History

Green Snake Bandits’ Trial

Yang Kuan and Lin Fan first formed a bond while fighting a bandit. The bandit used Lin Fan as bait and broke Yang Kuan’s ribs with a palm strike. After Lin Fan wounded their attacker with a broken arrow, Yang Kuan delivered the killing blow. He let Lin Fan keep the looted money and offered to introduce him to his master 26.

Back at the manor, Yang Kuan supplied Lin Fan with Broken Bone Salve. He later explained that their mission had become a deadly trial for the Green Snake Bandits’ young chief: a powerful protector prevented anyone from escaping. Expecting to die, he urged Lin Fan to flee when battle began and carry a final message to his master 27.

Yang Kuan survived the ambush that reduced the thirty-person expedition to seven survivors. Before the final battle, he entrusted Lin Fan with silver and letters for his master and parents, advising him to escape through the south gate 30 31.

The bandits subsequently captured Yang Kuan and another inner courtyard disciple, leaving them wounded and tied to a pillar. Lin Fan returned, killed the bandits, and carried both men away from the burning manor. Unaware of Lin Fan’s actual strength, Yang Kuan accepted his explanation that he had rescued them after seeing the fire. He pledged to repay the life-saving debt 33 34.

Bringing Lin Fan into the Inner Courtyard

After returning to Qingshan County, Yang Kuan secured Yue Shan’s agreement to accept Lin Fan as a nominal disciple once he demonstrated major accomplishment in Iron Cloth Shirt. Yang Kuan then joined the hall’s retaliatory expedition, which found the Green Snake Bandits’ lair deserted 34 38.

When Lin Fan announced that he met the requirement, Yang Kuan tested his arm with a cleaver. Delighted by the result, he immediately brought him to Yue Shan. Following Lin Fan’s acceptance, Yang Kuan handled his registration, helped him obtain robes and a private training room, and began teaching him the Body Tempering Art. Tang Yan later joined these lessons 38 39 42.

Law Enforcement and Corruption

Yang Kuan accompanied Lin Fan to investigate Hu Gao’s abuse of Human Stake candidates. After hearing that Hu Gao withheld medicinal food to fund visits to Pleasant Spring Pavilion, he agreed to arrest him. When Hu Gao attacked Lin Fan, Yang Kuan intervened, helped subdue him, and escorted him to the Law Enforcement Court 40 41.

His authority had limits. He warned Lin Fan that Zhang Yu’s embezzlement involved interests even Yue Shan could not safely challenge. He later revealed that Zhang Yu served chief disciple Chen Yang, whose influence prevented action against the outer courtyard’s corruption 44 47.

Yue Shan’s Defeat and Departure

Yue Shan intended to recommend Yang Kuan as the outer courtyard’s eldest senior brother so he could reform its corrupt practices. Yang Kuan cared little about the position itself; he feared that his master’s determination would provoke a confrontation with Chen Yang 47.

That fear proved justified. When Chen Yang defeated Yue Shan and publicly pinned him beneath his foot, Yang Kuan charged forward in fury. Chen Yang blasted him away, leaving him coughing blood. Lin Fan’s attempt to intervene ended similarly 49.

After learning that Yue Shan’s apertures had been crippled, Yang Kuan swore revenge. Yue Shan instead entrusted him with seven books of cultivation insights, one hundred taels of gold, and responsibility for guiding Lin Fan. Yang Kuan reluctantly departed with Lin Fan and his four former roommates for a protection assignment at the Tang Family Estate 50.

Personality

Yang Kuan treats Lin Fan with warmth despite their initial difference in status. He shares medicine, offers protection, and follows through on his promise to recommend him to Yue Shan. He is also considerate of Lin Fan’s friends, initially waiting outside their reunion because he knows his rank would make them uncomfortable 26 27 34 40 41.

He strongly values the martial hall’s rules and is outraged by the exploitation of its weakest trainees. Nevertheless, he recognizes both legal restraints and political dangers: he cannot freely punish an unresisting suspect, and he cautions Lin Fan against confronting corruption protected by Chen Yang 40 41 44 47.

His loyalty to Yue Shan overrides his usual caution. He attacks Chen Yang despite their overwhelming difference in strength and openly weeps when his injured master makes arrangements for the disciples’ safety 49 50.
