| Occupation/Role | Devil Cultivator; talisman cultivator; direct disciple of the Profound Heaven Sect 5 7 13 |

| Status | Alive; trapped with his fellow disciples in the Spirit-Devouring Blood Formation at his latest documented appearance 22 |
Background
Chi Wang enters the Profound Heaven Sect while concealing his identity as a Devil Cultivator. His internal thoughts identify turning Jiang Yueyan toward the devil path as an objective for which he expects credit. He refuses to explain his mission even after accepting Tang Yao as a fellow Devil Cultivator and possible relative 5.
He has an unnamed eldest brother who chose his name before his birth: a boy would be called Chi Wang, while a girl would be called Chi Jiang. Believing Tang Yao might be his father's illegitimate daughter, he offers her the unused name 5.
Original Novel Timeline
In the novel Tang Yao remembers, Chi Wang becomes the Profound Heaven Sect's third disciple, behind Jiang Yueyan and Chu Song. He disappears alongside Jiang Yueyan after the latter becomes a Devil Cultivator. Tang Yao suspects Chi Wang helped bring about that fall; his remarks about Jiang Yueyan's impending “change” reinforce her suspicion 5 6.
Appearance
Chi Wang is a handsome, conspicuously pale youth whose outward gentleness can abruptly give way to hostility 5.
- Complexion: Described as bloodless or white-jade-like 5 13.
- Eyes: Turn purplish-red when his anger intensifies during the ambush in the Withered Wood Forest 12.
- Clothing: Wears purple Profound Heaven Sect robes, which soften his otherwise hostile appearance 15.
Personality
Chi Wang is proud of his talent and enjoys recognition, maintaining a contemptuous expression while visibly pleased by praise for his talisman technique. His cruelty is more explicit in the secret realm, where he torments weaker contestants and attempts to eliminate Chu Song as a future threat 6 9.
Despite his calculating intentions, he is repeatedly deceived by Tang Yao. Her ability to release Devil Qi makes her supposed family connection convincing to him, and appeals to cooperation between Devil Cultivators repeatedly defuse his anger. He develops genuine affection for his supposed sister, but explicitly places the Devil Realm above personal feelings 5 9.
His confidence in that allegiance is shaken when a Devil Race formation threatens his life without warning. Although he initially reacts with disbelief and anger, he subsequently thanks Jiang Yueyan for rescuing him and accepts help from his fellow disciples 21 22.
Abilities & Skills
Talisman Drawing with Intent
Chi Wang can draw talismans without a brush, using intent and a finger against the talisman paper 6 7.
- Produces a supreme-grade Flame Talisman, taking first place in the talisman-drawing trial 7.
- His result is the first supreme-grade talisman produced during the new-disciple trial in hundreds of years; Jiang Yueyan had achieved only high grade 7.
- Conceals the Devil Qi involved in his drawing so completely that the visible strokes resemble ordinary pale-blue spiritual power 6.
Devil Qi Transfer
Chi Wang injects Devil Qi through physical contact, first attempting this when he grips Tang Yao's wrist 5.
- Tang Yao explains that nearly undetectable Devil Qi can hinder cultivation or cause Qi Deviation when the recipient's Dao heart is unstable 6.
- He assesses Jiang He's unstable Dao heart as a possible opening for devil cultivation, but dismisses her as too weak to contribute much in battle 7.
- Tang Yao's Spirit Root absorbs and purifies his Devil Qi, preventing his initial attack from harming her 5.
- Vermilion Bird's Li Fire strongly suppresses his Devil Qi and forces him to submit during their confrontation 12.
Fire Talismans
Chi Wang uses talisman-generated flames for both restraint and defense 9 12.
- Surrounds a contestant with a ring of fire serpents while taking his identity token 9.
- Summons protective flames when ambushed; Vermilion Bird's Li Fire tears through them 12.
- Uses a Netherfire Talisman against a Spirit-Devouring Vine, but its flames only slow the strengthened vine rather than destroy it 21.
Demon Beast Manipulation
Chi Wang exploits the Demon Beasts' obedience to the Devil Race to direct the secret realm's beasts against Chu Song 9.
- Removes Chu Song's identity token so he cannot use it to escape the realm 9.
- Intends the beast horde to kill Chu Song before he becomes a greater threat 9.
- The beasts stop pursuing Chu Song once White Tiger conceals his presence, demonstrating a limit to their targeting 12.
Equipment / Items
- Suspected concealment Law Artifact — Tang Yao infers that he possesses a high-grade concealment artifact because no Devil Qi leaks out while he draws a talisman; its identity is not confirmed 6.
- Storage Bag — Taken by Tang Yao during the Withered Wood Forest ambush 12.
- Sect Jade Slip — Used to participate in the “Direct disciples who love one another” group chat 15.
Relationships
- Tang Yao / Tang Xiaocao — Mistakes her for his half-sister after she demonstrates Devil Qi and fabricates a family connection. Her protection of Chu Song eventually makes him feel betrayed; she forces him to stop targeting Chu Song by threatening him with Li Fire 5 9 12.
- Jiang Yueyan — Eldest senior brother and intended target of his infiltration. Chi Wang repeatedly seeks proximity to him, even choosing an unsuitable residence to live nearby. Jiang Yueyan later saves his life inside the blood formation 5 13 21.
- Chu Song / Chu Xiaohua — Rival whom he considers a dangerous future enemy. Their hostility includes attempted murder in the trial, retaliatory ambush, verbal sparring, and a nighttime duel that ends in a draw. Chu Song nevertheless supplies him with Explosion Talismans during the blood-formation crisis 9 12 15 21.
- Unnamed eldest brother — Chose Chi Wang's name. When the blood formation attacks indiscriminately, Chi Wang wonders whether this brother approved abandoning him 5 21.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Profound Heaven Sect Entrance Trials
Tang Yao identifies Chi Wang through her knowledge of the original novel and intervenes when he tries to influence Jiang Yueyan. After neutralizing his Devil Qi, she impersonates his half-sister to investigate his purpose in the sect 5.
| Trial | Result | Notable Events |
|---|---|---|
| Body-tempering trial | Second place | Receives full marks from Jiang Yueyan and is praised by the sect leadership for reaching the top 5 6. |
| Flame Talisman trial | First place | Draws a supreme-grade Flame Talisman entirely without using a brush 7. |
| Secret-realm trial | Among the final top three | Reaches 2,580 points before Tang Yao and Chu Song ambush and eliminate him 12 13. |
During the final trial, Chi Wang steals Chu Song's token while pretending to safeguard it. Tang Yao recovers it through deception, then rescues Chu Song from the beast horde. The pair later retaliate by ambushing Chi Wang in the Withered Wood Forest. Tang Yao compels him to stop targeting Chu Song and crushes his token, securing points that she agrees to share with Chu Song 8 9 12.
Despite his elimination, Chi Wang becomes one of the sect's three new direct disciples. He chooses the residence closest to Jiang Yueyan even though its surrounding cold pools are unfavorable for his Fire Spirit Root. Tang Yao settles nearby to monitor him and repeatedly blocks his attempts to approach Jiang Yueyan 13.
Training Journey to Myriad Ancient City
Concerned about discord among the direct disciples, the sect elders send them to a secret realm near Myriad Ancient City. Before departure, Chi Wang and Chu Song's group-chat argument leads to a nighttime spar that ends in a draw. Their rivalry continues aboard Jiang Yueyan's Divine Wind Boat, where Chi Wang begins cultivating after seeing Chu Song do the same 15.
In the city, Chi Wang enjoys witnessing friction between cultivation sects. He is displeased when Tang Yao offers assistance to the Azure Cloud Sect disciples instead of allowing the dispute to continue 17.
Spirit-Devouring Blood Formation
Inside the Fusang secret realm, Chi Wang discovers that a killing formation exclusive to the Devil Race has been set without his knowledge. Realizing that it will consume him as readily as the other cultivators, he wonders whether he has become a discarded pawn and whether his eldest brother consented 21.
A Spirit-Devouring Vine overwhelms his defenses until Jiang Yueyan destroys it with a high-grade Law Artifact. Chi Wang quietly thanks him and accepts correction to address him as “Eldest Senior Brother.” He also accepts Explosion Talismans supplied by Chu Song, then thanks Tang Yao after learning they originally belonged to her. The four disciples subsequently begin searching for the formation's core together 21 22.
Trivia
- Some contestants mistake his theft of Chu Song's identity token for an act of protection and support a “Chi-Hua” pairing. Chi Wang's hostile reaction quickly silences its supporters 8 13.
- His original position as the sect's third disciple differs from the altered seniority: Chu Song is addressed as Second Senior Sister and Tang Yao as Third Senior Sister, placing Chi Wang below both 5 21 22.
