- Wears red robes during his first investigation of Floating Cloud Mountain 8.
Personality
Guyue initially treats those he considers weaker with cold superiority. After detecting no cultivation in Ye Qingyun, he orders him off the mountain and later calls him an “ant” while preparing to push him aside. His confidence collapses when the pond’s true dragon threatens him and behaves docilely toward Ye Qingyun 8.
Once convinced that Ye Qingyun is an unfathomable expert, Guyue becomes deeply deferential. He kneels to apologize, interprets unfamiliar expressions as possible guidance, and lavishly praises Ye Qingyun’s name. He also reasons that Ye Qingyun wishes to experience mortal life without exposing his supposed cultivation 9.
His concern for Dongfang Su extends beyond obeying orders: he offers to taste unfamiliar hot pot before the emperor eats it. During the invasion of the Eastern Realm, he urgently seeks Ye Qingyun’s intervention and falls into despair when his appeal fails 12 44 45.

History
Discovery of the Pond’s Dragon
Dongfang Su dispatches Guyue southwest after sensing unusually powerful Dragon Qi. Reaching Floating Cloud Mountain, Guyue notices its missing ancient restrictions, encounters Ye Qingyun, and dismisses him as an ordinary mortal. At the summit, he discovers a courtyard full of heavenly treasures and a powerful bald rabbit who orders him out of its master’s territory 8.
Following the Dragon Qi, Guyue witnesses a true dragon emerge from the courtyard pond. When he subsequently attempts to push Ye Qingyun aside, the dragon fixes him with a threatening stare. Its contrasting docility toward Ye Qingyun convinces Guyue that the apparently ordinary man must be a hidden expert 8 9.
Guyue kneels in apology and introduces himself. Warned by the dragon’s gaze, he retracts his claim that there is a dragon in the pond when Ye Qingyun questions him. He nevertheless reports both the dragon and its apparent master to Dongfang Su. His advice to avoid immediately disturbing Ye Qingyun leads the emperor to schedule a visit half a month later 9 10.
Imperial Visit and Breakthrough
Guyue accompanies Dongfang Su to the mountain and introduces the emperor to Ye Qingyun. During the hot-pot meal, he offers to taste the food first for his sovereign’s safety. After eating, he advances from early to middle Core Formation, joining several other guests who experience cultivation breakthroughs 11 12 13.
Invasion of the Eastern Realm
When three dynasties invade with a million-strong allied army, Guyue reminds Dongfang Su that Ye Qingyun lives within the threatened Eastern Realm. Carrying the emperor’s token, he reaches Floating Cloud Mountain ahead of He Yun’s four hundred thousand troops and pleads for help 44.
Ye Qingyun instead begins packing to flee, insisting that he is an ordinary mortal incapable of opposing an army. Guyue kneels and begs him to reconsider but ultimately leaves empty-handed. After He Yun’s defeat, he reports the refusal to Dongfang Su, who resolves to lead the campaign personally 44 45.
Gifts and Renewed Threats
After the true dragon routs the allied army, Guyue accompanies Dongfang Su on a visit of thanks. Seeing the temples around Floating Cloud Mountain, he agrees that Ye Qingyun may be the Buddhist Holy Son. He then presents the emperor’s gifts—the Heaven-Plundering Sword and a precious suit of soft armor—and is stunned when Ye Qingyun immediately gives both to Guo Xiaoyun 47 48 49.
Guyue later reports that thirty-odd martial experts from the three rival dynasties are heading toward Floating Cloud Mountain. Dongfang Su orders the three great sects to support Ye Qingyun, and Guyue promptly relays the command 50.
Relationships
- Dongfang Su — Sovereign and direct superior, who bestowed Guyue’s name. Guyue serves as his personal guard, investigator, messenger, and accompanying attendant on visits to Ye Qingyun 8 9 47 50.
- Ye Qingyun — Initially dismissed as a powerless mortal, then revered as a hidden master. Ye Qingyun is only the second person, after Dongfang Su, before whom Guyue has knelt 8 9.
- The pond’s true dragon — Its threatening gaze stops Guyue from acting against Ye Qingyun and later makes him deny its presence when questioned 8 9.
- Guo Xiaoyun — Ye Qingyun’s disciple. Guyue assumes that someone accepted by such a master must possess exceptional talent and quietly examines the boy alongside Dongfang Su 49.
