Background
Fringilla’s uncle, a master illusionist, cultivated her talent for illusion magic from childhood. She later became an imperial sorceress and a member of the Lodge of Sorceresses 24 42.
Emhyr imprisoned her for treason over her participation in the Lodge, then pardoned her to accompany Geralt in his search for Ciri. Her assignment was to monitor the witcher, report discoveries immediately, and transport Ciri to the emperor through a portal before anyone else could contact her. She received authority to mobilize troops, personnel, and resources for the search 24 25.
The emperor issuing these orders was an impostor occupying Emhyr’s body. Fringilla’s later reports continued to go to this false Emhyr 25 50.
Appearance
Fringilla is a beautiful, short-haired woman with emerald eyes and an aggressive gaze described as combining elegance with wildness 24.
- Clothing: A Nilfgaardian noble’s tunic, silk leggings, and fine riding boots 24.
- Bearing: Holds her chin high and expects deference from imperial officers 24.
- Attention to presentation: Dislikes the mud at Crow’s Perch and worries about dirtying her boots 24.
Personality
Fringilla is proud, imperious, and strongly identifies with Nilfgaard’s authority. She initially favors killing the Crones and taking Anna back by force, rejecting the idea that local “false gods” should dictate terms to the empire. Nevertheless, Chen Xu persuades her to attempt negotiation first 30 31.
Her confidence can exceed her practical judgment. Attacking the Botchling without adequate preparation triggers a monster swarm, and Chen Xu subsequently loses trust in her judgment. The encounter also tempers her attitude: afterward, she becomes more apprehensive about confronting the Crones 31 33 38.
She is not wholly insensitive to political limits. Despite insulting the Bloody Baron, she avoids threatening him in ways that would interfere with imperial strategy. She also privately disagrees with being sent to search for the emperor’s daughter during a war 26.
With Geralt, she is flirtatious, teasing, and fiercely protective. Her response to Chen Xu is more complicated: she admires his decisiveness, grows suspicious of his unusual capabilities, and ultimately omits him from a report to the emperor after he repeatedly protects her 24 35 42 50.

Illusion Magic
Illusion is Fringilla’s principal specialty, developed under her uncle’s instruction 40 42.
- Traps the transformed Zhaotian Zhi in layered illusions, leaving him conscious but unable to control his body. Her mastery is explicitly described as greater than Penny’s 24.
- Uses wind and water elements to envelop Orphans’ Village in a mirage, concealing Geralt and confusing the Crones and their summoned Fiend 42.
- Her village-wide illusion becomes unstable under the surviving Crones’ fury and eventually collapses, leaving her close to exhaustion 42 43.
Elemental Magic
Fringilla employs fire and lightning for direct attacks and battlefield control 31 32 42.
- Fire: Cripples the Botchling and prevents it from burrowing away, though her initial attack fails to kill it. She also helps clear the harpies obstructing the search for Johnny’s voice 31 32 38.
- Large-scale lightning: Kills the Botchling, devastates nearby Ghouls, and pulls concealed Wraiths out of the void. The spell requires an extended chant and protection from her companions 32.
- Chain lightning: Disperses Whispess’s crow form and forces her back into a physical body 42.
- Precision limits: Her cemetery lightning threatens Geralt and Chen Xu despite her efforts to spare them. A later bolt frees Geralt from binding vegetation but also shocks him severely 32 43.
- Energy cost: Casting at her limit depletes both dark energy and stamina; after the cemetery battle, she collapses and requires rest 32 33.
Portals
Fringilla can cast Atmospheric Portal, an advanced spell outside her main specialization 32 40.
- Her standing orders require her to return Ciri directly to the emperor by portal once found 25.
- One portal floods the Baron’s reception room with moat water 25.
- She cannot safely evacuate Anna and all the orphans together because of the power required 40.
- She warns that teleportation leaves traces that knowledgeable magic users can follow, making a portal escape insufficient protection from the Crones 40.
Magical Surveillance and Counter-Surveillance
- Recognizes the Crones’ extensive sensory network, anchored through trees bearing severed human ears 38.
- Raises a barrier to shield the party’s discussions from that network 38.
- Supplies Geralt with a magical listening brooch so she and Chen Xu can monitor his visit to Orphans’ Village 38.
- Notices Chen Xu using Detection on her 35.
- Reports her progress to the false Emhyr through a megascope 50.
Imperial Authority
- Can requisition troops, manpower, and resources for the search for Ciri 25.
- Commands Nilfgaardian soldiers to prevent the other Chosen from following the party out of Crow’s Perch 31.
- Carries official credentials identifying her as an imperial court sorceress 26.
Equipment & Items
- Imperial credentials: A dossier establishing her court position and authority 26.
- Magical listening brooch: Placed inside Geralt’s armor during his investigation of Orphans’ Village 38.
- Megascope: Used to report to the false Emhyr before leaving for Novigrad 50.
Relationships
- Geralt of Rivia — Traveling companion, lover, and the subject of her monitoring assignment. They protect one another in combat, and she accompanies him to Novigrad 25 32 35 42 50.
- Chen Xu / Pro — Ally in the search for Ciri and rescue of Anna. She respects his ruthlessness and abilities, while he distrusts her judgment after the Botchling disaster. She later conceals his existence from the false Emhyr 24 33 35 50.
- False Emhyr — The impostor behind her pardon and mission. She reports to him but withholds information about Chen Xu 25 50.
- Ciri — The target of her imperial assignment; she is ordered to retrieve Ciri immediately upon finding her 25.
- Philip Strenger, the Bloody Baron — A reluctant source of information about Ciri. Fringilla openly despises his drinking and abuse of Anna, but helps rescue his wife to secure his cooperation 26 30 45.
- Anna Strenger and the orphans — People she helps protect during the confrontation with the Crones. She remains at Orphans’ Village while Geralt and Chen Xu investigate Whispering Hillock 40 41.
- Unnamed uncle — A master illusionist who trained her from childhood 42.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Arrival at Crow’s Perch
Fringilla arrives with Geralt during the confrontation involving Zhaotian Zhi. She dismisses the weapons-related trouble surrounding Chen Xu, then intervenes when Zhaotian Zhi’s second-stage mutation overwhelms the soldiers. Her illusion immobilizes him long enough for Chen Xu to kill him with a poleaxe 24.
She subsequently presents her imperial credentials to the Bloody Baron as the party questions him about Ciri. Chen Xu’s information about Anna turns the investigation into an agreement to rescue the Baron’s wife 26 27.
The Botchling Disaster
Although Fringilla accepts a negotiation-first approach to the Crones, she attacks the Botchling discovered in the cemetery at Crow’s Perch. Its cries summon Wraiths and corpse monsters, forcing Geralt and Chen Xu into a prolonged defense 31.
She eventually destroys the Botchling and most of the swarm with a powerful lightning spell. Both she and Geralt are left depleted, delaying the expedition and damaging Chen Xu’s confidence in her 32 33.
Orphans’ Village and the Crones
At Crookback Bog, Fringilla supports Geralt’s investigation through a listening brooch and helps fight the harpies blocking access to Johnny’s stolen voice. When the Crones demand the destruction of the dark power at Whispering Hillock, she remains behind to watch Anna and the children 38 40.
She prevents the Crones from immediately killing Anna over the children’s illness by reminding them that her companions are fulfilling their agreement. After Tree Heart’s death, the Crones betray that agreement, and Fringilla counters with lightning and a village-wide illusion 41 42.
The illusion enables Chen Xu to approach and kill Weavess, but the surviving sisters’ reaction breaks it. Fringilla expends her remaining magic freeing Geralt from a plant cage, leaving Chen Xu to defend both of them until the Baron’s men and Nilfgaardian soldiers arrive 42 43.
Departure for Novigrad
After the confrontation with the Crones and the Wild Hunt, Fringilla demands the promised information from the Baron. He reveals that Ciri has gone to Novigrad and warns her about the city’s witch hunters 45.
Before departing with Geralt, she reports Zhaotian Zhi’s abnormalities to the false Emhyr but leaves Chen Xu out of her account. The narration frames this omission as an unwitting repayment for his repeated protection; his decision not to accompany Geralt also dispels her remaining suspicion 50.
