Background / History
Cao Cao rose to prominence during the campaign against the Yellow Turban Rebellion. He subsequently joined the Guandong Coalition against Dong Zhuo. The Heavenly Screen identifies him and Sun Jian among the few coalition commanders who fought earnestly while most members hesitated or pursued their own interests 3 4.
After establishing himself in Yan Province, Cao Cao recruited talent, implemented military farming colonies, and accumulated provisions. He welcomed the displaced Emperor Xian to Xu Capital, gaining the political advantage described by the screen as “holding the Son of Heaven hostage to command the lords” 5.
Before Yang Feng becomes his rival, Cao Cao is Yang Feng’s preferred prospective employer. Drawing on his knowledge of history, Yang Feng considers him ambitious, strategically gifted, receptive to unconventional talent, and comparatively safe for meritorious subordinates. These are Yang Feng’s assessments, rather than guarantees about Cao Cao’s conduct in the altered timeline 1 2.
Appearance
- Short beard: Frequently strokes it while considering the Heavenly Screen’s revelations 8 23.
- Sharp gaze: His eyes are repeatedly compared to an eagle’s or hawk’s, especially when assessing threats or asserting authority 8 18 20.
- Sword at his waist: Keeps the Heaven-Leaning Sword close at hand during court proceedings 20.
Personality
Cao Cao is openly ambitious and initially interprets the Heavenly Screen’s clues as evidence that he is its promised “greatest emperor of all time.” His advisers’ praise delights him, although he briefly recognizes that public confirmation of such a destiny could unite the other warlords against him 2 3 4 7.
His response to Yang Feng combines admiration, resentment, and political hostility. After initially rejecting the idea of a slave becoming emperor, he recognizes the patience required to survive repeated upheavals. He later appreciates Yang Feng’s assessment of the realm, but grows jealous of his seemingly effortless acquisition of followers and territory 8 29 31 37.
Cao Cao can recover from shock and accept practical counsel. Guo Jia repeatedly redirects his anger toward strategic opportunities. Even after the Heaven and Earth Cannon terrifies him, he suppresses his panic and rallies his court around the more immediate struggle against Yuan Shao 20 37 44.
His confidence also makes him susceptible to interpretations that favor his own prospects. He readily accepts predictions of his rivals’ failure and incorrectly concludes that Lü Bu’s journey to Shouchun is an assassination attempt against Yang Feng 23 41 49.
Abilities & Skills
Military Command
Cao Cao is treated by allies and rivals as a formidable commander. His most detailed battlefield achievements appear in the Heavenly Screen’s projected future, not as completed events in the ongoing timeline 32 40 46.
- Operational security: Accepts Guo Jia’s recommendation to eliminate Lü Bu before marching west, preventing a projected attack on Yan Province 40.
- Siege warfare: Diverts the Yi and Si rivers to flood Xiapi in the screen’s account of Lü Bu’s defeat 40.
- Decisive raids: Personally leads five thousand elite cavalry against Yuan Shao’s supply depot at Wuchao after receiving Xu You’s intelligence 46.
- Limit: His projected army of three hundred thousand collapses in panic after Yang Feng’s cannon erases a nearby hill 43.
Political Strategy
Cao Cao uses his control of the Han emperor to give his campaigns imperial legitimacy 5 6.
- Issues a proclamation against Yuan Shu in Emperor Xian’s name 6.
- Treats rival imperial claims as grounds for punitive campaigns 5 40.
- Keeps his army alert rather than immediately attacking Yang Feng, judging the Heavenly Screen’s information more valuable than an impulsive response 20.
Administration and Recruitment
His power base rests on agricultural organization, provisions, and the employment of capable subordinates 2 5.
- Establishes farming colonies to support the population and military 2 5.
- Appoints men on merit, an achievement praised by Guo Jia 2.
- Absorbs defeated or defecting forces in the screen’s forecasts, including Yuan Shu’s generals, Lü Bu’s followers, Zhang Xiu’s forces, Zhang He, and Gao Lan 7 40 46.
Leadership Under Pressure
Cao Cao can restore outward discipline even when personally uncertain 44.
- Calms his frightened officials after witnessing the Heaven and Earth Cannon 44.
- Promises that his faction will eventually produce weapons equal or superior to Yang Feng’s; no such weapon is shown in the supplied chapters 44.
- Redirects attention toward Yuan Shao despite privately doubting his own chances of victory 44.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Heaven-Leaning Sword — Worn at his waist; Cao Cao rests his hand on its hilt during the meeting that brings news of Yang Feng’s enthronement 20.
Relationships
- Yang Feng — Initially an unknown slave whom Cao Cao comes to regard as unusually patient and capable; later an imperial rival whose poetry and political analysis earn reluctant admiration. Yang Feng had originally intended to escape Yuan Shu and enter Cao Cao’s service 1 8 26 29.
- Guo Jia — Chief strategist and trusted counsellor. Repeatedly steadies Cao Cao, identifies opportunities, and receives credit for foreseeing Lü Bu’s projected betrayal. Cao Cao praises him as “my Zifang” 20 37 40 41.
- Xun Yu — Senior adviser who supports Cao Cao’s prospects against Yuan Shao and helps restore confidence after the cannon revelation 11 29 44.
- Cheng Yu — Adviser who endorses Cao Cao’s claim to exceptional achievement and joins discussions of the screen’s revelations 2 11 13.
- Emperor Xian / Liu Xie — Nominal sovereign under Cao Cao’s control. Cao Cao alternates between intimidating him and promising to defend Han authority against Yang Feng 20 31.
- Yuan Shao — Principal northern rival. Cao Cao considers him indecisive despite his superior resources; the screen predicts Cao Cao’s victory at Guandu and conquest of his territories 11 29 46.
- Lü Bu — Rival and projected temporary ally whose planned betrayal leads to his execution by Cao Cao in the screen’s account. In the ongoing timeline, Lü Bu instead chooses allegiance to Yang Feng 40 47 49.
- Chen Gong — Former associate who betrayed Cao Cao and helped Lü Bu seize Yan Province. After the screen predicts Lü Bu’s death, Chen Gong initially considers returning to Cao Cao, but later persuades Lü Bu to join Yang Feng 40 47.
- Xu You — Yuan Shao’s adviser whose projected defection supplies the plan to burn Wuchao. Yuan Shao kills him after watching the revelation, removing that participant from the ongoing timeline 45 46 47.
Story Role / Major Arcs
The Expected Emperor
Cao Cao begins as one of the warlords convinced that the Heavenly Screen is announcing his destiny. Its accounts of his campaigns, political consolidation, and projected acceptance of Yuan Shu’s defeated generals reinforce that belief. The identification of Yang Feng abruptly overturns his expectations 2 3 4 7 8.
Unlike those who dismiss Yang Feng solely because of his status, Cao Cao quickly recognizes that surviving years of disorder and gathering an army after Yuan Shu’s fall would require exceptional patience and methods 8.
Yang Feng’s Imperial Challenge
News that Yang Feng has killed Yuan Shu and founded the Great Yang Empire shocks Cao Cao. He angrily silences Emperor Xian’s lamentations, then accepts Guo Jia’s advice to wait rather than become the first lord to attack 20.
His assessment fluctuates as the screen reveals more. He expects Fa Zheng and Li Yan to obstruct Yang Feng, only to learn that Yang Feng wins their allegiance. He appreciates Yang Feng’s prediction that he will defeat Yuan Shao, but becomes increasingly wary of Yang Feng’s repeated elevations to imperial power 23 26 28 29 31.
When Fa Zheng and Li Yan actually kill Liu Zhang and surrender Yizhou, Cao Cao resents Yang Feng’s territorial gain. Guo Jia restores his confidence by arguing that defeating Yang Feng would place Yizhou within Cao Cao’s reach 35 37.
Campaigns Revealed by the Heavenly Screen
The following events are screen-displayed forecasts, not confirmed accomplishments in the ongoing timeline.
| Campaign / Development | Chapter | Revealed Outcome |
|---|---|---|
| Coalition against Yuan Shu | 6 7 | Cao Cao joins Liu Bei, Lü Bu, and Sun Ce in surrounding Shouchun. Most of Yuan Shu’s defeated generals eventually surrender to him. |
| Western campaign and Lü Bu’s betrayal | 40 | Raises one hundred thousand troops against Yang Feng, then turns against Lü Bu after Guo Jia discovers a planned attack on Yan Province. |
| Fall of Xiapi | 40 | Floods the city, captures Lü Bu, and has him hanged at White Gate Tower. |
| Advance toward Yizhou | 40 | Absorbs additional forces, expands his army beyond three hundred thousand, and reaches Hanzhong without battle. |
| “Shooting a Cannon at the Camp Gate” | 43 | Yang Feng confronts his army with eight hundred death warriors and the Heaven and Earth Cannon. One shot destroys a hill and routs Cao Cao’s troops. |
| Battle of Guandu | 45 46 | With fewer than one hundred thousand troops against Yuan Shao’s seven hundred thousand, Cao Cao faces dwindling provisions before Xu You supplies the plan to burn Wuchao. |
| Unification of the north | 46 | After victory at Guandu, conquers Ji, Qing, Bing, and You provinces and uproots the Yuan clan’s power. |
The Cannon and the Northern Rivalry
Watching his projected defeat leaves Cao Cao pale, trembling, and briefly unable to speak. He nevertheless rallies his officials, declares that Yang Feng’s technological advantage need not be permanent, and redirects preparations toward Yuan Shao 43 44.
The subsequent Guandu revelation restores his enthusiasm. Rather than despairing at the forecast of a three-way division, he welcomes the prospect of competing with Yang Feng and the other southern powers. Yuan Shao responds differently: he executes Xu You in an attempt to prevent the foretold defeat, altering a crucial condition of the screen’s account 46 47.
Misreading Lü Bu’s Allegiance
After Lü Bu leaves Xu Province for Shouchun, Cao Cao assumes that he and Chen Gong intend to kill Yang Feng in a surprise attack. He is unaware that they are travelling to pledge allegiance, while Zhang Liao raises the Great Yang Empire’s flag in Xu Province 49.
