I wanted to ease the tension too
Early the next morning, I visited Yu Hui at the hospital, then went home.
I dug out the old laptop I had bought while I was in school. When my family went bankrupt, I had originally wanted to sell it for money.
But it was too old, and no one wanted it, so it had been sitting there ever since.
Born into such a well-off family, I had never needed to worry about my future.
When I went to university, I hadn't chosen a practical major, either. I had casually picked an arts program.
Studying hadn't mattered much to me. Squandering my youth was the most important thing in college.
Naturally, after graduation, I hadn't looked for a job, thinking I could just take some nominal, cushy position at my family's company.
Then that incident with Gu Hansheng had happened.
When I paid off my mother's loan sharks, I hadn't taken the million Yu Hui earned boxing. The entire fourteen million had come out of the money Gu Hansheng lent me.
All I had at my disposal was the remaining million.
My family had always been in business, and I couldn't quite resign myself to working for someone else now.
Even if I couldn't run a big business, surely I could start a small one.
But what could I do?
I sat in the living room, staring blankly at the laptop screen.
Sheltered by my parents back then, I hadn't learned much at university. My father had kept asking me to learn how to manage the company from him, but I hadn't taken it seriously, always thinking I could have fun for a few years and still have time to learn.
Now that I actually needed those skills, everything went dark before my eyes. I didn't know how to do anything.
It all seemed fine when I was only thinking about it, but when I actually tried to do it, I discovered that the mountains before me stretched on without end.
One mountain after another truly stood in my way.
I really didn't know what to do, so I called my father.
My father had inherited his company from my grandparents rather than building it from scratch. It had already been a large company when he took over, so he knew nothing about small businesses.
Still, my father gave me an idea. A food business would be better. After all, people could do without plenty of things, but not clothing, food, housing, and transportation.
The other three industries required more investment. Only food allowed you to start on a small budget.
But after saying that, my father rejected his own suggestion. "Hanhan, it seems you couldn't manage a food business, either!"
I asked why.
"Have you ever cooked?"
I froze for a moment. Apart from the two not particularly tasty dishes I had made in the kitchen with Auntie Zhang a while ago, I really had never cooked.
After hanging up, I fell silent.
Auntie Zhang came over and saw the information about snack shops I had searched for on my screen.
"Miss, is there a snack you'd like to eat? I can make most of them."
Leaving aside whether Auntie Zhang's cooking was good enough to sell, I wanted to see if I could learn first.
I pointed at a snack on the screen at random. "Auntie Zhang, can you make this? Teach me!"
Although Auntie Zhang seemed a little puzzled, she didn't ask any questions.
After spending the afternoon learning from her, I finally produced two decent bowls.
Auntie Zhang and I tried them and both thought they were all right, but the flavor still fell a little short of something we could sell.
After another couple of bites, Auntie Zhang, who rarely meddled in other people's affairs, suddenly asked, "Miss, did you and sir have a fight?"
I nodded without saying anything.
"I'll pack up the other bowl. Take it to sir's office!"
"Me?"
Auntie Zhang's expression was stern. "If you want to live more comfortably, you still need to please sir."
Please him? He probably found even the sight of me annoying.
I shook my head. "Bringing him food won't be enough to make up."
"At least let sir see your attitude."
Seeing my hesitation, Auntie Zhang added, "This is one of sir's favorite snacks."
Although Auntie Zhang rarely smiled, I could often feel her concern for me.
Looking at the packed food container, I went ahead and changed my clothes, put on some light makeup, and took a taxi to his company.
After getting out, I walked toward his company with heavy steps.
The last time I came, my mother had caused a scene here. His employees probably all recognized me, and showing up now with a food container wasn't exactly something to be proud of.
But I wanted to ease the tension between Gu Hansheng and me, too.
After all, what happened on the day he lent me the money had mainly been my fault.
I was also depending on him for my livelihood now, so I had to lower my eyes and be a little more submissive.
Thinking that way served as some encouragement.
I entered the company and headed straight for his executive office. His secretary froze for a moment when she saw me.
"Is President Gu in?"
The secretary didn't look at me kindly. "President Gu is in a meeting. Did you need something, Miss Yu?"
I supposed she really had no reason to put on a smile for an ex-wife even her boss looked down on.
"Then please give this to him for me." I planned to have the secretary pass it to Gu Hansheng, then leave.
The secretary was just about to speak when Gu Hansheng emerged from the conference room to one side.
Gu Hansheng was tall and handsome. I used to think he was quite good-looking. At home, he had always been meek and deferential, his expression pleasant.
But now, focused on his work, he had an air of refined distinction that was very attractive, too.
Unfortunately, Shen Nian had probably been in his heart all along.
When he saw me, his brows furrowed slightly.
See? I would have been better off not coming. All I did was annoy him.
He glanced at me without saying anything, then pushed open his office door and went straight in.
I was still hesitating over what to do when I heard his voice, an octave lower. "Come in."
