Stranded in a ruined temple, Zhang Qingyuan met Zhang Junbao, a grieving former Shaolin lay disciple who had been expelled after defeating a monk in a tournament. Ch. 2And You Still Say You Don't Know Martial Arts

Zhang Qingyuan and Zhang Junbao settled in Sanhe Town, where Zhang Qingyuan planned for Zhang Junbao to improve his martial arts while he earned money. • A River Crocodile Gang adviser demanded that the Blood Lump Sect attack the brothers, so one of its members killed him.

After Zhang Qingyuan and Zhang Junbao killed Young Master Wang for murdering Xiaohua, they discussed why powerful people abused the poor and resolved to intervene when they witnessed injustice. Their newfound purpose strengthened their mindsets, while Wang Guangxi learned who had killed his son and ordered a citywide search for the two Taoists.

  • Wang Guangxi ordered his guards to search all of Luoyang and vowed to torture and kill the two Taoists.

Ch. 16Killing and looting gear

While traveling toward the Yellow River, Zhang Qingyuan and Zhang Junbao were ambushed by jianghu men hired to capture them for killing the Wang Family Bank’s eldest young master. They defeated the attackers and searched their corpses for money, leaving Zhang Junbao to reconsider his scruples about taking the dead men’s belongings.

  • Zhang Qingyuan and Zhang Junbao discussed their journey, the missing search for the Water-Parting Sword, and their disappointment at not encountering any duels.
  • Zheng Shan and seven or eight jianghu men surrounded them in a ruined temple and demanded they surrender for Master Wang’s reward.
  • Zhang Qingyuan and Zhang Junbao fought back, using their martial skills to kill the attackers, including Zheng Shan.
  • Zhang Qingyuan searched the corpses for money and persuaded Zhang Junbao to help, explaining that their lack of funds made the money useful.

Ch. 17We're Both Petty, So Why Pretend?

Zhang Qingyuan explained to Zhang Junbao why Zheng Shan and his men had so little money despite their martial skills, drawing on both jianghu realities and his own past. After Zhang Qingyuan found the sword’s maker and price marked on its scabbard, the two agreed they were not entirely free of ordinary desires and flaws.

  • Zhang Junbao wondered why Zheng Shan and his men had only three taels of silver between them, and Zhang Qingyuan explained that jianghu workers often spent their earnings on pleasure and freedom.
  • Zhang Qingyuan reflected on his own past struggles after graduation, when ambition gave way to exhausting work and spending money to enjoy life.
  • Zhang Qingyuan picked up Zheng Shan’s sword and discovered its scabbard was marked with the name Yinghui Sword-Forging Manor and a suggested price of five taels of silver.
  • Zhang Junbao praised them as refined men who resisted drink, lust, greed, and temper, but Zhang Qingyuan admitted he could not avoid all of those flaws.
  • Zhang Junbao agreed that neither of them wanted to remain a bachelor, and the two joked that they should not pretend to be better than they were.

Ch. 18Blue Butterfly Cloud-Gliding Wandering Body Steps

  • Zhang Junbao tested a movement technique inspired by butterflies, dodging the fighters and striking one who tried to rally them.
  • Zhang Qingyuan learned Zhang Junbao's movements, named the technique Blue Butterfly Cloud-Gliding Wandering Body Steps, and joined the fight.

Ch. 19We're Very Reasonable

Zhang Qingyuan and Zhang Junbao defeated a group of martial artists hired by the Wang family, then spared most of them and asked them to spread word of their actions. The two left the inn intending to make their names known in the martial world while limiting how many people they killed.

  • Zhang Qingyuan and Zhang Junbao used their new movement technique to defeat the armed men in the inn without killing most of them.
  • Zhang Qingyuan argued that both the brothers and the Wang family had acted reasonably, then asked the injured martial artists to spread a warning about challenging them.
  • Wang Hu rejected Zhang Qingyuan's offer and attacked, so Zhang Qingyuan killed him with a Nine Yang Palm strike.
  • The remaining martial artists agreed to spread word of the brothers' actions, and Zhang Qingyuan and Zhang Junbao went upstairs for their meal.
  • Zhang Qingyuan reflected that their new movement technique let them wound opponents without killing them and that they could now enter the martial world ahead of schedule.

Ch. 20The bewildering road to fame in the martial world

Zhang Qingyuan planned to draw more martial artists to Xia County so he and Zhang Junbao could make a name for themselves, unaware that rumors about their extraordinary rise had already spread. Shaolin’s confirmation that Zhang Junbao had once been a furnace-tending boy only deepened the martial world’s confusion about how the pair had become so powerful.

  • Zhang Qingyuan told Zhang Junbao that his Supreme Yang Meridian-Concentrating Divine Skill had reached the fifth level and his Supreme Yin Meridian-Concentrating Divine Skill the second, and said they still needed a bigger spectacle to build their fame.
  • Zhang Junbao reported that more than a dozen groups had asked about them and that Shaolin, Mount Hua, the Beggar Clan, Heaven Gate, and other sects had sent people to Xia County.
  • Zhang Junbao explained that the martial world had already spread their fame after their recent victories, and that investigators traced their origins to Sanhe Town and questioned Zhao Pengju.
  • Zhao Pengju told the investigators that the pair had known no martial arts half a year earlier and had developed their skills themselves, but the investigators disbelieved him and beat him.
  • Shaolin confirmed that Zhang Junbao had once tended its furnace, knew a few Shaolin techniques, and had been expelled, while the escaped witnesses insisted that the pair used Daoist arts.
  • The martial world rejected Zhao Pengju’s account and speculated that Zhang Qingyuan and Zhang Junbao had gained their power through a miraculous opportunity.

Ch. 21A way to break the deadlock!

Monk Yankong and Master Juekong realized Zhang Junbao was a prodigy and planned to claim his martial arts for Shaolin, while Zhang Qingyuan and Zhang Junbao prepared for the threat. Zhang Qingyuan decided they would wait and let the martial world grow more chaotic while he wrote a letter.

  • Monk Yankong and Master Juekong discussed Zhang Junbao’s martial arts and concluded he was an extraordinary genius, despite having no proof that he had learned Shaolin techniques.
  • Master Juekong blamed himself for driving Zhang Junbao out of Shaolin, and Monk Yankong proposed inviting him back and claiming his martial arts for Shaolin’s Scripture Pavilion.
  • Zhang Junbao told Zhang Qingyuan that Master Yankong, Master Juekong, Shaolin disciples, and the Wang Family’s fighters threatened them.
  • Zhang Qingyuan judged that they could handle the Wang Family’s fighters but could not defeat the Shaolin masters, so he chose to wait several days and write a letter before putting their plan into action.

Ch. 22Do I have a binding system?

Old Wang learned that Zhang Qingyuan was not affiliated with the Daoists and agreed to the public duel Zhang Qingyuan had arranged for the fifth day of the fifth month. As Zhang Qingyuan and Zhang Junbao trained for the confrontation, Zhang Qingyuan realized their martial insights seemed mysteriously linked.

  • Zhou Haojie told Old Wang that Zhang Qingyuan was a refugee fortune-teller, Zhang Junbao had refused Shaolin's offer to return, and the two had invited their enemies to settle matters in a duel.
  • Old Wang accepted Zhang Qingyuan's challenge on behalf of the Wang Family and vowed to avenge his son, knowing the feud would be settled under jianghu rules.
  • At the inn in Xia County, Zhang Qingyuan and Zhang Junbao continued training their True Qi, Nine Yang Palm, sword techniques, and movement techniques ahead of the duel.
  • Zhang Qingyuan noticed that whenever either he or Zhang Junbao gained an insight into a martial realm, the other seemed to gain the same insight moments later.

Ch. 23My turn to put on a show

Zhang Qingyuan and Zhang Junbao arrived at the clearing for their decisive battle against the Wang Family, where the martial world had gathered to watch. Old Wang began to accuse them, but Zhang Qingyuan cut him off, ready to take the stage.

  • The martial-world factions gathered outside the city, while Shaolin’s Yankong and other experts expressed confidence that the brothers would win.
  • Zhang Qingyuan and Zhang Junbao arrived at the clearing and surveyed the gathered sects, including Shaolin and the Joyous Union Sect.
  • Old Wang began accusing Zhang Junbao of killing his son and guards, but Zhang Qingyuan interrupted him with a cough.

Ch. 24Victory!

  • Zhang Junbao killed Zhou Haojie and Zhang Qingyuan killed the remaining guards, prompting the surviving hired fighters to surrender.

Ch. 25Junior brother, why have you betrayed Shaolin?

After defeating the Wang Family, Zhang Qingyuan and Zhang Junbao faced the Shaolin abbots as Zhang Junbao refused to return and argued that cultivating the Dao suited him better than Buddhism. The debate faltered when Juekong demanded an explanation for Zhang Junbao’s martial arts, and Yankong wondered why his junior brother had undermined Shaolin’s position.

  • Zhang Qingyuan and Zhang Junbao defeated the Wang Family’s forces, won the spectators’ admiration, and sent the surviving guards away.
  • The two approached Shaolin, where Yankong asked Zhang Junbao whether he still resented the temple and urged him to return.
  • Zhang Junbao said he had severed ties with Shaolin and preferred Daoist scriptures, then argued that Buddhism ultimately led to the Dao.
  • Juekong accused Zhang Junbao of secretly learning Shaolin martial arts, while Yankong regretted his junior brother’s interruption.
  • Zhang Junbao denied using Shaolin techniques since leaving the temple, and Juekong demanded to know where his internal strength and martial arts came from.
