Background / History
Life in Red Letter
Inanna brought Daffodil to Red Letter at seven and gave her her name. On her first night, she neither cried nor spoke, instead entering her assigned room and neatly arranging the bedsheets. The next morning, Inanna found her waiting on the training ground with a blade she did not yet know how to hold 14.
Daffodil later told Jin'en that, according to Inanna, she began blade practice the day after arriving; she could not remember what happened before then. Her training included an injury that fractured three bones in her left wrist. Inanna ordered that the injury heal without treatment and that training resume afterward 4 5.
Over more than a decade, Daffodil became one of Red Letter’s “twin blades,” specializing in assassination while Broken Rainbow sowed confusion. Her work also built intelligence nodes, contacts, coded communications, and assignment routes 14.
Training Jin'en
Daffodil recognized the spatial fissure concealed beneath Jin'en’s sleeve and later showed him a finer crack on her own left hand. After watching his unstable power while he slept, she cleared others from the training ground and offered to practice alongside him 2 4.
Their first sessions exposed the danger of repeatedly forcing his rifts shut. Daffodil observed that they stabilized during sleep but expanded when he panicked. She persuaded him to stop suppressing them through force, explaining that his real task was controlling fear rather than simply closing a tear in space 5 6.
Their companionship gradually became familial. When Jin'en asked whether she wanted to stop training, Daffodil admitted she did not know. Later in the same conversation, she awkwardly called him “Bro” and relaxed when he accepted the address 6.
Breaking with Inanna
Daffodil accompanied Jin'en to the White Whale Auction House, where they watched Inanna acquire an anomaly space anchoring diagram. She explained afterward that the assignment had also been arranged to test Jin'en’s restraint when auction items resonated with his spatial ability 11 12.
That night, she confronted Inanna about her parents’ deaths and the abuse she had suffered, then stabbed her. A concealed heart-protecting mirror absorbed most of the impact. Daffodil knew from the moment her blade struck that Inanna had survived 13.
Jin'en followed her into the garden, gave her his savings, and urged her to leave for the Bridge District before dawn. Before departing, she pressed herself against him and said that, despite hating Red Letter, Inanna, and the Garden, she accepted him. Jin'en subsequently secured Inanna’s agreement to take over her assignments and intelligence networks after promising Daffodil that Red Letter would not pursue her 13 14.
Bridge District and Prism
After leaving, Daffodil lived in a Bridge District bungalow and investigated faint spatial distortions around Halfwidth Street, following an inconclusive Administration Bureau investigation. She also helped Jin'en test his newly awakened dark ability 29 30.
Her work intersected with the investigation into Prism. She identified a changed collection route, entered a warehouse while Jin'en and Porsette provided outside support, and subdued an operative inside 33.
When Prism confirmed her bungalow’s location, Daffodil recognized surveillance disguised as a cigarette seller and a misplaced cobbler’s stall. She initially left the watchers undisturbed to avoid alerting them, then cleared out the bungalow and moved to temporary accommodation near the docks. She maintained contact through an old cobbler on Halfwidth Street 37.
She continued tracing Prism’s logistics, locating a truck near an eastern secondhand market and identifying boat zero-seven’s usual destination as berth three of the old port. Jin'en later asked for word to be sent to her to watch the Unheard-of Bay docks for the boat holding Wastebasket 39 45 50.
Appearance
- Hair: Blue-streaked hair, with bangs usually covering her right eye; later appears with a carefully tied ponytail 5 11.
- Eyes: Gray. She began wearing an eye patch after seeing unfamiliar reflections in her pupils and finding her unrestricted perception uncomfortable 2.
- Clothing: Usually fitted black clothing and gloves. During surveillance work, she changes into a dark gray jacket and baseball cap 4 10 33.
- Left hand: Bears a pale scar extending from the wrist bone toward the web between thumb and forefinger; earlier appearances show thick bandaging beneath a black fingerless glove 4 5.
- Movement: Walks with unusually quiet, measured steps, habitually placing each foot precisely along the middle of her path 2 6 8.
Personality
Daffodil is restrained, blunt, and sparing with words. Her expression remains almost unchanged whether she is eating breakfast or performing rapid blade drills. She admits she is not good at lying, immediately revealing that Broken Rainbow supplied chocolate despite being asked to conceal its source 2 4 5.
Her care is usually practical rather than verbal: she brings Jin'en food and water, slows her pace when he is exhausted, and ends training when further practice would be unsafe. She also treats Broken Rainbow’s wounds with practiced hands, although her anger is visible only in a small movement of her finger against her knee 5 6 7.
Her discipline is bound up with fear of Inanna’s displeasure. She says she fears her blade stopping and cannot initially answer whether she wants to stop training. After leaving Red Letter, she becomes even less willing to explain herself or allow others to follow her, while still accepting Jin'en and helping his companions 6 14 33.
Abilities & Skills
Thousand Blades, Thousand Eyes
Inanna identifies Daffodil’s ability as Thousand Blades, Thousand Eyes, emphasizing its precision and controllability 14.
- Can cut both anomalies and people; unlike Jin'en’s spatial rifts, her blade can be restrained rather than indiscriminately damaging everything nearby 14.
- Channels dark-attributed spiritual power along her blade’s edge, demonstrated during her sparring test with Jin'en’s black rod 30.
- Her left hand developed a fine crack after a blade strike swallowed a wooden post. Inanna described it as temporary residue from spatial interference, not as Jin'en’s persistent condition 2 4.
Extraordinary Perception
Daffodil sees details that ordinary observation does not reveal 2.
- Detects Jin'en’s wrist fissure beneath his sleeve 2.
- Without her eye patch, perceives cracks in walls, shifts in the air, and colors on people 2.
- Experiences unfamiliar reflections appearing in her gray pupils; wearing an eye patch makes her perception more comfortable 2.
Blade Combat and Footwork
Her technique is built around daily repetition with both hands 4.
- Practices slashes, thrusts, blocks, and moving slashes before repeating the sequence with the other hand 4.
- Delivers rapid, nearly silent attacks and repeatedly strikes almost the same point on a reinforced training post 4 5.
- Maintains quiet footwork and moves quickly enough to disappear around corridor corners before Jin'en can follow 7 8.
- Reportedly broke one of Broken Rainbow’s illusions with a single slash. This is a demonstrated escape, not proof of universal illusion immunity 9.
Observation and Ability Analysis
Daffodil identifies patterns through sustained observation and practical tests 6 30.
- Determines that fear and forced suppression worsen Jin'en’s spatial instability 6.
- Recognizes that his black rod absorbs spiritual power, then proposes testing it against a wall to establish its devouring effect 30.
- Explains that combining the rod with Porsette’s teleportation improves their offense without solving Porsette’s defensive vulnerability 30.
Intelligence Work and First Aid
- Knows mission locations, entrances, and other operational details before departure; maintains contacts and coded intelligence routes 11 14.
- Detects surveillance, follows cargo movements, and identifies delivery schedules without immediately alerting the opposition 37 39.
- Redresses Broken Rainbow’s whip wounds with more practiced technique and better bandage tension than Jin'en 7.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Blade — Initially described as dark silver, roughly half her height, with black cloth around the hilt and a short dangling chain. Usually carried behind her waist; later passages describe her weapon as a short blade 4 29.
- Eye patch — Adopted first during training and then more regularly to make her excessive visual perception easier to tolerate 2.
- Black fingerless gloves and bandages — Cover her hands, including the injured left wrist 4.
- Cloth supply bag — Carries a water flask, compressed biscuits, and practice materials for training sessions 5 6 7.
Relationships
- Jin'en — Training partner and acknowledged elder brother. He helps her escape Red Letter, assumes her former responsibilities, and remains her ally afterward 6 13 14 33.
- Broken Rainbow — Calls Daffodil her big sister and frequently clings to her. Daffodil treats her injuries; Broken Rainbow regards her soul as a white flame that shines without burning 2 7 14.
- Inanna — Adoptive mother, trainer, and former superior. Her relationship with Daffodil includes severe discipline and moments of tenderness. Daffodil eventually stabs her and leaves the organization 4 10 13 14.
- Porsette — Younger sister figure and investigative ally. Porsette urges Jin'en to seek Daffodil’s help with his new power and asks Daffodil to share her whereabouts so she can teleport to her in an emergency 31 37.
- Prism — Hostile surveillance organization that confirms her bungalow’s location and gathers photographs and negatives of her. Daffodil helps investigate its collection routes and shipping network 33 37 42 45.

Trivia
- She rises at 3:30 a.m. and practices in the garden from 4:00 to 6:00 a.m. because nobody else occupies it then 5.
- Despite her orderly eating habits, she picks all the greens out of her meal and leaves them uneaten 8.
- Broken Rainbow sees Daffodil’s soul brighten when she leans into Jin'en before leaving. She also says she cannot identify Daffodil’s fear through the Eye of Bewilderment and has never dared use that eye on her 14.
- An author’s note explicitly identifies Daffodil and Broken Rainbow as female leads 6.
