Background / History
A Century-Old Separation
A century before the present story, the man Leng Yaozhu loved brought her to Eastsea and introduced her to Yali. Her attachment to him also influenced her willingness to take a position there. His advice taught her to communicate openly rather than let unspoken feelings become destructive 27 28.
She applied that lesson when a misunderstanding threatened her relationship with her younger sister, Leng Yulai. By recognizing the problem and discussing it directly, she prevented Yulai from taking what she describes as a “road of no return” 27.
Before departing, the man acknowledged Yaozhu’s feelings but refused to leave anything that would bind her life to him. He bade farewell to both sisters, spread seven-colored wings, and vanished into the sunset through a distortion of space. Unable to stop him, Yaozhu resolved to cultivate so that she would never again be powerless. Even after a century of gaining strength and status, she continued to mourn his absence 27 28.
Spirit Pagoda Career
During the selection of Eastsea’s Heavenly Pillar Tower Master, Leng Yaozhu chose another tower position that better served her family’s interests. She hoped Leng Yulai would obtain the Eastsea post, but Woz unexpectedly won the selection instead 28.
Woz later refused Qiangu Dongfeng’s recruitment and fought him. Although the result was not publicly established, rumors described Dongfeng’s crushing defeat, and he subsequently stopped troubling Woz. Yaozhu regarded the resulting damage to the Qiangu family’s prestige as a substantial favor. She also attempted to recruit Woz, without success 28.
By the present story, she is the Spirit Pagoda’s vice pagoda master and handles additional business in Eastsea. She is not Eastsea’s local pagoda master; her good relationship with its master allows her to maintain an office there 27.
Appearance
- Hair: Long, straight crimson hair that falls like a waterfall 37.
- Face: Exquisite features, willow-leaf brows, and red lips 27 34.
- Clothing: A fitted white dress embroidered with phoenix patterns 37.
- Bearing: Proud and lofty, compared to a phoenix above the nine heavens. Her public seriousness gives way to warm smiles around Zhou Yang 37 38.
Personality
Leng Yaozhu values direct communication, particularly among those close to her. Her experience with Leng Yulai convinced her that misunderstandings should be addressed promptly rather than concealed. With Yali, she speaks plainly and considers elaborate formalities unnecessary between longtime friends 27.
Her professional composure conceals enduring loneliness. She envies Yali’s renewed happiness but remains genuinely glad for her, hiding her own sadness during their conversation. When interrupted while crying over the past, she quickly wipes away her tears and returns to work. She is notably cold toward men other than the person she loves 27 28.
Despite that reserve, she has a playful, inquisitive side. Curiosity about Yali’s mysterious companion leads her to skip a meeting and secretly prepare to observe the Spirit Ascension Platform, only to become embarrassed when Yali catches her 29 34.
As Zhou Yang’s teacher, she is generous, protective, and respectful of his privacy. She provides valuable resources without demanding explanations for his unusual armor, explicitly acknowledging that he is entitled to his own secrets 37 38.

- Phoenix Seeks Phoenix — A phoenix-carved ring given to Zhou Yang upon his acceptance as her disciple. This rank-nine defensive Soul Tool can withstand three attacks from a Titled Douluo when charged 37.
- Cultivation resources — Treasures stored in the gifted ring, which Zhou Yang estimates could support an ordinary person’s cultivation all the way to Titled Douluo 38.
- Black Zi-O II Ridewatch — Kept for years in the Leng family’s most important treasury. After witnessing Zhou Yang’s transformation, she retrieves it and gives it to him. Zhou Yang recognizes it as a Zi-O II Ridewatch missing its other half; Yaozhu tells him she obtained it by chance years earlier 38.
Relationships
- Zhou Yang — Her disciple and the person she recognizes as the man she loved a century earlier. He does not remember their shared past, prompting her to pursue a new relationship with him rather than rely on their old memories 34 37 38.
- Yali — A longtime friend whom she regards as an elder sister. Yali helps her accept Zhou Yang’s lack of recognition and encourages her to create new memories with him. Their closeness also accommodates teasing and mild rivalry over his care 27 34 37.
- Leng Yulai — Her younger sister. Yaozhu resolved a dangerous misunderstanding between them and later hoped Yulai would become Eastsea’s Heavenly Pillar Tower Master 27 28.
- Woz — Eastsea’s Heavenly Pillar Tower Master and an administrative associate. She appreciates his indirect help against the Qiangu family but finds his proclamations about the king bewildering 28 34.
- Na’er — Yali’s young companion, familiar with Yaozhu through earlier Spirit Pagoda visits. Na’er affectionately calls her “Auntie Leng” 27 29 37.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Recognizing Zhou Yang
After noticing Yali’s unusually cheerful mood, Leng Yaozhu agrees to arrange platform tickets and privately plans to investigate the additional guest. Woz then visits her office, warning that her long wait will bear fruit and that the “great advent” will return, though she cannot understand his meaning 27 28.
Caught preparing to spy on the visit, she enters the platform with Yali’s permission. Zhou Yang’s armor reminds her of the past, while Woz’s celebration connects his earlier hints to Zi-O. She initially asks to recruit Zhou Yang out of admiration for his talent, then recognizes his face when he cancels his transformation 29 34.
Yali prevents her from rushing to him and explains that he does not remember them. Though distressed, Yaozhu accepts the possibility of building a new future together. During his subsequent encounter with the Golden-haired Lion Mastiff, she nearly terminates the session for his safety, but Yali persuades her to trust him 34 36.
Becoming His Teacher
Following the mastiff’s destruction, Yaozhu summons Zhou Yang, promises to suppress the incident, and offers him discipleship. He accepts after Yali endorses her as a suitable mentor. Yaozhu immediately presents him with Phoenix Seeks Phoenix 37.
The next morning, she gives him the black Zi-O II Ridewatch retrieved from her family treasury. Her willingness to offer both resources and privacy moves Zhou Yang to promise that he will never forget her kindness 38.
