Tang San came from Holy Soul Village, where Su Yuntao awakened his Blue Silver Grass Martial Soul and identified his innate full Soul Power. Chen An underwent awakening there as well, possessing Lone Bamboo and the same exceptional starting talent. Yu Xiaogang knew Tang San also possessed the Clear Sky Hammer and initially prioritized nurturing him over Chen An 1 5.

At Nuoding Junior Soul Master Academy, Tang San lived among the working students in Dorm Seven. He and Xiao Wu both defeated Chen An during the dormitory’s contests to establish its leader. During his subsequent schooling, Tang San attended classes and earned money through part-time forging 3 7.

Personality

Tang San shows strong loyalty to Yu Xiaogang. He abandoned his escape from the Mandala Snake to return for his teacher, removed the poison after the battle, and offered to care for him during his recovery. He also willingly risked absorbing a beast-type ring into a plant Martial Soul to put Yu Xiaogang’s theory into practice 1 2 3.

His response to Chen An’s early growth was determination rather than envy. However, he remained protective of his own secrets: when Chen An emphasized that everyone had information they should keep private, Tang San stopped pressing him for an explanation 3 9.

Confidence sometimes leads him to take unnecessary risks. Certain he could defeat Meng Yiran, he accepted severe penalties and voluntarily blindfolded himself for their throwing contest. After losing, he requested a rematch but ultimately honored the wager by kneeling and kowtowing 21.

His concern for Xiao Wu persists despite knowing she does not return his feelings. He pursued the Titan Giant Ape after it took her, arguing that an unfavorable difference in strength was not reason enough to avoid trying 19 20.

Tang San uses several Tang Sect techniques alongside his Martial Souls.

• Yu Xiaogang / Grandmaster — Teacher and trusted mentor. Tang San risks himself to protect him and continues to trust his guidance when traveling to Shrek. Yu Xiaogang later bets on Tang San against Chen An and reacts angrily to his defeat 1 2 10 27.
• Chen An — Fellow villager, schoolmate, and eventual rival. Tang San initially believes Chen An sacrificed his first-ring quality to save him and Yu Xiaogang. Unbeknownst to him, Chen An seeks his Tang Sect knowledge and later sabotages him over his continuing attachment to Xiao Wu 1 8 19 21.
• Xiao Wu — Classmate, unrequited love interest, and partner in the Three-Five Combination. They initially share a bed, but she later refuses to continue. Despite their distance, they compete together in the Soul Fighting Arena 3 4 20 27.
• Meng Yiran — Rival in the dispute over a Man Faced Demon Spider. She criticizes his attempts to win Xiao Wu’s affection and defeats him in a throwing contest with Chen An’s covert assistance 20 21.
• Zhao Wuji — Shrek teacher who searches for him after his solo pursuit of the Titan Giant Ape, shields him from the Peerless Dragon Snake, and tries to negotiate away his humiliating punishment 19 20 21.
• Flender — Shrek’s dean. Helps negotiate the spider dispute, offers to pay Tang San’s ten-thousand-coin penalty, and later bets on Chen An rather than Tang San in their arena match 21 27.
• Ma Xiunuo — Spirit Hall examiner who confirms his level-thirteen Soul Power and registers him as a Soul Master eligible for the state’s monthly subsidy 5 6.

Story Role / Major Arcs

First Soul Ring and Spirit Hall Registration

During the first ring hunt, Tang San returned to rescue Yu Xiaogang from the Mandala Snake. He wounded the snake before Chen An delivered the finishing blow, then credited Chen An with killing it. Believing Chen An had hastily absorbed a ten-year ring to help them, Tang San thanked him with a bow 1 2.

He subsequently absorbed the snake’s ring with Yu Xiaogang’s encouragement. At Spirit Hall, Ma Xiunuo confirmed his level-thirteen Soul Power and registered him for the monthly Soul Master subsidy; this registration did not make him a Spirit Hall member 2 5 6.

Journey to Shrek

After six years at Nuoding, Tang San traveled to Suotuo City with Chen An and Xiao Wu. Chen An believed Tang San had stopped competing for Xiao Wu’s affection, though later events showed that his feelings remained 8 19 20.

Tang San identified the rare stone in the city’s shop and attempted to arrange their hotel rooms. When Dai Mubai disputed their claim to a room, Tang San was willing to fight, but Chen An became Dai Mubai’s opponent instead. Tang San later displayed his two yellow rings during Shrek’s entrance screening 8 10.

Titan Giant Ape and the Spider Dispute

After the Titan Giant Ape took Xiao Wu, Tang San left the group to pursue it. Along the way, he killed a wounded thousand-year Man Faced Demon Spider using his hammer and crossbow. The Peerless Dragon Snake and Meng Yiran then arrived, claiming the beast as their earlier quarry 19 20.

Tang San rejected Meng Shu’s offer to join their family in exchange for the spider. With Zhao Wuji and Flender intervening, the dispute became a throwing contest against Meng Yiran. Tang San lost after Chen An secretly assisted her, leaving all sixteen of his blades without a single leaf. He knelt and kowtowed under the wager’s terms; Flender offered to cover the ten-thousand-Gold-Soul-Coin penalty 20 21.

Tang San later encountered another, younger Man Faced Demon Spider and began absorbing its ring after reaching level thirty 24.

Three-Five Combination’s Defeat

Tang San and Xiao Wu entered a two-person arena match against Chen An and Ning Rongrong. Their plan was to remove Ning Rongrong first: Tang San occupied Chen An with control skills while Xiao Wu advanced on the support Soul Master 27.

Chen An instead directed an Ultimate Ice attack at Tang San. Neither his movement technique nor his layered Blue Silver Grass defenses stopped it, and Mysterious Jade Hand failed to withstand the impact. Tang San was blasted out of the arena, pale and shaking with cold. Chen An subsequently intercepted and defeated Xiao Wu as well 27.
