Background and History
Transmigration and Poverty
Chen Tie has been in his new world for three months when the story begins. His parents died of illness, leaving him responsible for his six-year-old sister, Chen Xi. He supports them by running messages and errands for several small gangs in Duchang City, sometimes attending Unborn Sect sermons for the rice distributed afterward 1.
The word “Proficiency” lies within a mist in his mind, but reading, writing, manual work, and crude gang fighting tricks fail to activate it. He suspects genuine martial arts may be the key, although tuition is initially beyond his means. He also learns the local writing system by secretly watching lessons through a gap he makes in a school courtyard wall 1 2.
His opportunity comes from Old Zhang, a carpenter fatally wounded after avenging his child against Tiger Head Gang leader Zhang Qiang. Before dying, Old Zhang gives Chen Tie enough money to become a martial apprentice. Chen Tie uses fifty taels to enroll for three months at the Fierce Tiger Martial Hall 2 3.
Martial Training and the Liu Family Threat
Under Mo Hong and Shen Yan, Chen Tie begins intensive stance, strength, and fist training. Although Mo Hong considers his bone structure inferior, Chen Tie’s measurable progress convinces him that sustained work can overcome his poor natural aptitude 3 4.
When a white-clad man forces his way into Chen Tie’s courtyard to extort money under the Unborn Sect’s name, Chen Tie kills him and disposes of the body in the Flowing Stream River. He acquires eighty taels of silver, ten taels of gold, and a jade token marked “Liu,” then commits the windfall to cultivation 5.
The dead man proves to be Liu Jingzhao, the Liu Family’s third young master, who had been posing as a preacher. As the family searches the neighborhood and tortures suspects to death, Chen Tie moves to a courtyard near the martial hall and arranges for Chen Xi to stay under Mo Fang’s supervision rather than remain home alone 7 8 10 11.
Chen Tie later kills Xue Hua, who comes seeking revenge for Xue Gui. The encounter gives him the Supple Bone Palm manual and additional funds. Alongside his hall training, he cultivates this defensive art and the Resounding Viscera Blood Scripture privately 13 14 15.
Escort Work and the Dockside Tournament
Xu Da recruits Chen Tie as a part-time escort and supplements his cultivation with Silver Treasure Fish. Shen Yan separately obtains Shen Lineage sponsorship for him. Rising food and medicine costs eventually lead Chen Tie to take patrol work as another source of income 9 11 14 18.
After reaching Flesh Refining, Chen Tie joins an escort assignment to Tianshan City. The party’s encounter with water monkeys leaves two escorts dead; on returning, Chen Tie exchanges his pay for household supplies rather than depreciating silver. His subsequent demonstration of the Fierce Tiger Fist earns three monthly portions of the hall’s secret medicine 23 26.
At the dockside tournament, Chen Tie represents the Shen Lineage against Qi Feng. After more than thirty exchanges, he converts a feint into Fierce Tiger Mountain-Splitting Seal, knocking Qi Feng unconscious and out of the fighting area. The victory makes Chen Tie widely known in Duchang City 28 29.
Shen Zhen rewards him with a thousand taels and raises his monthly support to a hundred taels, three portions of secret medicine, and over a hundred jin of choice meat. Chen Tie welcomes the resources but remains uneasy about the attention his reputation attracts 29.
True Intent and the Martial Hall Grand Competition
Mo Hong introduces Chen Tie to the hall’s chained giant striped tiger so he can learn the spirit behind the Fierce Tiger Fist. Observing its transitions between stillness and motion—and comparing them with the White Crane Martial Arts Hall’s cranes—helps him develop both hard and soft approaches to force 30 31 32 33 34.
Chen Tie reaches Bone Forging in private and initially conceals the breakthrough. He then perfects the Fierce Tiger Fist and awakens Martial Dao True Intent. Around this time, he also discovers that the hall’s secret medicine comes from a tiger transformed into a repeatedly harvestable “flesh field” through an aberrant seed 36 39.
During the Martial Hall Grand Competition, Chen Tie feigns weakness against Yue Feng before revealing his Bone Forging strength. He shatters Yue Feng’s arms, interrupts his breakthrough opportunity, and strikes his dantian Qi sea, crippling his cultivation. Other halls subsequently concede rather than face Chen Tie, securing first place for the Fierce Tiger Martial Hall 46 47.
By the eve of the bandit-suppression expedition, Chen Tie is the hall’s strongest disciple and an expert second only to Mo Hong. Publicly assigned to remain behind, he instead plans to follow the expedition alone and in secret. Mo Hong warns him to flee from Yue Zhengshan, but Chen Tie privately considers whether his concealed strength might be sufficient to defeat or kill him 48 49 50.
Appearance
- Build: Begins as a short, poorly clothed boy; martial training visibly enlarges his frame and develops his muscles 1 3 4.
- Height: Grows from 1.65 m to 1.70 m during early training, later reaching 1.80 m 4 18.
- Clothing: Initially wears ragged hemp clothes. After joining the hall, he wears its uniform, which immediately makes local protection-money collectors more cautious around him 3 4.
Personality
Chen Tie is cautious, observant, and strongly motivated by survival. Even as an errand boy, he stays near exits when visiting gang compounds. As a martial artist, he conceals breakthroughs and reveals only enough strength to obtain support without exposing every advantage. His caution extends to medicine: after witnessing dependence on the New Qi and Blood Pills, he resolves not to take unfamiliar pills carelessly 2 18 23 50.
He is exceptionally diligent despite ordinary aptitude. Fellow disciples regard him as a training fanatic, and public success does not interrupt his routine. In combat, however, diligence gives way to deception and decisive violence: he feigns helplessness before killing Liu Jingzhao and deliberately misleads Yue Feng about his strength 5 22 29 46.
His affection for Chen Xi and gratitude toward his supporters remain central to his conduct. He improves his sister’s food and housing, arranges protection and training for her, and refuses to let his new rank create distance from Shen Yan and Xu Da 9 10 11 22 49.
Abilities and Skills
Proficiency
A mental display records the levels and numerical progress of Chen Tie’s martial arts. It first responds after he begins genuine stance training 1 3.
- Tracks separate techniques and cultivation arts 7 50.
- Registers improvements from practical sparring as well as solitary training 10.
- Records faster progress when nourishment, medicine, observation, and understanding improve his practice 7 29 30.
- Does not eliminate resource requirements or poor innate aptitude; Chen Tie explicitly credits it with making his early Skin Refining breakthrough possible 16 39.
Fierce Tiger Martial Arts
His principal cultivation and combat system emphasizes explosive, domineering force. The stance art carries him through Skin Refining, Flesh Refining, and Bone Forging, while the fist art reaches perfection 8 23 36 39.
- Fierce Tiger Mountain-Splitting Seal: The finishing technique used against Qi Feng 28.
- Fierce Tiger Strikes Rock: Becomes substantially stronger after he learns to gather force before striking 33.
- Internal Refining Chapter: Acquired and studied, but not yet practiced because attempting it before perfecting Bone Forging could injure his viscera 38.
Fierce Tiger Martial Dao True Intent
An intangible will binds his previously scattered force into a concentrated whole, allowing him to release or withdraw it with minimal waste 39 50.
- Coordinates power from his legs, spine, waist, and Qi and blood into a single attack 39.
- Produces a faint tiger-like roar when carried through his punch 39.
- Can exert a heavy, ferocious pressure without his throwing a punch 50.
- Its full effectiveness against Yue Zhengshan remains untested in the documented events 50.
Resounding Viscera Blood Scripture
A breathing and circulation art that strengthens his Qi and blood, heart, and lungs. It has only three layers, and he reaches the third 13 19 36.
- Improves breathing steadiness and internal resilience 13 19.
- Expands his Qi and blood reserves and increases circulation speed 36.
- Helps accelerate his other martial training as those reserves grow 36.
Supple Bone Palm
A four-move palm art taken from Xue Hua, later cultivated to greater mastery 14 38.
- Wraps an opponent’s force in yielding layers to dissipate heavy blows 14.
- Conceals strength beneath soft, drifting movements 19.
- Uses penetrating force capable of injuring internal organs 19.
White Crane Martial Arts
A complementary system emphasizing relaxation, stored strength, and penetrating force rather than continuous outward ferocity 22.
- Reaches Skin Refining through the White Crane arts, creating an additional current of Qi and blood 34.
- Uses that current to strengthen Fierce Tiger attacks as well 34.
- Studies living cranes to compare their relaxed stillness with the tiger’s readiness to kill 31 33.
- Considers gathering all five elemental attributes, but this remains a cultivation conjecture rather than an achieved ability 20.
Practical Skills
- Combat analysis: Studies opponents’ endurance, repeated movements, exposed angles, and weaknesses rather than merely watching match results 42.
- Literacy: Learns the local script through two months of covertly observing lessons 2.
- Improvisation: Suggests a slowly filling, tipping water bucket that automatically flushes the martial hall’s latrine 4.
Equipment and Resources
- Dagger — Used to fatally stab Xue Hua during their rooftop fight 14.
- Martial manuals — Studies the Resounding Viscera Blood Scripture, Xue Hua’s Supple Bone Palm manual, Chen Xi’s White Crane book, and the Fierce Tiger Internal Refining Chapter 13 14 22 38.
- Cultivation supplies — Uses ordinary Qi and Blood Pills, secret medicine, Silver Treasure Fish, and choice meat to sustain intensive training 7 11 21 29.
- Child carrier — Bought so he can carry Chen Xi securely if they must flee Duchang City 18.
- Preferred future weapon: long saber — Chooses it for its reach, cleaving power, and compatibility with Fierce Tiger True Intent; no acquisition or saber training is documented 42.
Relationships
- Chen Xi — Younger sister and dependent. He protects and supports her, then arranges martial training when she asks to learn self-defense 1 11 22.
- Mo Hong — Martial teacher. Initially doubts Chen Tie’s aptitude, later increases his support, teaches him through tiger observation, and personally guides his Bone Forging cultivation 4 26 30 50.
- Shen Yan — Senior fellow disciple, early instructor, and benefactor. Helps him adapt to Skin Refining force and secures Shen Lineage sponsorship; Chen Tie insists their bond should not change after he surpasses him 3 10 14 49.
- Xu Da — Senior fellow disciple and friend. Provides escort work and treasure fish, and continues supporting Chen Tie despite his father’s criticism 9 11 49.
- Mo Fang — Fellow disciple who gives him secret medicine and repeatedly cares for Chen Xi 9 11 26.
- Old Zhang — Neighbor and benefactor whose final gift makes Chen Tie’s martial apprenticeship possible 2 3.
- Shen Zhen — Shen Lineage patron. Substantially increases Chen Tie’s rewards and monthly support after the dockside victory 29.
- Qian Hualing — White Crane Hall master’s daughter. Explains the cranes’ behavior and permits Chen Tie to revisit their pond 31.
- Zhang Long — Fellow disciple with greater initial natural talent. His rapid early progress contrasts with Chen Tie’s slower start; later, he acknowledges the limits of his own understanding after seeing Chen Tie’s insight 4 33.
- He Liang — Patrol partner who introduces him to the guards’ bribery practices and warns him to avoid powerful groups 18.
- Liu Jingzhao and the Liu Family — Chen Tie kills Jingzhao during an attempted extortion; the family’s subsequent hunt threatens him and Chen Xi 5 7 11.
- Yue Feng and Yue Zhengshan — Blazing Mountain Martial Hall enemies. Crippling Yue Feng earns Yue Zhengshan’s hostility and prompts Chen Tie to prepare for a possible future confrontation 46 47 50.
