|---|---|---|
| Skin Refining | 10 | Already attained before his documented breakthrough to Flesh Refining. Uses skin force and holds the advantage while sparring with the newly advanced Chen Tie. |
| Flesh Refining | 21 | Breaks through at dusk while practicing the Fierce Tiger Stance Art. His Qi and blood take root in his flesh, his muscles become more imposing, and his strength increases substantially. Mo Hong praises his solid foundation and stable Qi and blood. His cultivation is subsequently identified as early-stage Flesh Refining 43. |
Appearance
Shen Yan is a square-faced man with a powerful build. His physique becomes more imposing after his breakthrough to Flesh Refining 3 21.
- Wears a martial uniform when representing the Fierce Tiger Martial Hall in competition 43.
- During his Flesh Refining breakthrough, his face flushes red, a blood-colored haze surrounds him, and his muscles ripple beneath his robes 21.
Personality
Shen Yan is generous and attentive toward his juniors. He shares food with Chen Tie from their first day together, helps him recover from training, and repeatedly warns him against sacrificing his health for faster progress. His concern extends beyond martial achievement: when Chen Tie appears unlikely to break through safely, Shen Yan would rather he preserve his health than force the attempt 3 4 8.
He is modest about his successes and willing to share what he knows. He attributes finding Xue Gui’s corpse to luck, explains his Flesh Refining breakthrough without withholding insights, and returns other disciples’ congratulations without putting on airs. Shen Zhen describes him as honest and reliable, though still in need of tempering 13 20 21.
Despite his loyalty to the martial hall, Shen Yan values his companions’ safety above its standing. After being injured in the Grand Competition, he argues that losing a ranking and resources would be preferable to Chen Tie suffering damage to his martial foundation 45.

Background / History
Shen Lineage Background
Shen Yan belongs to the wealthy Shen Lineage. Chen Tie initially knows his family as butchers because their pork shop sells him discounted meat. Shen Yan later explains that this shop is only one stall within a much larger business network: the lineage supplies rice, vegetables, meat, and other necessities in both the inner and outer cities, accounting for thirty percent of Duchang City’s market in those goods 4 14.
Guiding Chen Tie
When Chen Tie enrolls at the Fierce Tiger Martial Hall, Shen Yan explains its customs, helps him collect his uniforms, corrects his stance, and teaches him strength training. He also shares dried meat and introduces him to the medicinal decoction used to recover from exhausting practice 3 4.
Shen Yan becomes one of Chen Tie’s closest companions alongside Xu Da. The two senior brothers worry about Chen Tie’s aggressive iron-sand training and repeatedly urge restraint. After Chen Tie successfully reaches Skin Refining, Shen Yan helps him gain control of his increased strength through sparring 8 9 10.
Xue Gui’s Bounty and Sponsorship
Shen Yan joins Xu Da and Chen Tie in searching Greenwood Ward for the injured fugitive Xue Gui. Chen Tie secretly finds and loots the corpse first, then allows Shen Yan to discover it. Steward Liu pays Shen Yan the thousand-tael bounty, which he divides among the three companions 12 13.
Soon afterward, Shen Yan offers Chen Tie sponsorship from the Shen Lineage: fifteen taels of silver and one portion of secret medicine each month. Chen Tie recognizes that receiving such valuable medicine at his current level is likely thanks to Shen Yan’s support 14 15.
Pressure on the Shen Lineage
Restrictions on pork entering Duchang City disrupt the Shen Lineage’s business as the Five Great Aristocratic Families tighten their control over essential supplies. Shen Yan apologizes that Chen Tie’s monthly payment will be delayed. His family obligations also interrupt his attendance at the martial hall 17 19 21.
After reaching Flesh Refining, Shen Yan volunteers to face Qi Feng in the decisive dockside contest against the Lin Family. Shen Zhen refuses, judging that Shen Yan’s recent breakthrough leaves him badly outmatched. Chen Tie fights instead and wins, prompting Shen Yan to celebrate his junior brother’s previously concealed strength 21 28 29.
Martial Hall Grand Competition
Shen Yan draws lot number seven for the Fierce Tiger Martial Hall. When Yue Song challenges the hall’s early-stage Flesh Refining fighters, Shen Yan accepts at Mo Hong’s signal 41 43.
Yue Song seizes the initiative and steadily wears down Shen Yan’s defense before striking his chest with Mountain Collapse and Bone Shattering. Shen Yan is knocked to the platform’s edge, coughs blood, and cannot continue. Chen Tie gives him a healing pill afterward 43.
Still injured, Shen Yan tries to stop Chen Tie from facing Zhou Han, fearing that the risk to his martial foundation outweighs the competition’s rewards. After Chen Tie reveals his Bone Forging cultivation, Shen Yan and Xu Da become unusually reserved around him. Chen Tie reassures them that their bonds have not changed, allowing their former familiarity to return 45 49.
Relationships

- Xu Da — Fellow senior disciple and close companion. They jointly look after Chen Tie, search for Xue Gui, and discuss the dangers facing their families 8 12 21.
- Mo Hong — Martial teacher and hall master. Shen Yan volunteers as his demonstration partner and later represents the hall at his direction 5 21 43.
- Shen Zhen — Head of Shen Yan’s lineage. Considers him honest and dependable, but prevents him from taking a dangerously unfavorable dockside match 20 28.
- Zhang Long — Fellow disciple. Shen Yan relays news of his devastating injuries and later helps him into the shade after he collapses while trying to practice 34 35 40.
- Yue Song — Rival from the Blazing Mountain Martial Hall who defeats and injures him in the Grand Competition 43.
