Can't You Forget Him?
He kissed me until I could barely breathe, and I pounded hard against his chest.
Only when I was almost out of air did he finally let me go.
He lifted his head, breathing hard, his gaze so scorching it could almost set someone alight.
A faint trace of crimson showed in those deep eyes.
"Yu Han," he said, his voice low and hoarse, as though forced from the depths of his throat. "Is Gu Mingze really that wonderful? Is it that hard for you to forget him?"
I frowned, the anger in my heart bursting fully into flame.
"Gu Hansheng, what do you mean? I've already explained this to you. There's nothing between him and me.
In all these years we've been married, I haven't even contacted him. What exactly are you so hung up on?"
But he had no intention of letting me off. Instead, he pressed another step closer, his breath scorching.
"Then what if, back then..."
He spoke each word distinctly, his gaze dark. "If Gu Mingze and I had both offered you a helping hand back then, would you have chosen him? Then the two of you could have lived happily together, instead of you being 'coerced' by me like you are now?"
I froze, my chest tightening, then laughed in sheer fury.
"Gu Hansheng, are you sick in the head?"
I shoved him away hard, even my voice trembling. "You're slinging mud at me over things you've made up in your own head! No matter how I explain, it's all lies in your eyes, isn't it?"
The pressure inside the car seemed almost heavy enough to freeze into ice.
I stared at him, my heart a complete mess.
I had never imagined that this man, always so rational and composed, could be so twisted and obsessive deep down.
I pushed the car door open and got out without looking back. My legs felt a little weak, but I forced myself into a taxi by the roadside.
In the darkness, everything outside the window blurred into lines.
When I returned to the villa, the door was ajar. I thought Gu Hansheng had already come home, but the house was empty, without a soul in sight.
Even as dawn approached, he still hadn't appeared.
That bastard.
He wouldn't let me see other men, yet he went off fooling around with other women himself.
For some reason, the thought that he might be with his white moonlight left a faint sourness in my heart.
I didn't know why I was angry. All I knew was that I couldn't suppress that sour ache in my chest.
I tossed and turned until dawn and had only just dozed off when my phone suddenly blared.
Frowning, I answered. A chaotic series of crashes and bangs came through the receiver.
Glass shattered, tables and chairs toppled, and my mother's tearful voice rang out.
"Hanhan! Come home, quick! Something's happened at home! Please save me!"
I bolted upright, my heart clenching, and rushed out before I had even properly changed my shoes.
The car had only just reached the entrance to the residential complex when I heard the commotion coming from upstairs.
Those familiar curses and sobs stabbed into my ears like needles.
I raced upstairs, pushed open the door, and froze.
The house was in complete disarray. The coffee table had been overturned, and broken glass littered the floor.
My mother huddled in a corner, her hair disheveled, her face covered in bruises.
My father's face was flushed crimson with rage, and he still clutched a mop handle.
"Dad! What are you doing?" I shouted as I lunged forward and shoved him away.
His whole body shook, even his fingers trembling. "Ask your mother what she's done!"
Before I could speak, my mother threw herself into my arms, clutching my hand in a death grip and sobbing so hard she could barely breathe.
"Hanhan, you have to save me this time! You have to help me!"
"Leave her alone!" my father roared, his voice hoarse. "Just let her die!"
"Enough!" I cut them off loudly, my head buzzing. "What happened? Explain!"
My mother shook all over as she cried, her lips trembling. "I... I invested with some other people. We were making money at first, but then we suddenly started losing it... I thought I could win it back, so I used the three million Gu Hansheng gave our family to keep things going..."
"What?" My breath caught.
She kept speaking in fits and starts. "That person was a scammer. I got lured into a pig-butchering scam. All the money's gone..."
I drew a deep breath, forcing down my anger. "If it's gone, it's gone. A stumble into a pit makes you wiser. As long as you haven't gone into debt."
"If she hadn't gone into debt, would I have hit her?" My father slammed his hand hard against the table, trembling with rage. "She lost the money and didn't dare tell me, then borrowed from loan sharks behind my back, thinking she could keep investing! Well, now she's been swindled out of everything, and she owes over ten million! Those people are coming to collect next week! They said if she doesn't pay, they'll chop off her legs!"
I stood rooted to the spot, my ears buzzing.
Ten million...
Loan sharks...
I looked at the wreckage of our home, my hands and feet turning cold.
My mother clutched at me as she cried. "Hanhan, go beg Hansheng to help us again. I really know I was wrong this time. I'll never do it again..."
I could barely speak. I only felt the world spinning around me.
At a time like this, how could I possibly have the face to ask Gu Hansheng for more money?
He had already given us more than enough.
Not only had he paid off our family's enormous loans, but he had also given us plenty of money for living expenses.
Three million was more than an ordinary family could save in a lifetime.
If we had simply lived within our means, we could have been very comfortable.
But instead...
Now it was all over.
