Background / History
Education and Royal Service
Triss graduated from Aretuza as a star pupil, having studied under Tissaia alongside Margarita Laux-Antille and Keira Metz. She credits Tissaia’s demanding instruction with giving them knowledge beyond that of ordinary sorceresses 75 94 106.
At her introduction, she is Temeria’s newly appointed royal adviser and a favorite of King Foltest. Her position makes her an important contact for merchants seeking access to Temerian markets, although her duties chiefly involve magical assistance rather than unrestricted participation in military and state affairs 75 76.
Brokilon Investigation
Triss privately accepts a commission from Kerack’s royal family and merchants to investigate disappearances in northern Brokilon. They hope to establish a profitable trade route, but neither caravans nor the soldiers sent after them have returned. Unable to obtain Temerian troops for a private contract, she hires Lynn for four hundred crowns, half payable in advance 77 78.
During the expedition, both Triss and Lynn lose their memories of their traveling companions. Lynn exposes the concealed campsite with the Eye of Nehaleni, and they follow the captives’ trail. Drawing on Aretuza’s records, Triss recognizes the creature responsible as a species native to their world 86 87.
She fights the Mother Tree of Flesh with powerful fire magic while Lynn protects her casting. After the disappearances are resolved, she opens a portal to evacuate the survivors 88 90.
Partnership with Lynn
Following the expedition, Triss and Lynn become lovers, and he moves into her Novigrad house. She gives him a long-distance voice box and urges him not to throw his life away 91 92.
Triss subsequently seeks a villa-sized Permanent Extension Charm from Tissaia. She later presents Lynn with a dragonhide runic pouch bearing that enchantment 94 106.
When Lynn requests help with an elven vault, Triss identifies and safely dismantles a spell designed to burn its contents if attacked. The treasure inside is valued at nearly forty thousand crowns. She later protects Lynn and Professor Gloger from an arrow volley during Prince Adrian’s attempt to kill them, then helps Lynn prepare to move against the prince 106 109 110 112.
Research and Political Assistance
Triss translates an Elder Speech notebook for Lynn, revealing a Phoenix Guard archery manual. She also commissions a Fadlan-wood longbow from a master bowyer in Kovir for him 135 136.
At Lynn’s request, she researches whether matching a child’s constitution to a witcher school can improve survival during that school’s Trial of the Grasses. Working with Margarita, she finds an old mutation researcher’s notebook recording an increase of ten to twenty percent 249 260.
Despite pressure at Foltest’s court, Triss does not recruit Lynn into the Temerian–Redanian border dispute. Lynn understands this as an effort to protect him from political retaliation and avoid implicating other witchers 281.
Later, she travels to Little Skellige to meet Lynn and receives custody of Charimir, whose testimony exposes Duchess Helena’s secret assistance to Nilfgaard. Triss recognizes the information’s diplomatic value and delivers him to Foltest, leading to a secret meeting between the Temerian and Redanian kings 328 329.
Dagon and Hereward’s Betrayal
When Foltest acquires the Mark of the Deep Sea, Triss and Keira attempt to purify Dagon’s influence. Their first ritual only slightly weakens the mark. Triss recommends moving the king inland to Maribor rather than endangering Aretuza’s students by seeking sanctuary there 370 371.
Foltest’s condition worsens in Maribor, prompting Triss to bring Lynn to investigate. Lynn exposes her uncle Hereward as a servant of the evil god. Ashamed that her recommendation placed Foltest in greater danger, Triss attacks Hereward with a magma serpent, then attempts to reach him through charm magic. His brief clarity gives way to renewed fanaticism 377 379 380.
Triss also secures Margarita’s assistance for the expedition against Dagon at Lake Vizima 382 385.
Lord of Velen
Lynn asks Foltest to grant his proposed fief to Triss instead: a sorceress becoming a territorial lord would attract less attention than a witcher doing so. Although Triss initially doubts her ability to govern Velen, she accepts the appointment 381 382.
She arrives at Crow’s Perch with royal knights who will serve as her vassals. Foltest’s charter orders Baron Velerad to relinquish the territory and move his family to a smaller fief outside Vizima 389 390.
When Velen’s officials advise her to ignore most villages because of the Ladies of the Wood, Triss dismisses them and begins inspecting the province with Lynn. With his guidance, she becomes capable of handling the territory’s administrative affairs independently 390 395.
Hengfors and the Final Expedition
Triss later enters Lynn’s service in the Duchy of Hengfors alongside Keira, and each receives a fief. During the final confrontation with the Wild Hunt, she provides wide-area fire bombardment before allied troops close into melee 417 433.
After Lynn’s empire stabilizes, he marries Triss, Keira, and Fringilla. The household, including Cirilla, lives harmoniously for decades 433.
When the Lady of the Lake asks Lynn to investigate a rift on Black Tern Island, Triss insists on accompanying him. They emerge in a dungeon in the world of Baldur’s Gate, free Halsin, and help defeat the goblins occupying an abandoned temple before setting out toward the Emerald Grove 433.
Appearance
- Hair: Red, described as resembling blazing fire 328.
- Complexion and build: Fair-skinned, petite, and curvaceous 91 249 328.
- Clothing: Wears fitted outfits and tall boots. Lynn later gives her a Toussaint hunting ensemble consisting of a short black cloak, fitted red top, decorated belt, black riding breeches, and boots 76 249.
Personality
Triss is warm, flirtatious, and considerate toward Lynn from their first meeting. She takes care not to offend him when asking about his youth and experience, and willingly explains magical theory when she realizes his interest is sincere 76 78.
She remains composed under pressure. Her reassuring smile steadies Ser Royce during the Brokilon expedition, and her later conduct in Velen shows a willingness to confront neglected responsibilities rather than accept her officials’ excuses 82 390.
Her affection does not eliminate her professional commitments. She cannot abandon her royal duties for months to assist Lynn’s research, yet she helps through Aretuza’s library and her scholarly contacts. She expects regular communication from him and openly reproaches him after months without contact 249 260.
Triss can also be firm and possessive. She objects when Keira teases Lynn in front of her, dismisses Velen’s complacent officials outright, and refuses to let Lynn undertake the final journey through the rift alone 282 390 433.
Abilities & Skills
Fire Magic
Fire is Triss’s clearest combat specialty, ranging from handheld fireballs to large-scale bombardment 76 87 433.
- Conjures a giant crimson bird whose flames melt through the Mother Tree of Flesh’s root barrier 88.
- Forms magma into a roaring serpent to attack Hereward 379.
- Bombards the Wild Hunt over a wide area, stopping when allied fighters engage at close range 433.
Teleportation
Triss opens portals for travel, supplies, and evacuations 78 85 90.
- Can connect to Vizima, Novigrad, and other major northern cities 85.
- Requires spellcasting materials, not magical power alone, for the group evacuation after the Brokilon mission 90.
- Travels to Skellige by ship because she has never been there before 328.
- Respects Aretuza’s portal restrictions, arriving outside Gors Velen and riding to Thanedd rather than entering through an unauthorized portal 94.
Protective Magic and Purification
Triss uses magical barriers and participates in rituals against supernatural corruption.
- Shields Lynn and Professor Gloger from an entire volley of arrows 109.
- Deploys a purple barrier from a scroll to protect herself while preparing a spell 88.
- Works with Keira to weaken Foltest’s Mark of the Deep Sea; the initial purification does not remove it 370 371.
Detection and Dispelling
Triss can examine enchantments, identify magical hazards, and dismantle complex spells.
- Detects the elven vault’s destructive mechanism and dispels its enchantment in approximately twenty minutes without triggering it 106.
- Checks the vault’s gold to confirm that it is real rather than illusory 106.
- Recognizes the Eye of Nehaleni, but is herself susceptible to the Brokilon creature’s memory manipulation 86.
Charm and Utility Magic
- Charm magic: Briefly restores some clarity to Hereward through an enchanted voice, but cannot overcome his renewed fanaticism 380.

- Cleaning and illumination: Cleans Lynn with a spell and creates a floating light to illuminate the vault 106 115.

- Mutation research: Locates historical evidence linking constitutional compatibility to improved Trial of the Grasses survival 260.
- Governance: Learns to administer Velen independently with Lynn’s guidance 395.
Limitations
- Magical-potion allergy: Cannot replenish her magic with potions containing magic; instead, she can draw magical power from fire 84.
- Casting preparation: Some powerful spells require time and protection. Against the Mother Tree of Flesh, she asks Lynn to buy her several minutes 88.
- Intelligence work: Excels at fire magic but is not skilled at establishing spy networks 76.
