Geography and Layout
- Urban area: An enormous city crossed by intersecting streets lined with shops. The Xu Household’s five weapons workshops are distributed throughout the city 3 9.
- Northwestern district: The Song Household’s array hall occupies a sprawling mountainside complex in the far northwest 30.
- Sunset Mountain Range: A training and hunting destination for the city’s martial artists. The range stretches for one hundred thousand li and contains powerful Demon Beasts in its depths 34.
- Mining routes: The Xu Household transports purple-gold ore through the mountains to supply its city workshops. Repeated ambushes along the route temporarily halt production 33 38.
Government and Major Powers
The City Lord’s Estate holds authority above the four great lineages, which ordinarily avoid offending it. The Pill Treasure Pavilion is an exception: it belongs to no lineage and operates outside the city lord’s jurisdiction 3 15 25.
| Power | Leadership / Notable Members | Position and Activities |
|---|---|---|
| City Lord’s Estate | Qi Enshi; Commander Guo | Dominates the city’s political life. Qi Enshi secretly participates in the conspiracy against the Xu Household 25 28 37 38. |
| Song Household | Song Tianhao; Song Ling | The wealthiest and foremost of the four great lineages, renowned for formations. Its array hall has supported its standing for more than two hundred years 14 30 33. |
| Xu Household | Xu Yilin; Xu Lingxue; Liu Wuxie | A leading weapons producer with shallower foundations than the other three lineages. Xu Yilin, a peak Spirit Cleansing Realm cultivator, is one of the city’s ten greatest experts 2 6. |
| Tian Household | Tian Qisha | The Xu Household’s chief competitor in artifact refining. It poaches Xu craftsmen and allies with the Wan Household against the Xu family 6 33 38. |
| Wan Household | Wan Rongzhe; Wan Zhuoran; Wan Butong | Specializes in beast taming and beast-fighting arenas. Its ancestor established the family’s fortunes after acquiring a mysterious Beast Taming Technique roughly a century earlier 15 19. |
| Pill Treasure Pavilion | Bi Gongyu; Master Huo; Lei Tao | The city’s largest medicinal-ingredient supplier and pill seller. Rumored to be backed by the Heavenly Treasure Sect 3 46. |
| Langya Mercenary Corps | Langya | A separate armed force notorious for accepting criminal work, including murder and arson. The Tian and Wan households hire it to attack the Xu mine 41 42. |
Connections to the Imperial Capital
- Wan and Tian households: Their association with the capital’s Xue Household strengthens their position against local rivals 22 47.
- Song Household: Maintains ties with the capital’s Li Household, which likely helps shield it during the Stone-Breaking Army investigation 47.
- Xu Household: Xu Lingxue becomes a disciple of Imperial Academy instructor Baili Qing. Qi Enshi avoids directly attacking the family partly out of concern over Baili Qing’s reaction 16 27 28.
Economy
Weapons and Artifact Refining
- Market division: Before the struggle between the two families intensifies, the Xu Household controls approximately seventy percent of the city’s weapons market, while the Tian Household holds thirty percent 6.
- Production: The Xu Household’s five workshops manufacture at least several thousand weapons daily, yet still struggle to meet demand 6.
- Materials: Xu weapons use purple-gold ore; Tian weapons use blue wind stone, which produces blue molten iron when melted 12.
- Mercenary customers: Mercenary companies purchase thirty percent of the Xu Household’s weapons. Frequent mountain expeditions cause heavy wear on their equipment 10.
- Spiritual weapons: After learning Liu Wuxie’s techniques, Hu Shi produces weapons imbued with spirituality. Their improved quality and unchanged prices draw orders from martial halls, smaller lineages, and neighboring cities, severely damaging Tian business 28 29.
Pills and Medicinal Goods
- Local supplier: The Pill Treasure Pavilion holds a monopoly on Origin-Nurturing Pills within Canglan City, although those pills are common elsewhere 46.
- Branch decline: The local pavilion ranks second from last in a dynasty-wide evaluation. After the lowest-ranked branch is ordered closed, Canglan’s branch faces the same threat 46.
- Heavenly Spirit Pills: Liu Wuxie’s pills sell out before noon and attract advance orders from surrounding cities, offering the branch a chance to recover 25 46.
- Capital imports: Rare ingredients, including Nine Yang Fruit and Crimson Spirit Grass, are brought from Imperial Capital City 25.
Hunting and Mining
- Demon Beast products: Local cultivators sell demon cores to city shops, with most reaching the Pill Treasure Pavilion. Hides, fur, tendons, and bones also supply medicine and armor production 34.
- Mine employment: The Xu Household’s generous wages attract commoners from Canglan City to its purple-gold mine 41.
Cultivation and Training
Local Resources and Craftsmanship
- Scarce Spiritual Qi: The city’s remote location limits its usefulness to cultivators with heavy resource requirements, particularly Liu Wuxie 40.
- Initial refining limits: Before Liu Wuxie’s intervention, no local artifact refiner has mastered thousandfold refining or can produce spirit artifacts. The city possesses no more than five spirit artifacts 10.
- Spirit inscriptions: Canglan City initially lacks a spirit rune master capable of supporting the Xu Household’s new refining methods 11.
Training Facilities
| Facility | Features |
|---|---|
| Song Household Array Hall | Offers varied training environments, including the Meteor Array for footwork and the Baleful Intent Breaking Array for combat. Arrays are divided into Postnatal and Innate categories 30. |
| Wan Household Beast-Fighting Arena | Provides beast-based training and hosts the Hundred Demon Gathering. Its reputation suffers after its rigged operations are exposed 15 33. |
| Sunset Mountain Range | Supports practical combat training, Demon Beast hunting, and the collection of valuable beast materials 34. |
History
Breakdown of the Lineages’ Peace
The four great lineages maintained separate foundations and decades of relative peace before the Tian Household began poaching the Xu Household’s master artificers. Defective replacement weapons and coordinated disturbances at Xu workshops threatened the family’s principal livelihood. Liu Wuxie exposed a fraudulent claim involving a broken saber made from Tian materials but bearing the Xu mark 6 11 12 14 24.
At the Wan Household’s Hundred Demon Gathering, Liu Wuxie clashed with members of the Wan and Tian households and their capital ally, Xue Yu. His victories in the beast contests embarrassed the hosts; the subsequent exposure of rigged operations caused arena business to decline 15 19 20 22 33.
Xu Household Recovery
Hu Shi’s new refining techniques restored the Xu Household’s commercial advantage. Its spiritual weapons drew overwhelming demand, while Liu Wuxie’s breakthrough to the Xiantian Realm produced a citywide phenomenon: Spiritual Qi converged above the Xu residence, condensed into rain, and caused vegetation to grow rapidly 28 29.
The Tian and Wan households then targeted the Xu family’s ore supply and city businesses. Liu Wuxie defeated the attackers at the mine, killed Langya, and established a defensive formation around the mining grounds. Meanwhile, Xu Yilin remained in Canglan City and repelled a surprise attack on the workshops 33 38 42 44 45.
Stone-Breaking Army Investigation
The disappearance of fifty Stone-Breaking Army soldiers and their thousand-man commander brought an imperial investigation to Canglan City. All four great lineages came under scrutiny, but the inquiry increasingly focused on the Xu Household as a potential scapegoat 46 47 48.
Bi Gongyu defended Liu Wuxie with an account of medicinal-ingredient gathering, while Qi Enshi redirected suspicion toward the Langya Mercenary Corps. The investigators ultimately declared that Langya had killed the soldiers and that his corps had fled abroad. The team left the city overnight, sparing the Xu Household from prosecution 49 50.
Qi Enshi’s intervention concealed his own involvement in the conspiracy. Liu Wuxie retained records implicating the city lord in an earlier massacre, leaving him with leverage over Canglan City’s ruler 37 38 50.
