Background / History

Origin and Passage into the Human Realm

The Necronomicon’s power originates from the Great Old Ones, although the book itself cannot wield the fundamental source as freely as Jason eventually does 25. Ash recounts a legend that it was written by the God of Darkness with ink made from seas of blood and disappeared in 1300; these details are presented as his account of its history 14.

Its arrival in the human realm was part of a long-term scheme involving other devils. They helped arrange for humans to bring it out of the dark dimension under apparently accidental circumstances. In return, the book would provide a passage through which those beings could manifest when its words were read aloud 24.

Pamela’s Resurrection Contract

Pamela used a ritual recorded in the Necronomicon to resurrect Jason as a monster neither dead nor alive. In exchange, she was required to kill everyone who trespassed at Crystal Lake and offer their blood as sacrifice. Her handwritten translation documented the ritual in detail 13.

Reports concerning Pamela’s former home described cult-like activity in its basement. The book disappeared after her death, leaving Luo Ya to investigate its possible connection to Jason and the black mist haunting Luo Ya 11.

Rediscovery and Awakening

Twelve years after settling into life with Jason, Luo Ya searched Jason’s childhood cabin for the book. Jason uncovered a hidden cellar beneath a floorboard, where the Necronomicon remained on a decaying table beside Pamela’s notes 12 13.

In 1993, a visiting evil presence took a mask from the cellar. Its lingering power awakened the book; the Necronomicon later identified the visitor as an emissary of an evil god governing dreams 13 19.

The awakened book attacked Luo Ya through black mist and attempted to assert its authority over Jason. Jason forcibly expelled its influence from his mind. The Necronomicon then summoned black-robed shadows, which dragged Luo Ya into the cellar. Jason intervened and took Luo Ya’s place, allowing Luo Ya to escape 13 14.

Captivity and Negotiation

For seven years, the Necronomicon tormented Jason with repeated visions of Pamela’s death, then used scenarios involving Luo Ya when those memories failed to break him 18 19.

After researching the books and recruiting Ash, Luo Ya returned to Crystal Lake. Luo Ya offered an intact soul in exchange for Jason’s freedom, Ash’s safe departure, the release of the controlled undead, and an explanation of the book’s actions. A threatened nuclear strike helped force its agreement, although the claimed ten-minute deadline was a bluff 15 18.

The bargain also prohibited Jason and the Necronomicon from attacking one another. The book released the souls held within its pages and expelled Ash from the cellar before beginning to consume Luo Ya 18 19.

Attempted Transformation and Destruction

The Necronomicon claimed that consuming Luo Ya’s unusually powerful soul would allow it to become an unrestricted “ultimate demon.” Despite Ash and Jason’s resistance, it completed the consumption, killed Luo Ya, and began forming a human body: its writing became flesh and blood, while its pages became bones 19.

Jason countered by drawing its energy into himself. The book attempted to reverse the process and absorb Jason through “fusion,” avoiding the bargain’s prohibition on harm. Remnants of Luo Ya’s awareness survived within the consumed soul and directed the book’s power toward Jason instead 20.

Jason stripped away its unfinished body, tore through its cover, and imprisoned its fleeing consciousness. The book crumbled to ash as its remaining power, incantations, magical knowledge, and information about its origin passed into him 20.

Aftermath

Jason subsequently took and devoured Ash’s copy. The two books’ power transformed him beyond the limitations that had governed them, enabling him to reconstruct Luo Ya’s soul and restore Luo Ya to life 21 22.

The Necronomicon’s destruction also dissolved its contracts with the devils awaiting passage into the human world, ruining their thousand-year plan. Demons later brought the third copy to Crystal Lake in an attempt to restrain Jason. Their greater demon placed a final curse on it, hoping that the resulting ability to see Luo Ya’s true nature would undermine their relationship 24 26.

Appearance

  • Cover: The Crystal Lake copy is bound in unidentified hide with a greasy texture, shaped into a wrinkled human face contorted in a tortured scream 12.
  • Pages: Made from human skin mixed with demon flesh and blood, according to the information Luo Ya collected 12.
  • Contents: Obscure writing accompanied by illustrations of demons, monsters, and black-robed shadow figures 12 14.
  • Animation: Its facial features twitch, writhe, and wail when active; its black eye sockets appear to watch Luo Ya 13.
  • Differences between copies: Ash explicitly observes that his book and the Crystal Lake book have different covers 21.

Personality

The Crystal Lake Necronomicon is possessive, cruel, and conceited. It regards Jason as a creation that should revere its power and reacts furiously when he rejects its influence. Its torture is calculated rather than indiscriminate: it repeatedly exploits Jason’s attachments and weakens Luo Ya in preparation for consuming a valuable soul 13 18 19.

Its arrogance does not prevent caution. It accepts Luo Ya’s bargain under pressure and specifically requests protection against attacks from Jason. Luo Ya later interprets this clause, together with the book’s reliance on psychological torment rather than direct control, as evidence that it already considered Jason a threat 18 22.

Abilities & Skills

Resurrection and Supernatural Contracts

  • Resurrection: Its ritual restores Jason to an existence between life and death, with blood sacrifices imposed as the price 13.
  • Binding bargains: Its agreement prevents its summoned demons from killing Ash and stops it from directly harming Jason 19 20.
  • Contractual loopholes: It can still torment protected individuals and attempts to absorb Jason by defining the process as fusion rather than harm 19 20.

Soul Consumption and Corruption

  • Soul extraction: Gradually weakens and extracts portions of a soul before attempting complete consumption 18 19.
  • Long-range influence: An unfinished ritual lets it target Luo Ya without the physical book being present, though insufficient power prevents immediate consumption 13.
  • Internal demonic influence: Maintains a demon inside Luo Ya and arranges for a substance that slows aging while strengthening that demon’s influence 19.
  • Embodiment: Consuming Luo Ya’s entire soul initiates its transformation from a book into a human-shaped being; Jason interrupts the process 19 20.

Summoning and Control

  • Manifested illustrations: Opens to an illustrated page and releases its black-robed figures as attacking shadows 14.
  • Possession and undead control: Can control people, monsters, spirits, and the dead at Crystal Lake 15 18.
  • Demonic gateway: Its spoken text supplies a medium through which other dark powers can descend into the human realm 24.
  • Energy dependence: Its summoned monsters dissolve when Jason drains their sustaining power 20.

Psychological and Physical Attacks

  • Illusions: Repeatedly forces Jason to experience scenarios involving the loss of Pamela and Luo Ya 18 19.
  • Black mist: Produces whispers, tentacles, and claws capable of wounding and contorting Luo Ya’s body 13.
  • Corrosion: Its attacking shadows corrode Jason’s machete into scrap upon contact 14.
  • Force projection: Throws Ash away and releases dark-energy shock waves during its final struggle 19 20.

Limitations and Vulnerabilities

  • Borrowed power: The Necronomicon uses power through transactions rather than possessing it outright; its use remains constrained by its user and creator 21.
  • Awakening requirements: The Crystal Lake copy cannot initially awaken without an incantation or outside disturbance. It later claims to exist independently, unlike Ash’s copy 19.
  • Resistance to ordinary destruction: Ash reports that fire and a shotgun failed to destroy a copy. Bullets, salt, and holy water also have little effect on the active Crystal Lake book 14 19.
  • Jason’s resistance: Jason can reject its mental influence and absorb its energy because they share a source of power 13 20.
  • Incomplete soul destruction: Luo Ya retains enough awareness after consumption to influence the struggle, contradicting the book’s confidence that the soul has been fully digested 20.

Relationships

  • Pamela Voorhees — Former holder and ritual practitioner; used the book to resurrect Jason under a blood-sacrifice contract 11 13.
  • Jason Voorhees — Its resurrected creation, later captive and destroyer. The book claims he lost his soul upon resurrection, but a later greater demon identifies his soul and flesh as fused together 18 20 25.
  • Luo Ya — Coveted soul and intended means of attaining an unrestricted form; negotiates the bargain whose protections help enable its defeat 18 19 20.
  • Ash Williams — Holder of another copy and Luo Ya’s ally against the Crystal Lake book; returns to fight it despite having been granted safe departure 14 19 21.
  • Other devils — Partners in its passage to the human realm, expecting it to carry them across in return. Its destruction cancels those arrangements 24.
