Appearance
Inanna has waist-length silver-white hair and red eyes, often accompanied by a faint, appraising smile 4 11.
- Clothing: Fitted black dresses, a long dark gray trench coat, and high heels 4 7 11.
- Usual accessory: A slender riding crop, carried during training and disciplinary encounters 4 7.
- Scar: Daffodil’s attack leaves a pale white scar beneath her left ribs, normally concealed by her coat 15.
- After the time skip: Her face appears slightly thinner to Jin’en, while her hair and eyes remain familiar 11.
Personality
Inanna treats recruitment and upbringing as the cultivation of useful assets. She calls Red Letter’s children flowers in her “Garden” and describes recruiting Jin’en as picking up a blade rather than rescuing him. Her discipline is deliberately painful: she considers pain a means of making children remember and change, and she demands continued training despite injury or fear 1 4 7 14.
Her private behavior complicates that instrumental outlook. Jin’en witnesses her gently holding the sleeping Daffodil and Broken Rainbow, stroking their hair and soothing Broken Rainbow’s troubled expression. He cannot reconcile that tenderness with his belief that she sees them only as tools 10.
Inanna also expects loyalty and resents being excluded from decisions. Her objections to Jin’en increasingly concern not merely disobedience, but whether he trusts or protects her as he does the other children. Nevertheless, she permits him to continue his independent investigation of Prism and later provides space for him to train the second ability he concealed from her 43 49.
Abilities & Skills
Spatial Assessment and Stabilization
Inanna can recognize dangerous spatial instability and initially stops Jin’en’s expanding wrist crack with a gentle touch 1.
- Assesses the surrounding space as having fallen to 47 percent structural integrity within roughly sixty centimeters during his loss of control 1.
- Warns that his deteriorating crack could become uncontrollable within three months 1.
- Identifies his ability as Space Manipulation and explains its operations as folding, tearing, and stitching 4 5.
- Later notices an unusual fluctuation in his movements that prompts her to question what he has done 30.
- The mechanism behind her stabilization and assessment is not named in these encounters 1 30.
Authority over Anywhere Door
Inanna states that Porsette’s Anywhere Door operates within rules constrained by her, including a permitted maximum teleportation radius 24 26.
- For Porsette’s first mission, she defines the allowed range as sufficient to reach Victor Lance’s building 24.
- Later specifies a maximum reach from the mansion to New Hethereau District 26.
- Accounts for Porsette’s separate limitations: she must have seen a destination, and combat exhaustion can prevent a second teleport 24 26.
- The nature of Inanna’s control over these restrictions is not explained 24 26.
Training and Ability Analysis
Inanna designs training around precision, emotional control, and the practical limits of each child’s power 4 11 26.
- Detects a four-millimeter deviation in Daffodil’s seventy-third cut and orders additional repetitions 4.
- Explains that Jin’en’s fear accelerates spatial collapse, making control—not merely force—the purpose of his training 4.
- Initially uses Jin’en as a deterrent rather than an active combatant because his rifts endanger everyone nearby 11 14.
- Pairs Porsette’s teleportation with Broken Rainbow’s illusions and combat ability, assigning Jin’en emergency extraction duties 26.
Operational Planning
Inanna coordinates assassinations, intelligence networks, anomaly-item retrievals, and counterintelligence operations 14 21 24 43.
- Maintains mission files covering targets, guards, ability users, contacts, and intelligence routes 14 21.
- Plans around sensory abilities by having Broken Rainbow disrupt perception before Jin’en attacks 21.
- Anticipates Daffodil’s assassination attempt closely enough to place a protective anomaly item beneath the intended point of impact 13 14.
- Recognizes how Prism’s retreating network increases the value of Porsette’s saved coordinates 43.
Equipment & Items
- Riding crop / teaching pointer — Used to direct training, emphasize instructions, and administer punishment 4 7 21.
- Heart-protecting mirror — A palm-sized, engraved metal anomaly item concealed against her left ribs. It absorbs most of Daffodil’s stabbing impact but does not prevent heavy bleeding or unconsciousness 13.
- Dagger — A short blade with a black sheath, formerly worn at her waist and later given to Jin’en after she observes his fishing-rod training 11.
- Anomaly space anchoring diagram — Purchased at the White Whale Auction House for 500,000 fons 12.
- Devouring Pattern ring mold — A velvet-lined metal case with a precisely shaped recess, used to verify the ring retrieved from Victor Lance’s collection 25 26.
History
Daffodil’s Adoption and Upbringing
Inanna arranged the deaths of Daffodil’s parents to obtain a child with deep hatred and sufficient obedience. She deliberately showed the seven-year-old images of their deaths through a kaleidoscope, believing that a cold child would be useful. After bringing her to Red Letter, she named her Daffodil and trained her for more than a decade 13 14.
Daffodil’s injured wrist is initially described to Jin’en as damage caused by blade recoil. Daffodil later reveals that Inanna struck her wrist bones with the back of a blade as punishment for sparing a target. Despite a forty-degree fever that night, Inanna left the blade beside her bed and ordered training to continue the next day 4 13.
Recruiting Jin’en
Inanna finds the starving Jin’en in an abandoned apartment after he flees his orphanage, fearing his unstable wrist crack will hurt someone. She stabilizes the crack, explains its danger, and offers him a place at Red Letter where he can learn control. She openly denies acting out of charity 1.
At the mansion, she provides a room and necessities but warns him not to damage the building. His training begins with controlling his spatial instability, while her treatment of Daffodil and Broken Rainbow exposes him to the household’s harsh discipline 2 4 7.
The Auction and Assassination Attempt
Ten years later, Inanna takes Jin’en and Daffodil to the White Whale Auction House in Miguel District. She orders Jin’en to remain visible without acting and purchases an anomaly space anchoring diagram. Daffodil explains that the visit also tests his ability to sit still despite resonance between his power and the auctioned items 11 12.
Afterward, Daffodil confronts Inanna about her adoption and abuse, then stabs her beneath the left ribs. Inanna survives through a concealed protective anomaly item, though she is left unconscious and bleeding. Jin’en concludes that she anticipated both the attack and its location; Inanna does not deny this when confronted 13 14.
Jin’en helps Daffodil leave and promises that Red Letter will not pursue her. Inanna subsequently accepts his request to inherit Daffodil’s assassination assignments and intelligence networks, while warning that his spatial rifts lack her precision 14.
Bringing Porsette into Red Letter
Inanna introduces Porsette as a new addition to Red Letter’s Garden and places her into training. She later assigns the eight-year-old her first official mission: stealing the Devouring Pattern ring, with Jin’en supervising and Broken Rainbow covering the perimeter 15 19 24.
After the successful retrieval, Inanna makes Broken Rainbow Porsette’s trainer and mission partner. Jin’en becomes their backup, required to intervene when Broken Rainbow calls for retreat. To expand Porsette’s usable destinations, Inanna also funds a tour of Hethereau during which she can memorize teleportation coordinates 26 27.
Prism and Jin’en’s Independence
When someone probes for Porsette’s coordinates, Inanna orders Jin’en to eliminate the broker Zhou within three days. She notices irregularities surrounding Jin’en’s newly awakened dark ability, which he has chosen not to disclose 30.
As his investigation reaches Old Zheng and Prism, she confronts him over acting without consulting her and withholding recovered negatives. She ultimately lets him keep the evidence as bait, while warning that his calculations repeatedly depend on others absorbing the risk. Their confrontation ends with an arrangement for Porsette and Broken Rainbow to leave the estate while Jin’en remains behind 43.
After Jin’en dismantles Prism’s Miguel District network, Inanna challenges him over concealing his second ability and asks whether he protects her as faithfully as he protects the girls. She nevertheless clears land on the back hill for separate dark-attribute training. Her remark that he can answer once he is no longer part of Red Letter is interpreted by Broken Rainbow as telling him to leave 49.
When Prism subsequently offers Jin’en a possible place outside Red Letter, he reports the approach to Inanna. She asks how he answered and what he thinks of the offer 50.
Relationships
- Jin’en — Adopted recruit and trainee. Inanna initially keeps him as Red Letter’s hidden deterrent, then permits him to assume Daffodil’s work. His growing independence makes his loyalty a recurring point of conflict 1 11 14 43 49.
- Daffodil — Adopted daughter and prized assassin, described as the first bloom of Inanna’s first batch of flowers. Their relationship is founded on engineered bereavement and abuse, culminating in Daffodil stabbing her and leaving Red Letter 13 14.
- Broken Rainbow — Adopted daughter and operative. Inanna punishes her physically for neglecting training, but also comforts her in private. Broken Rainbow says Inanna does not hit her when Daffodil is present 7 10.
- Porsette — Young recruit whose teleportation range Inanna constrains. Inanna arranges her missions, partnership, training, and coordinate-gathering trips 15 24 26 27.
- Unica — Trusted household intermediary who delivers documents, files, and summons on Inanna’s behalf 14 15 43 49.
