Background / History

Red Mountain Academy and Forging Apprenticeship

Tang Wulin first appears alongside Tang Ziran at the awakening ceremony. His presence immediately attracts Lu Chen, who feels an inexplicable urge to consume him. After awakening Blue Silver Grass, Tang Wulin faces ridicule from classmates despite possessing innate Soul Power 1 3.

Lu Chen publicly defends him, arguing that awakening rank-three Soul Power with Blue Silver Grass suggests that the Martial Soul is unusual. Tang Wulin does not know that Lu Chen is also absorbing the blood essence he unintentionally releases 3.

Coming from a family with limited money, Tang Wulin learns forging as a second profession under Mang Tian. He and Lu Chen each complete an initial thousand-strike test, prompting Mang Tian to recognize their exceptional natural strength. During the additional endurance test, Tang Wulin begins faltering after another 150 blows, but earns a place in daily forging lessons 6.

His persistence and strength control impress Mang Tian. He later celebrates saving thirty thousand by embracing Mang Tian, Lu Chen, and even a passing workshop worker 13 14.

Enrollment at Eastsea Academy

Tang Wulin travels to Eastsea City with Lu Chen. They seek inexpensive, filling meals, meet Xie Xie, and spend a night at Cen Yue’s home before enrolling. At the academy, Tang Wulin takes the upper bunk above Lu Chen in Room 206, sharing the dormitory with Wang Hu and eventually Xie Xie 15 16 17 18.

He joins Wu Zhangkong’s Class Five and again encounters mockery over Blue Silver Grass. Wu Zhangkong and Lu Chen immediately silence the offending student 21.

Tang Wulin also continues forging through the Blacksmith’s Association and becomes Mu Chen’s disciple. Although Mu Chen values him, Lu Chen’s greater talent draws more attention and resources; the narration describes Mu Chen’s expectations for Tang Wulin as following his path to becoming a Saint Blacksmith 19 36 37.

Class Promotion Tournament

Wu Zhangkong initially selects Tang Wulin as a substitute because the team lacks a better candidate. Gu Yue’s arrival places his position in doubt, although she refuses to take his place. Wu Zhangkong later assigns him to gain experience in early matches while reserving Lu Chen, Gu Yue, and Xie Xie for stronger opponents 33 39.

Tang Wulin struggles with being overshadowed. After the victory over Class Four, he feels that Lu Chen has taken the teachers’ attention, his classmates’ interest, and the glory that should have belonged to him. Lu Chen’s invitation to celebrate briefly relieves his isolation 40.

He has no opportunity to act against Class Three because Lu Chen and Gu Yue finish the battle themselves. When Wu Zhangkong bars Lu Chen from the Class Two match, Tang Wulin finally fights alongside Xie Xie and Gu Yue; the three defeat four opponents in ten minutes 46 50.

Bloodline Predation and Decline

Lu Chen initially benefits from Golden Dragon King energy leaking out of Tang Wulin during cultivation. Tang Wulin cannot fully control the bloodline, allowing substantially more energy to escape than Gu Yue releases from her own bloodline 3 34.

Nidhogg later escalates from absorbing escaped energy to actively consuming Tang Wulin’s bloodline. When Old Tang investigates, Nidhogg drags his divine consciousness into Lu Chen’s mental domain, drains more than half its source, and severs its connection to Tang Wulin. Old Tang is thrown back into the Golden Dragon King Seal, unable to guide or protect him 37.

Tang Wulin’s extraordinary strength subsequently weakens, and his appetite falls to less than half its usual size. Wu Zhangkong notices the strength loss but dismisses the possibility that Lu Chen could devour bloodline power 39 41.

Without either boy’s knowledge, Nidhogg then devours the first seal’s Sea God divine power and Golden Dragon King bloodline power. Although this deprives Tang Wulin of that power, it also prevents a lethal overload: the energy beneath the seal was approaching the limit his body could withstand 49.

By his next forging attempt, previously manageable hammers feel unbearably heavy. His weakened strength causes basic mistakes and a failed Thousand Refinements attempt, which Cen Yue mistakes for an attempt to advance before mastering the fundamentals 50.

Appearance

  • His looks distinguish him from the other children at the awakening ceremony 1.
  • When embarrassed or uncertain, he frequently scratches the back of his head; during his Class Five introduction, he also picks at the hem of his clothes 6 17 21.

Personality

Tang Wulin is initially shy and sensitive to judgments about his Martial Soul. He longs for cultivation companions but lacks the confidence to approach other children. He is also considerate: seeing students arrive at Eastsea Academy with their parents makes him homesick, but remembering Lu Chen’s orphanhood helps him appreciate having a home of his own 3 17.

He is tenacious in forging, openly affectionate when happy, and described by Xie Xie as loyal. Nevertheless, repeated comparisons with Lu Chen leave him feeling inadequate and excluded. His frustration does not erase his desire to improve: after hearing about military service, he firmly declares that he is unafraid of its hardships and wants to become stronger 13 14 28 40 44.

Abilities & Skills

Blue Silver Grass

Tang Wulin’s Martial Soul can produce grass for restraint 34.

  • Attempts to bind Wu Zhangkong’s ankles during a coordinated attack with Xie Xie and Gu Yue 34.
  • Wu Zhangkong easily severs the grass with his wooden sword 34.
  • Lu Chen suggests a possible Blue Silver King bloodline when defending him, but this is not established as an awakened ability 3.

Golden Dragon King Bloodline

A powerful draconic bloodline resides within Tang Wulin, with its power held behind seals 34 49.

  • Releases energy that nourishes Lu Chen’s bloodline and accelerates his cultivation 3 5 34.
  • Remains incompletely controlled, allowing substantial power to leak out 34.
  • Contains enough power beneath the first seal to threaten Tang Wulin’s life if his body cannot withstand it 49.
  • Is vulnerable to Nidhogg’s devouring ability, including direct consumption of sealed power 37 49.

Natural Strength

Mang Tian identifies Tang Wulin as possessing innate divine strength suited to forging 6.

  • Completes the initial thousand-strike apprenticeship test 6.
  • Displays enough physical power for Wu Zhangkong to excuse him from physical conditioning and prioritize Soul Power cultivation instead 34.
  • Defeats Yun Xiao in only a few moves during class sparring 24.
  • Loses strength as Nidhogg feeds on his bloodline, eventually struggling to lift his forging hammers 39 50.

Forging

Tang Wulin trains under Mang Tian and later becomes Mu Chen’s disciple 6 36.

  • Earns praise for tenacity and strength control beyond that of his peers 13.
  • Takes a blacksmith assessment alongside Lu Chen at the Blacksmith’s Association 19.
  • Attempts Thousand Refinements, but fails after his physical strength deteriorates 50.

Relationships

  • Lu Chen — Childhood classmate, fellow forging apprentice, roommate, and teammate. Tang Wulin gratefully accepts his support, unaware that Lu Chen regards him primarily as a cultivation accelerator and that Nidhogg is consuming his bloodline 3 6 17 20 28 49.
  • Tang Ziran — Accompanies him to the awakening ceremony and collects him after forging lessons 1 6.
  • Lin Mengxi — His Red Mountain Academy teacher; teaches Soul Master fundamentals and forbids classmates from mocking him 3.
  • Mang Tian — His first forging teacher, who recognizes his natural strength and arranges daily instruction 6.
  • Mu Chen — His later forging master, who hopes he can become a Saint Blacksmith 36.
  • Cen Yue — Oversees his forging assessment and shelters him upon arrival in Eastsea City. Later misunderstands his failed Thousand Refinements attempt as impatience 16 19 50.
  • Wu Zhangkong — His homeroom teacher and combat instructor; recognizes his physical strength but questions his tournament suitability and cannot explain its subsequent decline 33 34 39.
  • Xie Xie — Roommate, sparring rival, and teammate. Calls him loyal but initially doubts whether his rank-eleven cultivation is sufficient for the tournament 18 25 28.
  • Gu Yue — Classmate and teammate who refuses to replace him in the tournament lineup 33 34 50.
  • Old Tang — Tang San’s divine consciousness within him. Attempts to investigate Nidhogg’s predation but is severely weakened and imprisoned inside the Golden Dragon King Seal 37 49.
  • Nidhogg — Secretly consumes his bloodline and treats him as prey to be cultivated over time. Its theft of the first seal’s power also inadvertently saves his life 37 49.
