Background / History
Madara and Hashirama once shared a dream of protecting Konoha and the shinobi world. Hashirama defeated him at the Valley of the End, but Madara faked his death and continued pursuing power. He later declared that he had abandoned their shared dream at that battle, replacing it with the belief that only Infinite Tsukuyomi could bring lasting peace 164 165.
Over the following decades, Madara transplanted Hashirama’s cells, awakened the Rinnegan, and arranged his eventual return. After rescuing Obito at Kannabi Bridge, he cultivated him as an agent of his plan and prepared safeguards against rebellion. Madara believed Black Zetsu was an extension of his own will and entrusted it with ensuring that Obito would ultimately resurrect him 163 165 168.
Appearance
- Susanoo: Manifests as pale-violet skeletal armor and can expand into a complete, enormous humanoid combat form 152 159.
- Six Paths form: Wears white Six Paths robes, possesses two Rinnegan, and is accompanied by nine floating black Truth-Seeking Orbs and a staff 165.
- After absorbing the God Tree: A vertical, scarlet Rinne Sharingan containing nine tomoe opens in the center of his forehead 168.
Personality
Madara is composed, domineering, and confident in his superiority. He treats most opponents as insignificant and regards Obito as an expendable pawn rather than an equal. Even Obito’s rebellion initially fails to disturb him because he trusts his preparations and contingencies 158 159 163.
His rivalry with Hashirama draws out a much more openly enthusiastic side. Hashirama’s arrival ignites his fighting spirit, and he repeatedly insists on keeping their duel separate from the surrounding battle. He also recognizes exceptional strength: after surviving Night Guy, he acknowledges Might Guy as the strongest 158 159 162 167.
Madara sincerely presents Infinite Tsukuyomi as salvation. He believes an eternal dream can eliminate war, death, loss, and regret, dismissing Hashirama’s objections even as the God Tree turns shinobi into captives and nourishment. His certainty collapses only when Black Zetsu reveals that he, too, has been manipulated 166 168.
Abilities & Skills
Sharingan and Yin Release
Rinto identifies Madara’s Sharingan as a bloodline-based system for amplifying and applying Yin Release chakra 152.
- The Sharingan’s functions include copying ninjutsu, reading movement, and interfering with minds through genjutsu 152.
- Madara possesses the Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan and exceptional mental energy, supporting his advanced ocular techniques 151 152.
- Rinto proposes that sealing off the circulation of one’s mental energy can resist Sharingan genjutsu 152.
Susanoo
Madara’s Susanoo combines a Yin Release framework, which determines its form and movement, with a Yang Release structure that gives it physical substance 152.
- Forms: Progresses from a skeleton to a fleshed-out armored body and finally a Perfect Susanoo capable of generating wings and weapons 152.
- Destructive power: A single swing of his Perfect Susanoo can cleave a mountain range 152.
- Sustaining factors: Its strength depends on Yin–Yang control, mental energy, and chakra reserves. Hashirama’s cells supply Madara with the abundant Yang Release energy needed to sustain it 152.
- Weakness: Disrupting its underlying Yin Release framework can collapse the entire construct. Rinto identifies targeted mental interference and Yin-countering ninjutsu as possible approaches 152.
Hashirama Cells and Elemental Ninjutsu
Madara’s cells contain a stable fusion of Uchiha and Hashirama bloodlines without transplant rejection 152.
- Wood Release: The transplant grants him mastery of Wood Release; after his living resurrection, its use is described as not inferior to Hashirama’s 152 164.
- Life energy: Hashirama’s cells provide immense Yang Release reserves and support the fusion underlying his Six Paths power 152.
- Fire Release: Majestic Destroyer Flame: Engulfs the battlefield and evaporates a Water Formation Wall jointly cast by allied shinobi. He also uses it to burn through Hashirama’s trees and paralyzing pollen 152 164.
Independent Impure World Reincarnation
Madara reverse-engineers and rewrites his reincarnation rather than merely resisting its commands 156.
- Anchors his soul to his cells and makes chakra supply and regeneration self-sustaining 156.
- Retains unlimited chakra and instant recovery from bodily destruction after escaping the caster’s control 156.
- Rinto’s proposed counters include severing the soul–body bond, disrupting energy absorption, attacking the soul directly, or sealing him in an isolated space 156.
- Despite its endurance, the reanimated body restricts his full chakra and ocular power; genuine resurrection makes him substantially stronger 163 164.
Rinnegan and Limbo: Border Jail
Limbo projects Madara’s shadows into a dimension overlapping the physical world, allowing them to attack opponents who cannot ordinarily perceive them 164.
- Defeats and immobilizes Hashirama and Tobirama, then shatters Naruto’s Nine-Tails Mode armor with an unseen strike 164.
- After becoming the Ten-Tails Jinchūriki, Madara controls four shadows simultaneously 165.
- The shadows share synchronized perceptions and movements with his original body, allowing coordinated defense and attacks without visibly diverting his attention 166.
- Rinto identifies Six Paths-level perception or the Rinnegan as means of perceiving Limbo. Hashirama’s senjutsu chakra subsequently enables Naruto to sense the shadows 164 165.
- Naruto and Sasuke use senjutsu to detect and contest the shadows, but this does not overcome Madara’s superior speed and coordinated attacks 166.
Six Paths Power and Truth-Seeking Orbs
Madara combines the Uchiha bloodline, Hashirama’s cells, Rinnegan ocular power, and the Ten-Tails’ chakra in a controlled fusion, avoiding the instability that marked Obito’s transformation 165.
- Truth-Seeking Orbs: Fuse Yin–Yang Release with all five elemental attributes. They change shape into blades, nets, barriers, and other weapons while dismantling most ninjutsu 165 166 167.
- Spatial interference: One orb pierces Kakashi’s Kamui vortex rather than being transported away 165.
- Regeneration: Recovers after Night Guy destroys half of his body 167.
- Limits: Pure taijutsu can pressure his defenses. Guy’s Daytime Tiger diverts an orb, Evening Elephant cracks his barrier, and Night Guy gravely wounds him 165 167.
- Senjutsu resistance: Senjutsu provides a means of contesting Six Paths abilities, but Naruto and Sasuke’s coordinated senjutsu-enhanced assault still fails against him 165 166.
God Tree and Infinite Tsukuyomi
Madara feeds Ten-Tails chakra into the earth to grow the God Tree, then absorbs it to awaken the Rinne Sharingan 166 168.
- Projects the Rinne Sharingan’s ocular power onto the moon, extending Infinite Tsukuyomi across the world 168.
- Traps most Allied shinobi in the genjutsu and the God Tree’s cocoons 168.
- Sasuke’s Perfect Susanoo protects Naruto, Kakashi, and Guy, while Rinto conceals himself from the technique 168.
- The captives become sources of energy for the God Tree, despite Madara describing their fate as eternal peace 166 168.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Black Receivers — Condensed chakra weapons used to block attacks, restrain bodies, suppress chakra pathways, and control Obito through receivers previously embedded in him 159 163 165 166.
- Six Paths Staff — A staff formed from Truth-Seeking Orb energy and wielded in his Ten-Tails Jinchūriki form 165.
- Left Rinnegan — His recovered eye, delivered by White Zetsu and implanted on the battlefield 164.
Relationships
- Hashirama Senju — Former partner in a shared dream and lifelong rival. Madara eagerly seeks their rematch while rejecting Hashirama’s ideals; Hashirama’s transplanted cells also underpin his later power 152 158 164.
- Obito Uchiha — Rescued subordinate and intended instrument of resurrection. Madara uses embedded receivers and Black Zetsu to counter his rebellion, openly calling him a pawn 159 163.
- Black Zetsu — Trusted as Madara’s own will and final safeguard. In reality, it manipulates him, betrays him, and converts his body into Kaguya’s resurrection vessel 163 168.
- White Zetsu — Subordinate who returns Madara’s left Rinnegan 164.
- Rinto — Researcher who studies Madara’s tissue, chakra, transformations, and techniques. Madara notices him and admits that even his Rinnegan cannot gauge his depth 152 157 165 168.
- Naruto Uzumaki and Sasuke Uchiha — Battlefield opponents whom Madara overwhelms and pins with technique-sealing receivers 166.
- Might Guy — Opponent whose life-burning taijutsu gravely injures Madara and earns his recognition 167.
- Kaguya Ōtsutsuki — The true beneficiary of Black Zetsu’s scheme; resurrected through the destruction and transformation of Madara’s body 168 169.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Return to the Fourth Shinobi World War
Madara’s reincarnation breaks the Allied Shinobi Forces’ defensive lines. Retrieving even tiny fragments of his body and Susanoo costs Konoha’s elite troops dozens of casualties. Those samples allow Rinto to analyze his bloodline fusion and send possible counters to the front 151 152.
When Kabuto is forced to release Impure World Reincarnation, Madara preserves his existence by rewriting the technique. He also defeats the combined Five Kage, leaving all five critically wounded. Rinto studies further samples and prepares another countermeasure handbook as Madara joins Obito to revive the Ten-Tails 155 156.
Obito’s Rebellion and Madara’s Resurrection
Madara resumes his duel with Hashirama when the four Hokage arrive. His attempt to force Obito to perform Rinne Rebirth fails when Obito instead becomes the Ten-Tails Jinchūriki. After Naruto persuades Obito to abandon his plan, Black Zetsu hijacks Obito’s attempted resurrection of the war dead and redirects it toward Madara 158 159 162 163.
Restored to life, Madara destroys Hashirama’s Gate of the Great God and repels Tobirama and Minato’s coordinated attack. Recovering his left Rinnegan then allows him to subdue Hashirama and Tobirama before sealing the Ten-Tails into himself 163 164 165.
Infinite Tsukuyomi and Betrayal
After defeating Naruto and Sasuke, Madara begins growing the God Tree. Guy’s Eighth Gate assault nearly destroys him, but regeneration preserves his life. Rinto secretly blocks Madara’s follow-up attack against the dying Guy, and Madara returns his attention to Infinite Tsukuyomi 166 167.
Madara absorbs the God Tree and successfully casts the global genjutsu. Believing his plan complete, he leaves himself open to Black Zetsu, which pierces his chest and reveals its true allegiance. His chakra, the Ten-Tails’ essence, and the God Tree’s power are redirected toward Kaguya’s revival; his body disintegrates as she manifests 168 169.
