The runes on the city wall lit one after another in the dusk, like an ignited fuse spreading westward from the battlements, vanishing behind the distant mountains.
Every few breaths, fresh mana flowed in from afar along the veins of the runes, coursing across the entire wall until it entered the city. It was reserve mana drawn from the three nearest cities.
Outside the city, a White Dragon was wreaking havoc.
Its scales gleamed with a cold silver-blue sheen beneath the moonlight, and its wingspan blotted out half the sky.
Most of the arrows and spells launched from inside the city were stopped by its hard scales. The few threatening attacks, such as explosive ballista bolts, were dodged with a beat of its wings.

With every impact, a section of runes on the wall went dark outright. The soldiers defending the city were shaken off balance, and some climbed up from the ground clutching their ears, blood streaming from their noses.
But every time, those darkened runes would light up again after a few breaths, as mana from the distance continued to surge in without end.
Relying on the sturdiness of the New Defense Line, the city finally held out until reinforcements arrived.
