Background / History

Laboratory Work with Rinto

Kabuto had assisted Orochimaru’s experiments for several years before meeting Rinto. When Orochimaru accepted Rinto as a collaborator, he ordered Kabuto to prepare a separate west-side laboratory, arrange unrestricted materials access, and obtain an access token for him. Kabuto was visibly surprised by the privileges granted to the newcomer but carried out the orders 3 6.

Initially responsible for delivering food and chakra samples, Kabuto became directly involved when Rinto requested detailed measurements of Scorch Release chakra. His analysis established an exact 7:3 fire-to-wind particle ratio, resolving a bottleneck in Rinto’s attempts to reproduce the technique. Kabuto recognized that reproducing Kekkei Genkai through engraved configurations could overturn the bloodline-based distribution of power, and reported the development to Orochimaru 4 6.

Their cooperation developed into an explicitly mutual-use arrangement: Kabuto handled basic measurements, experimental records, and materials requisitions, while gaining close access to Rinto’s research and reporting his progress to Orochimaru. He also conducted experiments of his own, seeking Rinto’s corrections to chakra-filtration and Cursed Seal drawings 6 17 18 19.

Konoha’s Intervention and Continued Contact

As Konoha’s interest in Rinto intensified, Kabuto relayed inquiries from researchers, Anbu, and the Hokage’s office. Following Orochimaru’s instructions, he described Rinto’s work as classified auxiliary research on military ninja tools and turned away requests for access. When Anbu eventually forced their way toward the laboratory, Kabuto warned Rinto and was knocked down outside the door 10 13 20.

After Rinto fled Konoha, Kabuto found him in the Land of Rivers carrying supplies from Orochimaru. These included high-grade starfall iron, conductive crystal jade, engraving consumables, and notebooks recovered from the burned laboratory. He warned Rinto that several villages were pursuing him and obtained further corrections to a Cursed Seal configuration. Rinto understood the deliveries as an attempt to draw him back into Orochimaru’s service 23.

Pursuit in the Land of Whirlpools

Kabuto reported Rinto’s eastward movements to Orochimaru and was ordered to prepare a ship. In the Land of Whirlpools, he led more than a dozen Sound Ninja through the ruins, dismantling seals faster than the other pursuing teams. His group’s clash with Root near the palace ruins triggered buried sealing arrays and a chain reaction across the island. He withdrew after Rinto intervened and demonstrated barehanded Dust Release 29 30 31.

Kabuto later accompanied Orochimaru’s prepared attempt to recruit or capture Rinto. During the ensuing battle, he used sealing tags to establish a chakra-locking formation under cover of Orochimaru’s snakes. Rinto destroyed its core anchor with Lightning Release, and the backlash injured Kabuto. When senjutsu-enhanced Dust Release dissolved half of Orochimaru’s body, Kabuto attempted medical treatment but could not stop the lingering erosion. He retreated with Orochimaru and the surviving Sound Ninja 32 33.

Falling Sand Auction

At the underground auction near Falling Sand Town, Kabuto posed as an inconspicuous merchant. Orochimaru had instructed him to obtain whatever interested Rinto if possible, or otherwise determine his limits. Kabuto competed for the fragmentary Six Paths Yin-Yang Release scroll but lost when Rinto offered twenty-seven top-tier ninja tools 48.

After the auction, Kabuto pursued Rinto and observed his battle with Root from concealment. He then tried to undermine Rinto’s confidence in Jiraiya by suggesting that Konoha’s distrust of rogue ninja would eventually outweigh any assistance. Facing both men, Kabuto abandoned his attempt to seize the research and escaped using smoke bombs and a teleportation seal 48 49.

Appearance

Kabuto is introduced as a bespectacled boy and commonly wears a gentle, seemingly harmless smile 3 6 48.

Kabuto maintains a courteous, accommodating manner, speaking softly and avoiding unnecessary disturbance when entering Rinto’s laboratory. He repeatedly brings food, drinking water, gauze, and disinfectant, and urges Rinto to eat or tend his injuries. He is especially cautious around Rinto’s temper and research papers, immediately backing off when told not to touch discarded drafts 4 5 10 15.

His helpfulness coexists with scientific curiosity and loyalty to Orochimaru. He welcomes laboratory work because it lets him study Rinto’s methods while keeping his master informed. Outside the laboratory, his harmless demeanor conceals calculated surveillance and attempts to acquire research; he remains smiling even when rebuffed and retreats once confrontation offers no useful opening 6 48 49.
