A bolt of lightning streaked across the entire night sky, followed by thunder that resounded through the heavens. The flash lit up all of Sheng'an City.
Inside a luxurious villa, Gu Wancheng abruptly sat up, gasping for breath. Another bolt of lightning flashed, illuminating his pale face.
He reached up to wipe the sweat from his forehead and surveyed his surroundings.
His pupils contracted slightly. Where was he? Hadn't he died?
The silk quilt felt unmistakably real beneath his hand. He tightened his grip on it. This clearly wasn't his room, and he had obviously already...
"Hiss..."
A sudden wave of dizziness and nausea struck him. His already pale face looked even worse, and he bit down hard on his lower lip.
Gradually, the headache eased, but Gu Wancheng's face was filled with shock.
First, he had transmigrated. He was now a married man with a four-year-old child. His husband was rich, and his child was adorable.
But second, he had transmigrated into a parenting variety show novel a coworker had told him about. He had become the father who shared his name in the family serving as the protagonists' foil. In the future, the protagonist would suppress him until he became miserable and despondent, and he would be hit by a car and killed while out. His child would become withdrawn because of cyberbullying and develop depression.
His coworker had even teased him about memorizing the whole book. Thinking about it now, he couldn't help letting out a heavy sigh. Forget memorizing it-he hadn't read a single chapter. Everything he knew came from his coworker.
The original owner had actually been hit by a car and killed too. Gu Wancheng remembered the moment a bus had sent him flying. He had desperately hoped the driver would call an ambulance, but what came instead was the bus running him over again.
It hurt. It hurt so much.
He had desperately tried to call for help, but the blood gushing wildly from his body had clogged his mouth and nose. All he could manage were muffled whimpers. Tears fell one after another, his body grew cold, and his consciousness gradually blurred.
At the very end, just before he slipped into sleep, Gu Wancheng had felt the bus stop. Then someone had dragged him aboard.
Tasting a trace of rust in his mouth, Gu Wancheng released his lip and licked it. He had bitten through the skin.
By now, he was drenched in cold sweat. The sensation of being on the verge of death was still vivid.
Knock, knock-
Gu Wancheng wondered who could be knocking so late at night.
He opened the door but saw no one. Instinctively, he tightened his grip on the handle and swallowed.
"Daddy." A young child's voice came from below.
He let out a breath of relief. He had almost thought he'd run into a ghost. After all, if he could transmigrate, wouldn't ghosts be perfectly normal too? He looked down.
His newly acquired son stood barefoot in the doorway, clutching a pillow. His slightly curly hair stuck up wildly, making his adorable face look even more adorable.
Thinking back to his newly acquired son's name, it seemed to be Bo Yuji, with the nickname Chaochao. There were quite a lot of strokes in those characters. In the future, the other children would already be working on their questions before he had even finished writing his name.
Chaochao looked up at the motionless man, pursed his lips, and put on a fierce expression. "Daddy! Aren't you going to take me inside?"
Gu Wancheng came back to himself and hurriedly picked the child up. Otherwise, he might catch a chill in a bit.
Startled when his feet suddenly left the floor, Chaochao instinctively wrapped his arms around Gu Wancheng's neck, only to let go a second later.
By the time Gu Wancheng set him on the bed, he had crossed his arms and turned his head away in a huff.
He was still angry! If Daddy didn't coax him, then... then he wouldn't talk to Daddy for three days.
Looking at the pouting child, Gu Wancheng chuckled. Silly baby, didn't you know that when you were small and weak, getting angry only made people think you were adorable?
Hearing that chuckle, Chaochao immediately whipped his head around and glared at him. "Are you laughing at me?"
Gu Wancheng suppressed the upward curve of his lips and began soothing his bristling son. "Daddy wasn't laughing at you."
Chaochao gave him a suspicious look. "Then why were you laughing?"
"Because I'm so happy Chaochao came to see me." Gu Wancheng meant every word. Having just transmigrated, he had felt a little frightened and unsettled. Only now, with Chaochao keeping him company, did that trace of fear gradually fade.
Coaxed into a smile by Gu Wancheng, he forcibly pressed his lips down again a moment later. He wasn't that easy to appease. "It's thundering outside. I was worried you'd be scared, so I came especially to sleep with you."
Gu Wancheng watched him clutch his pillow tightly as he spoke. Clearly, he was the one afraid of thunder, but to spare the child's pride, he played along. "Then thank you, Chaochao. Daddy really is scared. It's a good thing you came. You're amazing, Chaochao."
If he had a tail, it probably would have been sticking straight up into the sky.
"I know I'm amazing."
Gu Wancheng reached out and stroked his sticking-up hair, withdrawing his hand when he grew annoyed. "I'll carry you to wash your feet. It's very late."
Chaochao blinked and held out his arms. Seeing how well-behaved he looked, Gu Wancheng gave a muffled chuckle and carried him to the bathroom.
After washing his feet, he let him dry them himself. The two lay down on the bed together, and Bo Yuji quietly moved closer to Gu Wancheng, curling up in his arms.
Gu Wancheng lay on his side with an arm around him and patted his back. "Go to sleep. I'm here."
Curled in his arms, he nuzzled against him. At his words, he murmured an assent, closed his eyes, and settled down to sleep.
As the breathing in his arms gradually steadied, Gu Wancheng stopped patting his back.
He lay with his eyes open, not feeling sleepy. The parenting variety show would begin airing the day after tomorrow. It was definitely too late to back out now. He could only steel himself and go through with it.
As long as the protagonist didn't provoke him, he couldn't be bothered to pay him any attention. As for being the so-called foil, forget it.
Thinking of this body's newly acquired husband, he wondered what he looked like. Surprisingly, there was nothing in the original owner's memories. That showed just how unfamiliar they were with each other. Come to think of it, they had only married because each had something to gain.
Thunder boomed, and Chaochao flinched. Gu Wancheng hurriedly patted his back to soothe him.
The rain lasted the entire night. Early the next morning, the sun was already high in the sky. Gu Wancheng had no idea when he had fallen asleep the night before.
Sunlight streamed into the room and fell across Gu Wancheng's face, gilding his hair and making the fine down on his face clearly visible. Perhaps the light was too dazzling; his brows drew together slightly, and he burrowed farther under the quilt.
"Daddy."
"Daddy!"
Like a dying invalid jolting upright, Gu Wancheng shot up. Lying beside him, Chaochao let out a surprised "Whoa!"
Turning to see the child, he recalled last night's memories. So it hadn't been a dream. He really had transmigrated.
"You're finally awake. Grandpa Sun is already out. You're so lazy~" Chaochao said disdainfully.
Seeing him act like a little adult, Gu Wancheng was suddenly seized by a wicked impulse. He reached out with his sinful hands and, under Chaochao's puzzled gaze, quickly ruffled his curls.
Chaochao's eyes widened. Just as he opened his mouth, Gu Wancheng immediately cut him off. "Good morning, Chaochao! Thank you for keeping Daddy company last night. Chaochao is the best little boy."
Gradually losing himself in the rainbow farts, he had already forgotten about his head being rubbed. He covered his face with both hands. "Of course! Father says Chaochao is the best too."
Gu Wancheng looked at him gently. Cubs were so adorable! Now this one was his.
He just didn't know what his newly acquired husband looked like. Still, he probably wasn't ugly, since Chaochao was so adorable.
"Have you brushed your teeth and washed your face, Chaochao?"
"Not yet," Chaochao answered in his soft little voice.
"Come on. Daddy will take you to brush your teeth and wash your face."
