Background / History

Founding Konoha

Madara originally sought enough strength to end warfare and give children a childhood free from battlefields. After failing to overcome Hashirama Senju, he cooperated with his rival to pacify the Shinobi World and establish Konoha 44.

He later became disillusioned with the village and the peace it represented. The Uchiha stone tablet’s account of the Shinobi World’s origins and the Sage of Six Paths changed his outlook, leading him to leave Konoha. Although he was still the Uchiha patriarch, his clan refused to accompany him. He nevertheless trusted that Hashirama would not punish them for his departure 36 44.

Eye of the Moon Plan

Madara developed the Eye of the Moon Plan around Infinite Tsukuyomi, believing it would bring complete peace. He awakened the Rinnegan only when his body was already old and failing, forcing him to arrange for others to carry out preparations and eventually resurrect him 29 34.

His arrangements involved Obito, Nagato, and Black Zetsu. He placed a safeguard inside Obito’s heart and regarded Black Zetsu as so closely connected to himself that betrayal seemed inconceivable. At the time of his summoning, he expected his next awakening to be the resurrection that would allow him to complete the plan 29 34 48.

Appearance

  • Hair and armor: Long black hair and red armor 29 36.
  • Reanimated features: Cracks across his face and exposed arms, with a noticeably lifeless appearance 29 30.
  • Sharingan: Scarlet eyes with black sclera in his summoned state; his Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan displays a distinctive black pattern 29 34.
  • Rinnegan: Concentric rings spread outward from his pupils when activated 49.
  • Mannerisms: Frequently folds his arms, raises his chin, and looks down on opponents 29 30 43.

Personality

Madara is proud, domineering, and deeply resistant to being controlled. He initially dismisses the National Fortune Game as a waste of his time and addresses Lin Xiaoran as “brat.” Unable to attack his Master, he considers withholding assistance so that her death will allow him to return home 29 30.

He is nevertheless willing to negotiate and generally honors an exchange once its terms are met. Lin Xiaoran secures his cooperation by offering information about the Shinobi World, then continues trading revelations for combat assistance and lessons. His curiosity eventually makes him volunteer for beast hunting rather than wait to be asked 30 33 34 36.

His arrogance includes a pronounced desire to display his strength. He repeatedly offers techniques far beyond what ordinary beasts require and feels disappointed when Lin Xiaoran prioritizes efficiency over spectacle. Despite this confidence, he recognizes genuine threats: her Gravity Radiation Gun makes him reconsider both her capabilities and the danger posed by her world’s technology 31 38 42 50.

Madara’s pursuit of peace coexists with ruthlessness and enduring attachment to his clan. He is indifferent to Obito causing his teacher’s death, yet reacts furiously to the Uchiha massacre. Learning that his own peace plan was built on deception finally shakes his certainty enough for him to ask Lin Xiaoran what he should do next 35 36 48 49.

Abilities & Skills

Sharingan and Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan

  • Combat enhancement: His Mangekyō abilities strengthen ninjutsu and improve the agility and force of his taijutsu 30.
  • Observation: Uses his Sharingan to examine Lin Xiaoran’s gravity power, identifying that it requires neither chakra nor hand seals 33.
  • Ocular resistance: Explains that Lin Xiaoran’s matching Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan can detect and break his genjutsu; suppressing her ocular power would require his Rinnegan 34.

Fire Release and Earth Release

  • Great Fireball Technique: Kills and roasts an E-rank giant crab in a single attack. His Fire Release can produce S-rank effects or greater when he chooses 33.
  • Majestic Destroyer Flame: Creates a sea of fire more than a hundred meters wide, destroying ten thousand F-rank insects and earning Lin Xiaoran 50,000 points 38.
  • Anti-army attacks: Burns through Yimopu’s corpse-eating beetles and mummies, forcing the opposing wizard to protect his Master 42.
  • Earth Release: Uses it alongside Fire Release to rapidly kill beasts concealed beneath the desert 36.

Susanoo

  • Defense and armament: Manifests a blue giant armed with swords. Its hundred-meter second stage cuts apart an enormous sandstorm 43 44.
  • Perfect form: An eight-hundred-meter armored, winged giant controlled from the gem in its forehead. This form requires the Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan and enormous chakra reserves 44.
  • Offensive scale: Described as capable of cleaving mountains, severing rivers, and contending with the Nine-Tails 44.
  • Recorded kills: Stomps Yimopu and the Evil Wizard to death, then uses a blade to kill an A-rank giant lizard sleeping beneath more than ten meters of sand 45.
  • Known concern: Madara senses that Lin Xiaoran’s Gravity Radiation Gun could pierce Susanoo’s defense; this is his assessment, not a demonstrated hit against it 31.

Rinnegan

  • Tengai Shinsei: Summons the meteorite that eliminates the remaining challengers in the final confrontation. His half-bodied Susanoo forms hand seals alongside him 50.
  • Other available techniques: Names Limbo: Border Jail and Planetary Devastation as alternatives, but does not demonstrate them in the supplied account 50.
  • Reanimated-body restriction: Recognizes that his nonliving body limits the strength he can exert, with those restrictions becoming apparent when he uses the Rinnegan 48.

Genjutsu and Instruction

  • Genjutsu expertise: Teaches Lin Xiaoran the fundamentals of Uchiha genjutsu after confirming that she has chakra and his Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan 34 35.
  • Ninjutsu instruction: Trains her in chakra use, hand seals, ninjutsu, and changes in chakra nature 40 47.
  • Master restriction: Attempts to control Lin Xiaoran through genjutsu, but the National Fortune Game prevents him from acting against her 34.

Wood Release

  • Origin: Acquired through fusion with Hashirama’s cells 49.
  • Interrupted technique: Begins casting “Wood Release: World of Trees…” against the Challenger Alliance, but Lin Xiaoran stops him and requests Tengai Shinsei instead 50.

Impure World Reincarnation Body

  • Sustained combat: Possesses inexhaustible chakra and energy, allowing him to hunt without fatigue 37.
  • Physical properties: Does not need food, feels neither pain nor temperature, and can reform a shattered body 31 33 48.
  • Personal drawback: Finds the lack of sensation unsatisfying because it diminishes his enjoyment of battle 33.
  • Control release: Understands the technique well enough to sever its controlling connection himself 30.
  • Game restrictions: Cannot initiate harm against his Master. Attempts to escape the game cause his power to be sealed and leave him unable to move 29 30 34.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Summoning and Information Bargain

  • Lin Xiaoran summons Madara for the five-day Scorching Sea of Sand survival round. His initial refusal to cooperate worries Country L’s observers 29.
  • She identifies his reanimated state and reveals knowledge of his faked death and associates, persuading him to exchange assistance for information 30.
  • Her system draws his Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan and loads his chakra into her body. He only discovers that she possesses his eyes when she reveals them while requesting lessons 30 34.
  • News of the Uchiha massacre initially strengthens his belief that the Shinobi World is rotten and that the Eye of the Moon Plan is necessary 35 36.

Desert Dominance

  • His destruction of the insect swarm establishes a new National Fortune Game record and places Lin Xiaoran overwhelmingly ahead of the other challengers 38 39.
  • Against Yimopu and the Evil Wizard, he escalates from Fire Release to Perfect Susanoo, defeating their sand-based attacks and killing them both 42 43 44 45.
  • After the A-rank lizard’s defeat, Lin Xiaoran chooses continued beast hunting over pursuing the remaining challengers. Madara continues accompanying and teaching her 45 47.

Learning the Truth

  • On the final night, Lin Xiaoran uses genjutsu to show him the Fourth Shinobi World War’s future. He watches his anticipated victory become Black Zetsu’s opportunity to revive Kaguya Ōtsutsuki 48.
  • He learns that Black Zetsu altered the Uchiha stone tablet and manipulated him through the promise of Infinite Tsukuyomi. These are revelations shown through an illusion, not transformations or events Madara undergoes during the desert round 48.
  • After seeing both the postwar peace and the later events of Boruto: Naruto Next Generations, he concludes that the Shinobi World needs institutional reform. Lin Xiaoran introduces her own world’s system as a reference, but he has not settled on a concrete reform program 49.

Final Victory

  • At the desert’s endpoint, Madara confronts Sophia’s Challenger Alliance and reveals his Rinnegan, undermining their confidence before battle begins 49.
  • At Lin Xiaoran’s request, he replaces his planned Wood Release attack with Tengai Shinsei. The resulting meteorite eliminates the other challengers, and the game declares the pair victorious 50.

Relationships

  • Lin Xiaoran — Master, negotiating partner, and student. She trades information for his assistance, learns his techniques, and ultimately exposes the deception behind his lifelong plan 30 34 48 49.
  • Hashirama Senju — Lifelong rival and fellow founder of Konoha. Madara’s two remembered defeats were both against him, and even after awakening the Rinnegan he wonders whether Hashirama would finally acknowledge him 30 33 44.
  • Obito Uchiha — Chosen stand-in for the Eye of the Moon Plan. Madara relies on a seal inside Obito’s heart as a safeguard, but becomes increasingly dissatisfied with his delays and independent actions 34 35 37 48.
  • Nagato — Intended caster of the resurrection technique that would restore Madara to life. Madara is bewildered to learn that Nagato instead sacrifices himself to revive Konoha’s dead 29 40.
  • Black Zetsu — Trusted agent whom Madara considers incapable of betraying him. Learning that Zetsu serves Kaguya destroys that assumption and forces him to reconsider his plans 34 48.
  • Tobirama Senju — Hated adversary and creator of Impure World Reincarnation. Madara nevertheless acknowledges his inventiveness; Tobirama’s Flying Thunder God killed Madara’s younger brother 30 37.
  • Uchiha Itachi — Younger clansman whom Madara angrily condemns after learning that he carried out the Uchiha massacre 35 36.
  • Kabuto Yakushi — The shinobi responsible for reanimating him in preparation for the Fourth Shinobi World War. Madara initially does not recognize his name 30 33 48.
