Background / History

Tom Riddle rejects his original name and insists on being known only as Voldemort. Dumbledore later states that an already extreme Tom was possessed and corrupted by a soul fragment left behind by Salazar Slytherin. Voldemort repeatedly divided his own soul through Horcruxes in an attempt to escape that influence, but this pursuit caused further corruption and instability 568.

After his apparent defeat, Voldemort survives as a weakened remnant attached to Quirinus Quirrell. His soul is dispersed across several Horcruxes, including Tom Riddle’s Diary, Ravenclaw’s Diadem, Marvolo Gaunt’s Ring, Slytherin’s Locket, Hufflepuff’s Goblet, Harry Potter, and Nagini 400 564 570.

After Quirrell is defeated, Voldemort’s remnant soul escapes through the castle walls 63 64.

His reputation remains powerful enough for Sean to impersonate him with the Smoke Rope Curse. Mallow and Barrett Cotton both believe Sean’s black-smoke projection is the real Dark Lord, demonstrating the lingering fear attached to Voldemort’s name 89 90 135.

The Diary and the Chamber of Secrets

The diary fragment manipulates students and uses the Basilisk to spread terror at Hogwarts. While possessing Millicent, Tom Riddle reveals a plan to kill Sean and transfer his soul into Harry’s body in order to be reborn 126 159.

The fragment summons the Basilisk against Sean and Harry, but Sean kills the creature and later duels the possessed Millicent directly. Tom vows revenge after losing control of the Chamber’s situation 160 163.

Return and Conflict with Sean

After regaining followers, Voldemort orders Barty Crouch Jr. to bring Sean to him, believing Sean possesses a divided portion of his own power and the treasure of Slytherin 286. He later returns publicly at the Triwizard Tournament grounds, where he and Sean each claim to be the true Voldemort before the Death Eaters 373.

Voldemort appears in the Ministry of Magic, openly confirming his return before Ministry officials and Aurors. He duels Sean through the Ministry atrium and grand hall, but retreats after Sean’s full-moon-enhanced abilities and Dumbledore’s support leave him unwilling to risk a prolonged fight while Horcruxes remain 469 470 471.

Battle of Hogwarts
