Personality

Tang Hao combines an explosive temper with calculated pragmatism. Watching Lin Chuan beat Tang San enrages him, but he avoids intervening publicly because revealing the Clear Sky Hammer would attract Spirit Hall. Rather than immediately kill Lin Chuan, he plans to break his resistance and turn his talent into an asset for Tang San 11 24.

He treats other people’s affection and loyalty as resources. He admits that he pursued Ah Yin specifically for her Soul Ring, then dismisses her genuine feelings as naïveté. When he suspects that Tang San’s body contains an outsider, he accepts the possibility without anger, provided that Tang San can still help him overthrow Spirit Hall and avenge his feud 25 33.

His arrogance gives way to self-preservation when confronted with overwhelming strength. He belittles Yu Xiaogang and assumes that his sect’s reputation will deter Lin Chuan’s possible backers, but considers abandoning Tang San when Zhang Lexuan appears. Captivity drives him to accept mutilation and confess his secrets in exchange for a chance to survive 23 29 30 31 33.

Abilities & Skills

Clear Sky Hammer

Tang Hao’s Martial Soul identifies him to Yu Xiaogang as the Clear Sky Douluo 23.

  • Can manifest a miniature hammer in his palm and dismiss it immediately 23.
  • Refrains from displaying it publicly at Nuoding Academy to avoid exposing himself to Spirit Hall 11.
  • Cannot summon it inside Zhang Lexuan’s Lunar Eclipse Cage · Eternal Night Moon Burial 31.

Titled Douluo Pressure and Soul Power

His pressure can overwhelm much weaker soul masters without a physical attack 23.

  • Forces Yu Xiaogang to his knees and leaves him struggling to breathe 23.
  • Channels Soul Power into the injured Tang San, stabilizing his breathing and restoring some color to his face 24.
  • Is driven backward by Zhang Lexuan’s Peerless Douluo pressure while already seriously injured 30.

Ring Detonation

Tang Hao possesses the Clear Sky Sect’s Ring Detonation technique 29 31.

  • Detonating all nine rings is presented as a desperate, life-consuming option against Zhang Lexuan, with no guarantee of injuring her 29.
  • Attempts to resort to the technique while trapped, but the domain prevents his Soul Rings from responding 31.

Soul Beast Identification

A mental-power Soul Bone enables Tang Hao to recognize Ah Yin’s true identity when they first meet 33.

  • Uses that knowledge to plan his pursuit of her and acquisition of her Soul Ring 33.
  • Also recognizes Xiao Wu as a transformed Hundred-Thousand-Year Soul Beast 17 19.

Covert Observation and Communication

  • Watches events in Dorm Seven from hiding, including Tang San’s beating and Yu Xiaogang’s humiliation 11 16.
  • Conceals himself near Tang San’s room after treating him to observe his recovery 25.
  • Uses voice transmission to summon Lin Chuan to a grove at Nuoding Academy 29.

  • Limb Soul Bones — Removed with his severed right leg and left arm; their loss precipitated his cultivation decline 32.
  • Ah Yin’s Soul Bone — Reserved for Tang San, but Tang Hao later intended to use it himself to recover from mutilation. He died before carrying out that plan 31 32 34.
  • Pope Token — Given to Yu Xiaogang when Tang Hao entrusted him with Tang San’s cultivation and the scheme involving Xiao Wu 24.

History

Ah Yin’s Sacrifice and Exile

Tang Hao recognized Ah Yin as a transformed Hundred-Thousand-Year Soul Beast through his mental-power Soul Bone. He pursued her with the intention of securing his ninth Soul Ring. After she became pregnant with his child, he repeatedly leaked their whereabouts to Spirit Hall and coordinated events to force her into sacrificing herself for him 30 33.

The conflict surrounding Tang Hao led to Spirit Hall driving the Clear Sky Sect into seclusion, with many of its talented members dying in the fighting. Tang Hao was expelled from the sect and carried guilt over having angered his father to death. He spent subsequent years drinking to numb that pain while remaining wanted by Spirit Hall 29 30 42.

He concealed Ah Yin’s surviving Blue Silver Grass form in a dark cave behind a waterfall near Holy Soul Village. When Lin Chuan eventually found her, her remnant soul wondered whether Tang Hao had finally returned after six years and why he had planted her somewhere without sunlight 36.

Secret Protector at Nuoding Academy

Tang Hao secretly watched Tang San at Nuoding Academy. Although furious at Lin Chuan’s assault on his son, he postponed retaliation to avoid attracting Spirit Hall. His preferred outcome was to subdue Lin Chuan and make him Tang San’s obedient bodyguard 11.

After witnessing Yu Xiaogang’s inability to answer Lin Chuan’s criticism, Tang Hao regretted allowing Tang San to become his disciple. Nevertheless, he retained Yu Xiaogang’s services, ordering him to oversee Tang San’s cultivation and help Tang San earn Xiao Wu’s trust after discovering her Soul Beast identity 16 17 24.

Tang San’s nightmares about stealing Tang Sect manuals then raised Tang Hao’s suspicion that his real child had died and been replaced by a wandering soul. He chose not to investigate further because the person occupying Tang San’s body could still serve his campaign against Spirit Hall 25.

Confrontation, Captivity, and Death

Tang Hao summoned Lin Chuan to a grove intending to punish and subjugate him. Lin Chuan instead taunted him about his exile and exposed his scheme against Ah Yin. Fearing the destruction of his reputation, Tang Hao attempted to kill him, only for Zhang Lexuan to intervene 29 30.

Zhang Lexuan trapped him in her domain, draining his Soul Power and blocking his Martial Soul, rings, and skills. Lin Chuan offered survival in exchange for an arm and a leg. Tang Hao hacked off his right leg with a rusty blade and tore off his left arm, but Zhang Lexuan refused to release him 31 32.

Under renewed threat of death, Tang Hao confessed how he had manipulated Ah Yin. Lin Chuan secretly recorded the confession and left Zhang Lexuan to handle him. After rejecting Tang Hao’s argument that anyone would covet such a Soul Ring, she sealed his mouth and detonated her domain, killing him 32 33 34.

Posthumous Exposure

Zhang Lexuan recovered Tang Hao’s remaining Soul Bones and delivered them to Lin Chuan. She also distributed Image-Recording Stones containing his confession across the continent; by Chapter 42, she expected the news to spread within three days 35 42.

Lin Chuan showed the recording to Ah Yin, destroying her trust in Tang Hao. After recovering her human form, she demanded the opportunity to kill him herself, only to learn that he was already dead 37 38.

Yu Xiaogang remained unaware of his death during the Soul Hunting Forest expedition. He repeatedly relied on the belief that Tang Hao was secretly protecting him and Tang San, waiting for a rescue that could no longer come 44 45 46.

Relationships

  • Ah Yin — Wife and mother of his child. Their marriage concealed his plan to obtain her Soul Ring; learning the truth turned her devotion into hatred 33 37 38.
  • Tang San — Son and intended instrument of revenge against Spirit Hall. Tang Hao remained willing to support him even after suspecting that an outsider occupied his body 23 25.
  • Yu Xiaogang — Tang San’s teacher and Tang Hao’s subordinate. Tang Hao’s threats and humiliation provoked secret vows of revenge 23 24.
  • Xiao Wu — Target of a trust-building scheme intended to benefit Tang San after Tang Hao discovered her Soul Beast identity 17 19 24.
  • Lin Chuan — Enemy whom Tang Hao initially intended to enslave as Tang San’s protector. Lin Chuan exposed his secrets and recorded his confession 11 24 30 32 33.
  • Zhang Lexuan — Lin Chuan’s protector and Tang Hao’s killer 29 30 34.
  • Unnamed grandfather — A Peerless Douluo whom Tang Hao hoped to find for support and eventual revenge if he escaped captivity 30 32.
