Personality
Istredd is direct in negotiation and generous toward people whose abilities he values. He rewards Lynn and Geralt beyond their original contract, remains courteous when Geralt interrupts his recruitment proposal, and accepts their stated neutrality without openly pressuring them further 26 31 57. He also respects dwarven promises, contrasting their reliability with human duplicity 32.
His tolerance extends to witchers and nonhumans. When Lynn joins his army, Istredd offers him a concealed identity out of concern for the prejudice he might face—not because he objects to serving alongside a witcher 400. Later, he refuses to turn against Lynn despite Philippa Eilhart’s warnings and his own nobles’ fears that Lynn’s growing power could cause another secession 411 432.
This generosity does not make him merciful toward defeated enemies. After reclaiming his kingdom, he exterminates the families of Lettenhove and Idi and executes or exiles their trusted followers. He nevertheless attempts to judge other nobles fairly, distinguishing apparent surrender from genuine disloyalty 410.
History
Dispossession and Exile
Istredd’s grandfather and father, Baldwin Thyssen, both ruled Kovir and Poviss. During Baldwin’s reign, Lettenhove engineered the Poviss Secession, while a rebellion in Kovir brought King Idi to power. Idi subsequently ruled as Lettenhove’s puppet 26 50 52.
The Thyssen family fled abroad, and Baldwin died of a sudden grave illness during their escape. Lady Benigna sheltered the survivors in the Principality of Talgar, where collateral branches of the Thyssen family also supported Istredd. He spent his exile gathering strength, supporters, and allies for a restoration 26 57.
Caravan Journey and Meeting the Witchers
In Aedd Gynvael, Istredd introduced himself to Lynn as a merchant from Kovir and offered him an escort contract worth two hundred Novigrad crowns, with all expenses covered. Lynn accepted and secured Geralt’s participation, privately recognizing Istredd as the displaced royal heir 26.
The caravan carried everyday necessities to Mahakam, where Istredd intended to purchase dwarven weapons. Its escort included thirty human guards and a well-equipped dwarven squad. When he noticed Lynn and Geralt sharing a horse, Istredd gave Lynn an ink-black Kovir steed 27 32.
After the witchers helped repel an elven attack, Istredd promised additional payment. He also requested secrecy concerning Francesca’s connection to the rebels, preferring to forgo Aedirn’s bounty rather than attract the hostility of an influential sorceress 31 32.
A badge from Great Elder Brovar Hogger secured the caravan’s passage into Mahakam. Istredd supplemented this permission with gifts of spirits at the checkpoints and accommodated the witchers’ separate commission from the great elder 32 33 40. The caravan later traveled through Dorian and down the Pontar to Novigrad, where he sold half his Mahakam weapons for a considerable profit 48 49.
Lettenhove’s Assassination Attempt
While returning through Talgar, Istredd stayed at an inn infiltrated by Lettenhove’s agents. He placed pillows in his bed and hid in a cupboard with a dagger, but the armored knight sent to kill him overpowered and began strangling him. Lynn intervened, killed the knight, and defended Istredd against the remaining upstairs assassins 50 51.
Istredd initially wanted to flee, but accepted Lynn’s warning that attackers were waiting outside. He ordered the caravan to hold the inn until dawn. The survivors then discovered that the stable guards had been drugged and murdered, the horses slaughtered, and the inn’s original staff killed 51 52.
Lynn and Geralt tracked the attackers to their camp. Information obtained from the mercenaries confirmed Lettenhove’s involvement and exposed another planned ambush, allowing Istredd’s party to avoid it 53 56.
Recruiting Lynn
On the road back to the inn, Istredd asked whether a witcher would accept becoming a king’s vassal. After reaching Talgar City, he formally revealed his identity and explained his family’s downfall 56 57.
Geralt refused political involvement on grounds of witcher neutrality. Istredd did not insist, but presented each witcher with five hundred crowns instead of the agreed two hundred. He also offered the Eye of Nehaleni and a Thyssen signet ring, which Lynn accepted 57 58.
Istredd subsequently promised Lynn a title and land in Kovir in exchange for his support. That promise became central to Lynn’s plans for a territory where witchers could sustain themselves without depending entirely on monster contracts 58 259 268.
Defense of Talgar
When Lynn rejoined him years later, Istredd offered immediate knighthood. Lynn declined, preferring to earn military merit before accepting a title 400.
The Hengfors League’s invasion of Talgar interrupted the restoration campaign. After Shabard fell and Panhu City came under siege, Istredd resolved to help Lady Benigna expel the invaders before reclaiming his homeland 401.
He approved Lynn’s plan to send the witchers around the enemy army and strike the siege force at Panhu City. During the subsequent battle, enemy sorcery shattered the Restoration Army’s right flank. Rather than retreat, Istredd personally led his armored guards into the breach, inspiring some fleeing levies to return. The Earl of Panhu City’s rear attack then created the opening Lynn’s force needed 403 407.
After victory, Istredd rewarded the witchers and advanced to recover Talgar’s lost territory. He stopped at the border rather than extending the campaign into the Hengfors League 409.
Restoration of Thyssen Rule
After the defeat of Lettenhove and Idi’s forces, Kovir’s population welcomed Istredd’s returning army. Idi was killed by peasants while fleeing, while Lettenhove retreated to Lan Exeter 410.
The city fell after a week-long siege when witchers from the Schools of the Viper and Cat infiltrated it and opened the gates. Lynn and the witchers intercepted Lettenhove as he attempted to escape in women’s clothing 410.
Istredd eliminated the usurpers’ bloodlines, punished their supporters, and distributed substantial rewards throughout the Restoration Army. His settlement included both nobles and ordinary soldiers who had distinguished themselves 410.
Granting the Witchers a Dominion
Istredd had promised Lynn his choice of a city in Kovir and Poviss, excluding the summer and winter capitals. Lynn instead selected Isparaden, the Autonomous Dominion of Eszpádén, for its size, agricultural potential, proximity to Kaer Morhen, and position beside Kaedwen 411.
Although surprised by the choice, Istredd granted the territory and raised Lynn from earl to grand duke to strengthen his authority over its local nobles. He then disbanded the restoration forces, paying his peasant levies and allowing them to return to their fields 411.
His support continued beyond the grant: he lent Lynn troops and grain and declined to curb him as his power expanded into Hengfors. Even when Lynn became independent in all but name, Istredd took no action against him 432.
Final Illness and Succession
After learning that Istredd was gravely ill, Lynn traveled to Kovir and met him in the royal sickroom. Istredd requested a private conversation and asked Lynn to support Tankred as he had supported him 432.
He also promised that Tankred would formally recognize the Augustus family’s independence. As a contingency, he authorized Lynn to annex Kovir if Tankred died and Istredd’s grandson proved incapable of governing, asking only that the Thyssen family retain a piece of land 432.
Istredd died peacefully a few days later. Lynn attended his funeral, which drew countless mourners. Tankred inherited the throne, recognized the Augustus family’s independence, and concluded treaties with Lynn 432.
