Background / History
Previous Life and Childhood
Tang San spent his previous life in the Tang Sect and worked as an assassin. Its teaching that “a teacher for a day is a father for life” remained deeply ingrained after his reincarnation 5 11 13.
Raised in Holy Soul Village by Tang Hao, he cooked and cared for his father from the age of three or four. Tang Hao spent their money on alcohol while Tang San scrimped and saved. His unusually independent behavior led Tang Hao to suspect that someone had possessed his son; seeing him awaken Blue Silver Grass and the Clear Sky Hammer eventually convinced Tang Hao otherwise 14.
Enrollment and Meeting Luo Chen
At six, Tang San traveled to Nuoding City with Old Jack to enter the junior academy. He became captivated by Luo Chen’s appearance, mistook him for a girl, and offered him a worn handkerchief because he thought Luo Chen had been crying. Learning that Luo Chen was a boy left him visibly crestfallen 2 3.
An academy guard initially rejected Tang San’s certificate, believing that Blue Silver Grass could not possess Innate Full Soul Power. Luo Chen’s intervention secured his admission. While accompanying him toward registration, Luo Chen warned him that Yu Xiaogang sought exceptionally talented disciples to validate his theories 3.
Becoming Yu Xiaogang’s Disciple
When an unfamiliar man offered to teach him, Tang San initially demanded a teacher of at least Soul Douluo rank who could help him hunt a hundred-year Soul Beast. The man changed his mind by identifying his concealed twin Martial Souls and claiming that their potential conflict could make his body explode—and that he might be the only person capable of resolving it 5.
Tang San knelt and accepted him before learning that he was Yu Xiaogang. The revelation shocked him into vomiting blood and fainting. Although he regretted the decision, his belief in lifelong obligations to a teacher made him reluctant to withdraw. He subsequently defended Yu Xiaogang and repeatedly tried, unsuccessfully, to persuade Luo Chen to become a fellow disciple 5.
Yu Xiaogang and the academy dean accompanied Tang San to the Soul Hunting Forest. Despite the dean’s objections, Tang San trusted Yu Xiaogang and absorbed a Mandala Snake as his first Soul Ring 6 9 12.
Duel with Luo Chen
After returning from his hunt, Tang San intended to help Luo Chen obtain a Soul Ring. Instead, he learned that Luo Chen had disappeared and might have died in the forest. He shut himself in his dormitory for three days without eating or drinking 9.
When Luo Chen returned, Yu Xiaogang insisted that Tang San defeat him to prove the value of his theories. Tang San initially resisted fighting someone he wanted to befriend, but ultimately agreed. He also hoped to change Luo Chen’s opinion of his teacher 9 10.
During the duel, Luo Chen severed Tang San’s Blue Silver Grass, withered it with superior venom, and deflected his sleeve arrows. A scorpion-tail strike pierced Tang San’s shoulder and poisoned him. Recognizing the overwhelming difference in strength, Tang San conceded; Luo Chen then extracted the venom 11.
Rejection of His Teacher’s Guidance
Yu Xiaogang publicly called Tang San and his Martial Soul useless after the defeat. Luo Chen challenged the contradiction with Yu Xiaogang’s own theories and accused him of using Tang San as an experimental subject. He argued that a poison-focused animal Soul Ring neglected Blue Silver Grass’s defining vitality 11 12.
Tang San investigated Martial Souls and Soul Beasts in the library himself. Finding plant-type alternatives to the Mandala Snake, he concluded that his trust had been exploited. The next day, he thanked Luo Chen, declared his intention to sever his master-disciple relationship, and vowed revenge against Yu Xiaogang 12 13.
Tang Hao’s Return and the Missed Farewell
Tang Hao reappeared and revealed that he was a Titled Douluo who had secretly remained nearby. He had beaten Yu Xiaogang and forced him to surrender the method for cultivating twin Martial Souls. Tang San resented both his father’s childhood neglect and his failure to intervene before the Mandala Snake absorption 14.
Tang Hao proposed taking him away to find a better teacher. Tang San requested time to punish Yu Xiaogang and say goodbye to Luo Chen, receiving one month. However, Luo Chen departed before he could visit. Tang San found a farewell letter addressed to whoever discovered it and left with a renewed ambition to meet Luo Chen again “at the summit” 14.
Appearance
- Childhood build: Skinny and dark-skinned when he enrolls at Nuoding Academy 3.
- Growth: Tang Hao remarks that he has grown noticeably after acquiring his first Soul Ring 14.
- Technique-related features: His pupils become faintly purple when using Purple Demon Eye, while Mysterious Jade Hand gives his hands a jade-white luster 11.
Personality
Tang San initially places considerable faith in teachers and personal obligations. Even after discovering Yu Xiaogang’s identity, he remains his disciple because he has already performed the formal kowtows. That loyalty eventually gives way to independent investigation when his defeat and public humiliation expose contradictions in his teacher’s conduct 5 11 12.
His attachment to Luo Chen is unusually persistent. He tries to comfort him at their first meeting, mourns his apparent death, and continues seeking friendship despite repeated rejection. He does not initially blame Luo Chen for humiliating Yu Xiaogang and dislikes the prospect of becoming his enemy 3 9 13.
In combat, he can acknowledge an insurmountable disadvantage rather than prolong a futile fight. This restraint contrasts with his vindictiveness toward perceived betrayal: after concluding that Yu Xiaogang used him as a test subject, he vows to make his former teacher suffer 11 12 13.
Abilities & Skills
Twin Martial Souls
Tang San possesses Blue Silver Grass and the Clear Sky Hammer, though he initially keeps his second Martial Soul secret 5 14.

- Demonstrated limits: Luo Chen cuts through the vines with his pincers and withers them with scorpion venom 11.
