The abyss’s unusually rich rewards supplied him with perfected physiques, cultivation methods, divine abilities, treasures, pills, and additional lifespan. While outside civilizations and generations of Great Emperors rose and fell, his accumulated cultivation exceeded the world’s limits 1.

His seclusion ended when Daoist Zixu, Bai Zixuan, and Su Qingyue entered the abyss seeking a Great Emperor’s inheritance. Daoist Zixu attacked him, mistaking his lack of an aura for weakness. Lin Chen nullified the strike with his will, immobilized the intruders, and emerged into the wider worlds 1.

Lin Chen’s initial caution is deliberate rather than timid: he understands the danger of possessing a coveted physique before he can defend it. His decision to remain hidden for 100,000 years demonstrates exceptional patience and self-restraint 1.

After emerging, he is calm, detached, and difficult to impress. Competitive gatherings and coveted inheritances often bore him because his own reserves already exceed their rewards. He explores higher worlds primarily for unfamiliar scenery, quiet, and freedom rather than resources 3 4 5.

His indifference does not prevent harsh retaliation. He destroys hostile armies and sects, and threats against his wife and son cross a firm personal boundary. With his family, however, his severity gives way to visible affection 26 27.

His later insights place peace above dominion. He comes to understand invincibility as freedom from disturbance rather than the need to defeat others, and creation as something distinct from ownership. Despite repeatedly receiving universal submission, he prefers tea, familiar streets, and an ordinary courtyard 14 15 17 29.

He also accepts responsibility for protecting that ordinary life. When the Hongmeng summons reveals his concealed mission, he intervenes because the survival of the realms matters more than remaining undisturbed.
