheng. Saving Lin earned Ji Pofu considerable merit 77 86.
By the time of his arrest, Huo Sili knew of Ji Pofu as a rising businessman in S City with a reported underworld background. Despite Ji Pofu’s intense hostility toward him, Huo Sili stated that they had never met 76.
Appearance
Ji Pofu has a vicious-looking face and sword-like brows. His expression is initially indifferent when receiving reports about the Cheng family curse 61.
- Facial scar: Extends from his forehead to beneath his left eye 61.
- Spiritual signs: Merit and karmic sin coexist around him, visible to Qu Nanzhu 61 76.
Personality
Ji Pofu resents inherited wealth and favorable destiny, directing particular hatred toward Huo Sili because even Heaven appears to favor him. He frames his hostility as opposition to injustice rather than jealousy. Qu Nanzhu identifies his stated motive as hatred of the rich 61 76 77.
His cynicism extends to charitable work: he dismisses the Huo Foundation as a means of acquiring fame and status. The interrogation depicts him as twisting goodwill into self-interest while imagining himself uniquely clear-sighted 77.
He is also prideful and sensitive to humiliation. When police arrive instead of Huo Sili and Qu Nanzhu, he feels insulted at being treated as insignificant. Earlier, he shows no concern for the Daoist’s young disciple facing arrest after the Cheng family curse is broken 61 76.
Abilities & Skills
Physical Strength
Ji Pofu’s gang background included substantial physical strength 76.
- He recalls being able to kick a door like the nightclub basement’s out of shape with one blow.
- During his capture, he cannot force that door open while Qu Nanzhu’s paper figures hold the group inside 76.
Occult Scheming
Ji Pofu coordinates supernatural attacks through an evil Daoist rather than being shown personally casting them 61 76.
- Uses the Bai family as a front to draw out Huo Sili’s ghost protector, Ling Qiao.
- Relies on a formation to steal and redirect Huo Sili’s fortune.
- Accepts the Daoist’s mistaken assurance that Qu Nanzhu can no longer break the formation after his earlier exertions 61 76.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Buddhist beads — Handles them while discussing the failed Cheng family curse with the evil Daoist; no supernatural function is established 61.
Relationships
- Huo Sili — Target of his fortune-stealing scheme. Ji Pofu despises Huo’s wealth and heavenly favor despite having no prior personal acquaintance with him 61 76 77.
- Qu Nanzhu — Opponent who breaks the formation and sends paper figures to restrain him. Ji Pofu wrongly believes Qu must have paid a severe personal price to help Huo Sili 76.
- Unnamed evil Daoist — Occult collaborator who prepares and operates the formations. His confidence in the fortune-stealing formation proves misplaced 61 76.
- Bai family — Used as the visible front for Ji Pofu’s plans. Bai Miaochen subsequently lures Ling Qiao into a prepared formation, though she escapes 61 74.
- Lin Zhencheng — Retired general whose rescue earned Ji Pofu substantial merit. Lin later apologizes to Qu Nanzhu and Huo Sili for having given Ji Pofu the opportunity to take this path 77 86.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Plot Against the Huo Family
- After learning that a master accompanying Huo Sili has broken the Cheng family curse, Ji Pofu orders the Daoist to push the Bai family forward and prepare to act when Ling Qiao appears 61.
- Ling Qiao survives the attempted destruction of her ghost body. Qu Nanzhu later discovers that someone is stealing Huo Sili’s luck, explaining the accident involving Huo and Chen Xun 74.
Defeat and Arrest
- Qu Nanzhu breaks the fortune-stealing formation, causing backlash that leaves the Daoist unconscious. His paper figures trap Ji Pofu and the Daoist’s eight disciples in the nightclub basement 76.
- Huo Sili calls the police rather than confronting Ji Pofu at the scene. Once arrested, Ji Pofu refuses to speak until he meets Huo and whoever broke the formation 76.
- During their confrontation, Ji Pofu tries to unsettle Huo by emphasizing the supposed cost of Qu Nanzhu’s intervention. The pair’s relaxed, affectionate responses only intensify his anger 76.
Interrogation and Aftermath
- Ji Pofu eventually admits that resentment of Huo Sili’s wealth and good fortune motivated him. Huo concludes that further argument is pointless 77.
- Qu Nanzhu draws Daoqing’s attention to Ji Pofu’s merit, prompting scrutiny of his influential connections. Whether anyone had been supporting him behind the scenes is left to the Investigation Bureau 77.
- Lin Zhencheng later identifies himself as the person Ji Pofu saved and offers an apology gift. He explains that he had been recuperating abroad when Ji Pofu was arrested 86.
