Background / History

Tom Riddle rejects his original name and insists on being known only as Voldemort. Dumbledore later states that an already extreme Tom was possessed and corrupted by a soul fragment left behind by Salazar Slytherin. Voldemort repeatedly divided his own soul through Horcruxes in an attempt to escape that influence, but this pursuit caused further corruption and instability 568.

After his apparent defeat, Voldemort survives as a weakened remnant attached to Quirinus Quirrell. His soul is dispersed across several Horcruxes, including Tom Riddle’s Diary, Ravenclaw’s Diadem, Marvolo Gaunt’s Ring, Slytherin’s Locket, Hufflepuff’s Goblet, Harry Potter, and Nagini 400 564 570.

Sean’s destruction and absorption of Voldemort-related soul fragments leaves Voldemort divided, prompting the Dark Lord to identify Sean as an “other half” carrying part of his power 286 373. During the final conflict, the phantom of Salazar Slytherin attempts to seize Voldemort’s body; after Voldemort is defeated, Slytherin emerges from his remains 573 574.

Appearance

In his restored form, Voldemort is bald, gray-skinned, noseless, and has pronounced snake-like facial features. He wears loose dark robes and frequently manifests or travels through black smoke 373.

  • Pale gray skin and a bald head.
  • Snake-like eyes and facial features.
  • A flat, noseless face.
  • Black smoke can form around his body, become serpents, or carry him through the air.
  • Capable of physical flight without a broom or visible support 374.

Personality

Voldemort is intensely prideful and obsessive about being recognized as the greatest wizard and Dark Lord. He reacts violently to being called “Tom” and treats his identity as inseparable from superiority, power, and fear 373.

He is also calculating, suspicious, and incapable of complete trust. Even while praising Severus Snape or relying on the Death Eaters, he questions their motives and prepares to punish failure. Barty Crouch Jr. and Bellatrix Lestrange receive exceptional favor, yet Voldemort still withholds complete trust from them 359 383.

His cruelty extends to his own followers. He considers the deaths of loyal Death Eaters acceptable if they advance his plans, kills subordinates for failure, and uses fear to enforce obedience 377 563. Beneath his arrogance, however, he fears Salazar Slytherin’s attempt to take control of his body and refuses to submit to any power above himself 570 573.

Abilities & Skills

Dark Magic and Spellcraft

Voldemort possesses a broad repertoire of advanced and destructive magic. His spellcasting combines rapid casting, Transfiguration, curses, and specialized Dark Magic created or modified through his exceptional magical talent 374 388.

  • Casts the Killing Curse repeatedly, including against Sean, Harry, Snape, and Sirius 375 484 563 566.
  • Uses Fiendfire Curse offensively, shaping it into fireballs and fiery serpents 374 470.
  • Creates black-smoke serpents to bind, attack, transport, or overwhelm targets 63 455.
  • Uses black smoke to transform his body and escape through the Dark Mark or enclosed spaces 379 562.
  • Performs physical flight, an ability noted as distinct from ordinary levitation or Apparition 374.
  • Can create or modify powerful spells with unusual ease 388.

Smoke Rope Curse

The Smoke Rope Curse is Voldemort’s signature black-smoke magic. It can take the form of ropes, hands, serpents, humanoid figures, or massive waves of smoke 63 374.

  • Produces black-smoke serpents capable of attacking and restraining multiple opponents 63.
  • Creates a large-scale smoke wave to overwhelm Sean in direct combat 374.
  • Allows rapid movement and retreat in smoke form 379.
  • Sean can replicate the spell at comparable power, undermining its uniqueness and contributing to Death Eater doubts about Voldemort’s identity 374.

Legilimency

Voldemort is regarded as an exceptional Legilimens, capable of reading thoughts and detecting attempts to observe him through magical means 90 350.

  • Uses mental pressure to intimidate followers and expose dishonesty.
  • Detects Sean’s Spiritual Vision while Sean observes a future involving Dolores Umbridge 350.
  • Engages Sean in mutual Legilimency during their confrontation, allowing both to sense the Death Eaters’ wavering loyalty 373.
  • His paranoia prevents him from extending unconditional trust even to long-serving allies 383.

Horcrux Immortality

Voldemort divides his soul into Horcruxes, allowing fragments of him to survive even when his body is destroyed. This method preserves his existence but fractures his identity and leaves his soul anchors vulnerable to destruction 64 367.

  • A fragment possesses Quirrell during Voldemort’s weakened state 63.
  • Tom Riddle’s Diary contains adolescent memories and manipulates its users, including Ginny Weasley and Millicent Bulstrode 126 137 159.
  • Harry unknowingly carries a parasitic fragment of Voldemort’s soul 564.
  • The destruction of the Diadem, Locket, Goblet, and other Horcruxes progressively weakens Voldemort’s ability to survive defeat 367 495 570.
  • His attempt to use Horcruxes to avoid Salazar Slytherin’s influence ultimately fails 568 573.

Nine Serpent Magic

Voldemort can manifest nine giant serpents from his own body, each with a different color and form. The transformation greatly increases his magical power and becomes his principal weapon in the final battle 570.

  • The serpent manifestation amplifies his magic dozens of times over 570.
  • One serpent head wields Fiendfyre against Sean 571.
  • Sean destroys several heads with the Sword of the Flame Demon and Snake King Eyes 571.
  • The form’s defeat leaves Voldemort severely damaged and leads directly to Salazar Slytherin’s emergence 574.

Horcruxes

  • Tom Riddle’s Diary — Contains a younger soul fragment with Voldemort’s Hogwarts-era memories; manipulates Ginny and later possesses Millicent 126 137 159.
  • Ravenclaw’s Diadem — Destroyed by Sean with Fiery Curse after its soul fragment is petrified 367.
  • Marvolo Gaunt’s Ring — Defeated by Sean, triggering Sean’s fifth Magic Awakening 434.

  • Hufflepuff’s Goblet — Destroyed by Sean during the Battle of Hogwarts 570.
  • Harry Potter — Carries a parasitic soul fragment that is separated and contained by Dumbledore after Voldemort kills Harry 563 564.
  • Nagini — A living Horcrux and Voldemort’s serpent; she is released during the final battle to escape Sean’s preparations 433 570.

Relationships

  • Sean Bulstrode — Voldemort calls Sean his “other half” and seeks to reclaim both Sean’s power and body. Their rivalry becomes the central conflict of Voldemort’s return 286 373.
  • Harry Potter — Originally intended as Voldemort’s replacement body; later revealed to carry a fragment of Voldemort’s soul. Voldemort kills Harry with the Killing Curse during the Hogwarts invasion 159 563 564.
  • Albus Dumbledore — Former teacher and long-standing adversary. Dumbledore continues to offer Voldemort a path to preserve his independent consciousness, but Voldemort rejects him completely 568 570.
  • Barty Crouch Jr. — Voldemort’s most favored subordinate, treated almost like a son. Voldemort gives him a magical arm forged through a blood-bond curse that strengthens their connection 359 433.
  • Bellatrix Lestrange — One of Voldemort’s most trusted followers and his mistress. She dies while protecting Voldemort and the unborn descendant she carries 359 573.
  • Severus Snape — A valued but distrusted servant whose betrayal provokes Voldemort’s fury. Voldemort attempts to kill Snape after learning he has abandoned him 383 484.
  • Lucius Malfoy — A useful but unreliable Death Eater whom Voldemort tolerates for his wealth and political understanding; Voldemort later endangers Lucius’s son Draco for his plans 434 520.
  • Nagini — Voldemort’s great serpent and living Horcrux, kept close at Malfoy Manor and released during the final battle 433 570.
  • Salazar Slytherin — The hidden force influencing Voldemort’s life and Horcrux-making. Slytherin attempts to possess Voldemort and eventually emerges from his defeated body 568 573 574.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Remnant at Hogwarts

Voldemort first operates as a weakened soul fragment attached to Quirrell, seeking the Philosopher’s Stone. He uses black-smoke serpents and powerful magic against Sean and Harry, but Quirrell’s damaged body limits him. After Quirrell is defeated, Voldemort’s remnant soul escapes through the castle walls 63 64.

His reputation remains powerful enough for Sean to impersonate him with the Smoke Rope Curse. Mallow and Barrett Cotton both believe Sean’s black-smoke projection is the real Dark Lord, demonstrating the lingering fear attached to Voldemort’s name 89 90 135.

The Diary and the Chamber of Secrets

The diary fragment manipulates students and uses the Basilisk to spread terror at Hogwarts. While possessing Millicent, Tom Riddle reveals a plan to kill Sean and transfer his soul into Harry’s body in order to be reborn 126 159.

The fragment summons the Basilisk against Sean and Harry, but Sean kills the creature and later duels the possessed Millicent directly. Tom vows revenge after losing control of the Chamber’s situation 160 163.

Return and Conflict with Sean

After regaining followers, Voldemort orders Barty Crouch Jr. to bring Sean to him, believing Sean possesses a divided portion of his own power and the treasure of Slytherin 286. He later returns publicly at the Triwizard Tournament grounds, where he and Sean each claim to be the true Voldemort before the Death Eaters 373.

Their battle establishes Sean as an opponent capable of matching Voldemort’s Dark Magic, Smoke Rope Curse, flight, Legilimency, and Fiendfire. Voldemort acknowledges Sean’s strength but continues to insist that Sean is destined to be absorbed into him 374 377.

Ministry Battle and Open War

Voldemort appears in the Ministry of Magic, openly confirming his return before Ministry officials and Aurors. He duels Sean through the Ministry atrium and grand hall, but retreats after Sean’s full-moon-enhanced abilities and Dumbledore’s support leave him unwilling to risk a prolonged fight while Horcruxes remain 469 470 471.

He responds by recruiting Dark Wizards, targeting Azkaban, negotiating with Dementors and giants, and attempting to reshape the magical world into a pure-blood regime 483 489. He also forces Draco Malfoy into a secret mission against Hogwarts despite Lucius’s objections 520.

Battle of Hogwarts

Voldemort’s forces invade Hogwarts through the Chamber of Secrets after Draco’s plan compromises the school. He arrives personally, summons Death Eaters, werewolves, and giants through the Dark Mark, and demands submission after Dumbledore’s apparent death and Harry’s defeat 556 562 563.

Voldemort kills Harry with the Killing Curse, unknowingly enabling the parasitic soul fragment inside Harry to be separated from him in King’s Cross 563 564. He subsequently battles Snape, Sirius, Lupin, Dumbledore, and Sean as the conflict escalates across Hogwarts 565 566 569.

Final Defeat

With most of his Horcruxes destroyed, Voldemort unleashes Nine Serpent Magic and attempts to overwhelm Sean and Dumbledore. Sean destroys Hufflepuff’s Goblet, prevents Nagini’s escape with Kulkan, and defeats the nine-headed serpent manifestation 570 571.

Voldemort continues resisting even as Salazar Slytherin’s phantom attempts to claim his body. Bellatrix dies protecting Voldemort, but the combined force of Sean and Dumbledore defeats him. His broken body then becomes the vessel through which Salazar Slytherin is reborn 573 574.
