Background
Geralt was born to a sorceress and underwent the Trial of the Grasses in childhood. His unusually high tolerance for its alchemical potions qualified him for additional trials with more powerful mutagens. He consequently has the highest degree of mutation among surviving witchers; his pigmentless white hair is a direct result 8 37.
Vesemir is his adoptive father and mentor. By the time Geralt meets Chen Xu, he is a celebrated veteran whose reputation extends to bards’ songs and a powerful Gwent hero card 3 27.
Appearance
- White hair: Lacks pigment because of his unusually extensive mutations 8.
- Catlike eyes: One of the features that immediately identifies him as a witcher 4.
- Youthful face: Appears to be a handsome man between thirty and forty despite being over ninety 3 34.
- Two swords: Usually carries a steel sword and a silver sword on his back 4 11.
- Wolf-head medallion: Wears the silver amulet of his witcher school against his chest 31 50.
- Potion effects: His eyes turn completely black after he drinks a potion before fighting the wyvern 38.
Personality
Geralt combines professional caution with a strong protective instinct. He refuses to draw his swords against drunken villagers, prevents an injured Chen Xu from entering the river, and initially warns that giving a witcher potion to an ordinary person could be fatal. When the Crones threaten to take Anna’s orphans, he openly refuses to surrender them 4 10 42.
He is proud of his swordsmanship and enjoys recognition of his skill. Fringilla’s teasing prompts him to test Chen Xu publicly, and his desire to win leads him to secretly use Axii despite their agreement to exclude Signs. He also plays Gwent competitively, attempting to win Gram before Chen Xu’s cheating leaves him borrowing money to settle the wager 30 35 36.
His devotion to Yennefer and Ciri repeatedly determines his priorities. He abandons an offered meal to pursue news of Yennefer and agrees to meet the emperor once he learns that Ciri is involved. Although often receptive to Chen Xu’s explanations, he eventually questions how a supposedly ordinary blacksmith has grown powerful enough to nearly defeat him 4 11 41.
Abilities & Skills
Recorded Attributes
Geralt’s initial character panel provides the following baseline 3.
| Category | Recorded Value |
|---|---|
| Tier | Qi Sense Lower Stage |
| Primary Class | Master Witcher Lv.1 |
| Secondary Classes | Witcher Apprentice Lv.5, maximum; Monster Hunter Lv.5, maximum |
| Constitution | 14 |
| Strength | 7 |
| Reflexes | 17 |
| Soul Quality | 3 |
| Spirit | 2 |
| Willpower | 5 |
| Dark Energy | 47 |
| Proficiencies | Unbroken Lineage; Swordsmanship Mastery; Beginner Dodge |
| Listed Skills | Whirl; Burst; Signs; Tracking Lv.2; Alchemy Lv.3, maximum; Riding Lv.2 |
Mutations and Source Bloodline
Geralt’s physique combines an inherited affinity for elemental energy with the effects of witcher mutation 3.
| Talent | Effects |
|---|---|
| Source Bloodline | Keen elemental perception and a robust physique; spirit +30%, constitution +10%, reflexes +10% 3. |
| Trial of the Grasses | Slowed aging; immunity to disease and ordinary toxins; enhanced physical abilities, senses, and recovery. Listed modifiers are constitution +2, strength +1, reflexes +2, and spirit −80% 3. |
- The Trial destroys reproductive activity and severely suppresses his spiritual potential 3.
- His immunity does not extend to every poison: the Endrega venom collected at Tree Heart’s cave is dangerous even to witchers 41.
- His exceptional reflexes allow him to counter a Wraith attacking from behind 31.
Swordsmanship
Geralt is described as the foremost swordsman in the North. During their duel, he controls Chen Xu’s rhythm through sustained pressure, exploiting openings with both sword attacks and unarmed blows 6 36.
- Whirl: Uses threads of magic to pull his body into rapid, stable rotation. It produces repeated full-force strikes, but requires a witcher’s physique to withstand the strain when the technique ends 36 37.
- Burst: Best initiated from a lunge. One magical pathway reinforces the spine, while another links the wrists and calves to store force like a drawn bow 37.
- New Year Greeting Swordsmanship: A magically amplified overhead cleave whose force exceeds his muscles’ natural output 36.
- Instruction: Teaches Chen Xu sword technique, Whirl, and Burst after their public duel 37.
Witcher Signs
| Sign | Documented Uses |
|---|---|
| Igni | Burns away drowners’ protective slime, chars a werewolf’s wounds to prevent regeneration, and projects flame against the wyvern 7 39 40. |
| Axii | Compels answers, influences minds, and creates combat openings. Geralt uses it on tavern patrons, the Baron, and Chen Xu 4 26 36 40. |
| Yrden | Traps Wraiths during the battle at Crow’s Perch cemetery 32. |
| Aard | Blasts Zhaotian Zhi back from the inner city wall 24. |
| Quen | Creates a golden protective barrier that blocks redirected fire and absorbs much of a wyvern’s impact 39. |
- Signs consume substantial amounts of the energy witchers call “magic” and allow little margin for error 37.
- Potions can strengthen their effects, as demonstrated by Geralt’s enhanced flames against the wyvern 39.
- His mental defenses are not absolute: the Fiend’s Sleeping Demon Eye leaves him dazed and vulnerable to Whispess’s vines 43.
Alchemy and Monster Knowledge
Geralt’s Alchemy is recorded at Lv.3, its maximum listed level 3.
- Potions: Produces Swallow for Lena, whose injuries begin healing after Tomira administers it 10 11.
- Blade oils: Prepares Specter Oil against Wraiths and draconid oil before approaching the harpy nest 31 38.
- Bombs: Destroys the harpy nest after recovering Johnny’s voice 39.
- Monster identification: Recognizes a cockatrice from the Baron’s description and warns his companions about the wyvern’s venomous tail 27 38.
- Curse knowledge: Identifies a life-draining curse mark and understands the danger posed by a developing Botchling 27 31.
- Teaching: Helps Chen Xu improve his Alchemy and explains where to extract mutagens from monster corpses 33 38.
Energy Control, Tracking, and Riding
- Energy control: Absorbs and purifies compatible ambient energy for Signs and combat techniques. He transfers five Gerkka of Source Power to Chen Xu in an attempt to help him perceive it 37.
- Enhanced perception: Detects a large presence beneath Whispering Hillock’s roots in addition to the werewolf Chen Xu notices nearby 40.
- Tracking: Listed at Lv.2 on his initial panel 3.
- Horsemanship: Riding Lv.2 contributes to his remarkable coordination with Roach, who can come when called from great distances 18.

Story Role / Major Arcs
White Orchard
Geralt and Vesemir save Chen Xu from two drowners near Woesong Bridge. Chen Xu immediately attempts to cultivate a connection with Geralt through his adopted daughter, jokingly addressing him as his future father-in-law 3.
While searching for Yennefer, Geralt receives a lead from Gaunter O’Dimm directing him to the Nilfgaardian garrison. The commander offers information in exchange for killing White Orchard’s griffin. Geralt prepares a buckthorn-baited trap with Vesemir and takes the wounded Chen Xu to Tomira 4 10.
He also prepares Swallow for the gravely injured Lena. After returning Chen Xu’s borrowed swords, he leaves with Yennefer to meet the emperor about Ciri, giving Chen Xu a runestone and leaving open the possibility of future instruction 11 29.
Crow’s Perch
Geralt returns alongside Fringilla, who has been assigned to oversee his search for Ciri. He vouches for Chen Xu’s identity and helps stop Zhaotian Zhi’s escape 24 25.
At Crow’s Perch, he questions the Baron with Axii and joins the effort to rescue Anna in exchange for information about Ciri. A Botchling incident then draws the party into a battle against Wraiths and Ghouls, during which Geralt protects Chen Xu from Fringilla’s large-scale lightning attack 26 27 31 32.
After recovering, he publicly duels Chen Xu. Though Geralt is acclaimed as the winner, his own steel sword is broken, and Chen Xu deliberately accepts the apparent defeat. Geralt subsequently provides the swordsmanship lessons Chen Xu had sought 36 37 39.
Crookback Bog and the Crones
Geralt follows the children’s advice to seek Johnny, helps recover the godling’s stolen voice, and learns that Ciri entered the orphan village wounded. Through Anna, he contacts the Crones and accepts their demand to destroy the power at Whispering Hillock 38 39.
At Tree Heart’s cave, he begins questioning Chen Xu’s extraordinary growth and influence over their decisions. Nevertheless, he accepts the plan to use Tree Heart as leverage, returning to demand that the Crones lift Anna’s curse before Chen Xu kills it 41.
When the Crones threaten the children, Geralt refuses to let them take anyone. During the ensuing battle, the Fiend dazes him and Whispess binds him in vines. Fringilla’s lightning frees him but also incapacitates him, leaving Chen Xu to defend both companions until reinforcements arrive 42 43.
Departure for Novigrad
Following the battle, the Baron reveals that Ciri went to Novigrad and offers travel money and passes. Geralt recovers at Crow’s Perch, attends the celebratory banquet, and then leaves with Fringilla to pursue the lead—unaware that Chen Xu has taken his witcher medallion 45 49 50.
