| Iron Cloth Shirt — basic mastery | 5 | Completes 100/100 within his first day. Pain decreases, wounds heal faster, and his absorption of medicinal nourishment improves. |
| Iron Cloth Shirt — minor accomplishment | 10 | Completes 400/400 through slope training, qualifying to become an official Human Stake. |

Background / History
Family Break and Entry into Martial Arts
Lin Fan supported his family for five years by hauling cargo at the docks, buying their home and paying their expenses. He saved seventeen taels for martial training, only to discover that his father, Lin Ping, had taken the money to settle his younger brother Lin Ming’s gambling debts. His parents’ continued favoritism toward Lin Ming led him to sever ties and leave home 1.
After spending a night at the Land God Temple, Lin Fan applied to become a Human Stake at the Mountain Suppression Martial Arts Hall. Zhang Meng supplied two taels to help him. Lin Fan endured three wooden-club blows and became one of twelve successful applicants, who were required to learn the basics of Iron Cloth Shirt within ten days 2.
Human Stake Training
His Heaven Rewards Diligence fate awakened during the brutal slope-training regimen. Although his cultivation and recovery quickly outpaced the other applicants, he concealed his advantages by pretending to recover alongside Wang Wu 3 4 5.
A fight over his soap brought him into conflict with Li Feng’s group. Wang Wu and three roommates supported him, while Jiang Tong refused to get involved. The instructor subsequently favored Li Feng, forcing Lin Fan to balance rapid cultivation with the need to avoid attracting dangerous attention 6 8.
Lin Fan perfected Iron Cloth Shirt before reporting to the outer courtyard, but publicly claimed only minor accomplishment. Zhang Yu assigned him to replace the crippled Liu Rui as Young Master Tang’s training dummy. His hidden defensive strength allowed him to endure Tang’s attacks and earn rewards, better meals, and access to martial techniques 14 15 16 17.
Green Snake Bandit Trial
Lin Fan was sent with twenty outer courtyard disciples on a dangerous mission. After surviving an arrow ambush, he killed his attackers and intensified his training rather than rely on the senior disciples for protection 23 24.
During a later encounter, he helped Yang Kuan kill a stronger bandit by driving a broken arrow into the back of the man’s head. The fight shattered Lin Fan’s shoulder, but established a bond with Yang Kuan, who offered to introduce him to his master 26.
Yang Kuan eventually revealed that the expedition had become a deadly trial for the Green Snake Bandits’ young chief, with a powerful protector preventing escape. Lin Fan cultivated desperately, developed Gang Qi, and reached a level where he could contend with opponents above his own rank. He ultimately rescued Yang Kuan and another disciple, returning with roughly ten thousand taels of silver 27 29 32 33 34.
Yue Shan’s Disciple
Yang Kuan secured an offer for Lin Fan to become Yue Shan’s nominal disciple once he publicly demonstrated major accomplishment in Iron Cloth Shirt. Zhang Yu and Li Feng attempted to prevent this by arranging for Lu Hao to cripple him and planning to contaminate his medicine with Bone-Eroding Powder. Lin Fan instead defeated Lu Hao, impressing witnesses with his ability to exploit openings 34 37.
After privately reaching Body Tempering Perfection, Lin Fan revealed the required Iron Cloth Shirt attainment and was accepted by Yue Shan. He entered the inner courtyard, received disciple robes and a private training room, and became eligible for a monthly stipend of twenty taels 38 39.
Yang Kuan’s account of Martial Dao Monsters—whose Divine Ability Bones could make them targets for harvesting—gave Lin Fan another reason to conceal his unusual talent. The account does not establish that Lin Fan possesses such a bone 39.
Bone Forging and Departure
Seeking a Bone Forging method, Lin Fan visited the black market. Zhang Yu followed him intending to kill him, but Lin Fan crushed his hand, broke his neck, and took his money pouch. He then bought the Bone Forging Art and killed six robbers who ambushed him afterward 42 43.
His new standing also allowed him to protect Zhang Meng’s noodle shop from the Blood Wolf Gang. He secretly repaid his friend with two gold leaves. When Lin Ming later tried to exploit his reputation to escape gambling debts, Lin Fan beat him instead of offering protection 45.
After Chen Yang ruptured Yue Shan’s apertures, Lin Fan and Yang Kuan vowed revenge. Yue Shan discouraged them from throwing away their lives, gave each one hundred taels of gold, and sent them to protect the Tang Family Estate. Recognizing that Li Feng’s appointment as head senior brother made the hall unsafe, Lin Fan gathered Wang Wu, Meng Lin, Fang Xiang, and Sun Ming and led them away 50.
Appearance
- Dark skin and thick calluses: His years as a dock porter are visible when he first applies to the martial hall 2.
- Honest-looking demeanor: His roommates initially find his guileless appearance difficult to reconcile with his brutality in a fight 6.
- Changing complexion: By the time he reveals major accomplishment in Iron Cloth Shirt, his arm remains dusky but is lighter after spending less time in the sun 38.
- Inner courtyard robes: Receives three sets after becoming Yue Shan’s disciple 39.
Personality
Lin Fan treats martial cultivation as his route out of exploitation and dependence. He accepts extreme pain and mortal danger rather than abandon that ambition, but repeatedly warns himself against arrogance after breakthroughs 2 3 15 22.
He is deliberate about what others learn of his strength. He feigns exhaustion, limits his performance against Li Feng, and pretends to learn techniques more slowly than he actually does. This caution reflects both the hall’s hostile hierarchy and his fear that extraordinary talent could make him a target 4 11 13 39 42.
Gratitude and grudges strongly influence his decisions. He remembers Zhang Meng’s financial help, credits Young Master Tang for enabling his rise, and risks himself to rescue Yang Kuan. Conversely, he responds fiercely to theft, coercion, and attempts to block his cultivation 6 18 21 34 35 45.
His loyalty does not extend indiscriminately. He refuses to deprive Wang Wu of further medicinal food, but rejects Jiang Tong’s request for protection after Jiang Tong declined to support the dormitory group 6 10.
