Background / History

Phoenix-tail Crested Serpent Dispute

Meng Yiran accompanied Chao Tianxiang into the Star Dou Great Forest to obtain a Soul Ring. Their dispute with Shrek Academy over a Phoenix-tail Crested Serpent led to a contest between Meng Yiran and Chen An. If she won, Shrek's side would surrender the serpent and provide a kowtow and apology; if Chen An won, her side would perform one task for him 18.

Meng Yiran initially evaded Chen An's attack and countered with Snake Blade. His subsequent Ultimate Ice sword strike left her unable to move and threatened to kill her. Realizing he had failed to hold back, Chen An teleported in front of her and countered his own strike with Flame Slash. The resulting shock wave threw them both backward 18.

The Titan Giant Ape's arrival interrupted the encounter. Meng Yiran angrily rejected Chen An's lewd remarks after he landed on top of her, and Chao Tianxiang took her away when the ape returned for Xiao Wu 19.

Contest with Tang San

Meng Yiran later found Tang San beside the dead Man Faced Demon Spider that her family had previously wounded. Unwilling to relinquish another Soul Beast after losing the Phoenix-tail Crested Serpent, she supported her grandparents' demand that Tang San surrender it 20.

Flender negotiated a contest to settle the dispute. Using a format Meng Yiran said she had devised, each contestant threw sixteen Soul-Breaking Blades at falling leaves. Every one of her blades pierced leaves, while Tang San's caught none. She insisted that he honor the wager, and he knelt and kowtowed despite his teachers' attempts to negotiate an alternative 21.

Chen An later revealed that he had secretly interfered with the contest through a cold gust. Meng Yiran's victory was therefore assisted rather than an unaided defeat of Tang San 23.

Third Ring and Reconciliation

After the contest, Chen An invoked their earlier wager and pressured Meng Yiran into performing a song and dance. Although she resented his demand, she complied rather than be accused of breaking her word 22.

Her subsequent attempt to absorb the Man Faced Demon Spider's Soul Ring nearly killed her. Its poison and overwhelming Soul Power threatened to rupture her meridians, prompting Chen An to intervene with Lone Bamboo's Dendro Element. With her meridians protected and the toxins drawn out, she completed the absorption 22.

Meng Yiran's hostility softened into affection after the rescue. When Chen An admitted that liking her was one reason he had helped, she kissed his cheek in thanks; he responded by kissing her hand before leaving 23.

The spider's Eight Spider Lances did not become hers. Chen An later discovered the spider inside Lone Bamboo and acquired the External Soul Bone himself 24.

Personality

Meng Yiran is proud, quick-tempered, and outspoken. Oscar's disrespect toward her grandmother prompts her to reach for a blade, while Chen An's teasing repeatedly provokes angry threats. She also openly mocks Tang San's attempt to impress others by competing blindfolded 18 19 21.

Keeping one's word matters to her, though her pride can conflict with that principle. She demands that Tang San accept his loss, then reluctantly fulfills her own wager when Chen An turns the same argument against her 21 22.

Her gratitude toward Chen An does not erase her willingness to criticize him. Even after developing affection for him, she continues to object to his lewd comments and ostentatious behavior 23.

Abilities & Skills

Serpent Cane

Her Martial Soul supports both evasive movement and blade attacks 18.

• First Soul Skill — Snake Blade: Produces a sharp, slender blade from the Serpent Cane.
• Second Soul Skill — Serpent Body: Makes her movements smooth and snake-like, allowing her to evade Chen An's opening Piercing attack.
• Demonstrated limit: She cannot escape Chen An's subsequent Ultimate Ice sword strike without his intervention.

Blade Throwing

Meng Yiran is proficient with Soul-Breaking Blades and devised the falling-leaf contest used against Tang San 21.

• Leaves are pierced by every blade before the blades lodge in a tree trunk.
• The contest's result is affected by Chen An's concealed intervention 23.

Singing and Dancing

Meng Yiran performs a song and dance to fulfill Chen An's demand. Her dance features controlled turns, coordinated hand movements, and flowing footwork 22.

• Meng Shu / Dragon Duke — Grandfather and protector. He sets the contest against Tang San and recognizes the danger during her third-ring absorption. He is open to her developing relationship with Chen An but wants to assess whether Chen An can keep her from suffering 20 21 22 23.
• Chao Tianxiang / Snake Granny — Grandmother and protector. She negotiates Meng Yiran's contest with Chen An, removes her from the Titan Giant Ape's path, and later considers bringing the pair together 18 19 23.
• Chen An — Initially an antagonistic opponent whose teasing she resents; later her rescuer and romantic interest. He secretly assists her against Tang San and saves her during Soul Ring absorption. Their farewell includes her kissing his cheek and him kissing her hand, but no formal relationship is established 18 21 22 23.
• Tang San — Rival in the Man Faced Demon Spider dispute. She challenges his motives concerning Xiao Wu, mocks his blindfolded performance, and insists that he fulfill the penalty after losing their contest 20 21.
