Purpose and Principles
- Mutual rescue: Pools the resources of parallel spacetimes to confront disasters that individual worlds cannot survive alone. Its remit includes natural catastrophes, viral outbreaks, and possible alien invasions 7.
- Refuge between worlds: Exploits differences in the timing of apocalypses, allowing threatened populations to shelter in another world and return after their own disaster subsides 9.
- Preservation and rebuilding: Seeks to save lives while preserving each spacetime’s strength, rather than merely extracting a small group of survivors 7 31.
- Core principle: Individual membership applications state “mutual help, mutual support, mutual rescue” 7.
Membership and Governance
Individual Membership
| Aspect | Terms |
|---|---|
| Enrollment | Applicants sign and affix fingerprints to customized membership documents. These are actually Zhang Tianyuan’s territory-naturalization terms, making signatories his residents without an option to reverse the decision 7. |
| Obligations | Follow official arrangements, maintain confidentiality, and actively cooperate with and participate in rescue efforts 7. |
| Benefits | Eligibility to use territory facilities. Zhang also states that Society membership is required to use his Spacetime Tunnel 7 9. |
| Joining cost | The initial terms demand no contribution from new members; enrollment occupies a territory resident slot 7. |
| Local administration | Members normally remain under their own governments and nationally established Society branches 10 24. |
| Direct Society jurisdiction | Applies to directly affiliated members, with additional exceptions during disasters or when an individual is out of contact 10. |
| Recruitment policy | In principle, citizens of countries and timelines receiving aid are obliged to join their respective branches 24. |
Member States
- Reciprocal assistance: Member states must respond to Society warnings by helping other spacetimes threatened by apocalyptic disasters 10.
- Fair compensation: Rescued parties negotiate reasonable compensation with both the rescuing party and the Society 10.
- Operational support: States must cooperate with Society work, encourage citizens to enroll, and cover rescue-operation expenses 10.
- Noninterference: Zhang promises to leave each world’s internal affairs to its own people. National jurisdiction over ordinary members gives this policy a formal basis 9 10.
- Financial independence: Zhang declines routine operating funds from member states to prevent them from gaining influence over the Society’s internal affairs. He instead intends to collect funds after rescue operations 10.
- Public disclosure: Governments decide when to reveal the Society and impending disasters to their populations. The first member state initially keeps both secret while preparing evacuation plans and drills 10.
Organization
| Component | Base / Personnel | Function |
|---|---|---|
| Presidency | Zhang Tianyuan | Provides interworld travel, disaster warnings, and coordination between member states; guarantees fair cooperation 9 23 34. |
| First Branch / First Division | No. 1 Spacetime, the 2012 world | Secretly established to recruit members and organize personnel for the parallel-world mission. Bai Xu serves as its dispatched representative 12 25. |
| Second Branch / Second Division | No. 2 Spacetime, the I Am Legend world | Established through Tong Wenshi’s settlement. Its first core staff comprise four newly recruited cadres; Bai Xu remains behind to assist its development 25 26. |
| 0808 Task Force | First core members in the 2012 world | Public designation for a group that includes academy members, physicists, instrument operators, and biochemical experts supporting the initial crossing 14. |
| Advance team | 150 specialists | Includes soldiers, doctors, engineers, diplomatic and administrative personnel, virologists, and a nuclear, biological, and chemical protection team 13. |
| Reserve force | Approximately 10,000 members from No. 1 Spacetime | Trains for deployment to No. 2 Spacetime and becomes the personnel base for the first large-scale aid mission 13 31 34. |
Capabilities and Resources
Spacetime Travel
The Society’s interworld operations depend on Zhang Tianyuan’s Spacetime Tunnel, not on a transport technology independently operated by its branches 9 29.
- Moves personnel, vehicles, supplies, and evacuees between worlds 26 37.
- Requires Society membership, according to Zhang’s explanation of his ability 9.
- Consumes base energy: after the reserve force enrolls, Zhang can receive more than 10,000 points every ten days, enough to open the tunnel for one second 13.
- Cannot solve accommodation by itself. Zhang’s small personal territory cannot shelter the billion-plus people under discussion, making agreements with other worlds essential 9.
Medical and Biological Protection
- KV vaccine: Zhang obtains the production method and inactivated virus through the wishing machine; laboratories in the 2012 world manufacture and test the vaccine. Trials report no abnormalities and a 100 percent antibody response rate 12 13.
- Protected childbirth: Pregnant survivors are transferred to the uninfected parallel world for medical care. Virus-free delivery rooms and vaccination are proposed to restore population growth in Legend World 23 26 28.
- Containment: The first crossing uses an isolated site whose air and dust are to be extracted and destroyed afterward because of possible viral transmission through the tunnel 14.
- Quarantine: Returning travelers undergo a month of quarantine and testing before meeting the 2012 leadership 29.
Rescue and Reconstruction
- Survivor outreach: Uses leaflets, radio broadcasts, rooftop signal fires, fireworks, and loudspeaker vehicles to locate survivors 16 20.
- Field logistics: Operates command vehicles, ambulances, generators, water-purification vehicles, cargo trucks, and fuel tankers 20.
- Darkseeker protection: Deploys powerful ultraviolet lighting and armored vehicles during operations in infected cities 20 41.
- Technical recovery: Gains authorized access to classified national records covering industry, engineering, geography, and other fields; teams sort, disinfect, and prepare them for transfer 38.
Territory Facilities
- Elementary School: Grants eligible users 30 percent greater memory, 10 percent greater comprehension, and 100 percent greater language-learning ability 7.
- Restricted access: Nonresidents cannot activate its effects, prompting Zhang’s first membership invitation 7.
- Diplomatic use: Hosts the first formal meeting between the two worlds’ leaders 29.
History
Foundation and the First Member State
Zhang Tianyuan establishes the Society while explaining his rescue plans to Bai Xu’s group. He confirms its name through his system and prints the first individual applications after discovering that nonresidents cannot benefit from his school 7.
Negotiations with the 2012 world’s Chinese leadership expand the project from individual recruitment to national membership. After securing noninterference provisions, the leaders accept the member-state application in principle. Bai Xu and four companions subsequently become residents, and a secret national branch begins recruiting the promised reserve force 10 12.
First Expedition to Legend World
A vaccinated, 150-person advance team prepares to enter I Am Legend, supported by a trained reserve force of roughly ten thousand members. Its mission combines survivor rescue with finding a refuge for the population threatened by the 2012 catastrophe 13.
The expedition gathers sixty-two survivors around the Imperial Capital, including Ding Jingye’s group, increasing the traveling party from 156 to 218 people. It takes in another thirty-five survivors en route to the northern grasslands, where it locates Tong Wenshi’s settlement 20.
Second Member State and Branch
Tong initially demands evidence of the visitors’ parallel-world origins. He later signs the member-state application after Zhang offers fair cooperation, protected childbirth, and assistance reclaiming cities from the Darkseekers. Zhang supplies fifty thousand individual applications and asks him to establish a local branch 21 23.
Tong also sees Zhang as a potential protector against domination by the far stronger 2012 country. When the settlement’s forty thousand survivors doubt the Society’s claims, Zhang transports Tong, the pregnant women, and accompanying personnel to the other world. Bai Xu stays behind to assist the Second Branch; footage confirming the travelers’ safety helps convince survivors to begin enrolling 24 25 26 29.
Cross-Spacetime Cooperation
| Participant | Agreed contribution |
|---|---|
| No. 1 Spacetime — 2012 | Supplies resources, experts, engineers, and workers to help eliminate Darkseekers and restore production in No. 2 Spacetime 31 38. |
| No. 2 Spacetime — I Am Legend | Temporarily shelters refugees from No. 1 Spacetime and later assists its reconstruction 31. |
The first large aid convoy returns to the grassland settlement with supplies and personnel for a camp accommodating more than ten thousand people. Warm clothing is distributed, and the Society begins implementing the cooperation agreement 37.
A subsequent mission replaces the Imperial Capital’s nationwide emergency broadcast with rescue instructions, survival guidance, and information about the Society’s arrival. Distant survivor camps hear the announcement, and leaders in a desert settlement consider making contact 38 41.
Antarctic and Space-Station Rescue Plans
The Society next investigates survivors beyond the main settlements. Records identify 166 personnel stationed at the country’s three Antarctic bases when the outbreak began, while three astronauts remain aboard the International Space Station 45.
By Chapter 47, the Society has recruited Antarctic and aerospace specialists and plans simultaneous operations: Zhang will lead the Antarctic mission, while an aerospace team searches No. 2 Spacetime for technical documents needed to rescue the astronauts. These remain planned operations at this stage 47.
