Chapters 501–509 Vol. 6 Read

Ch. 501Postwar reconstruction

Lynn received his Warrant of Trade and extensive Imperial support to rebuild Brevis and Dorito Agri World, while assigning Doudou to lead the Orks on Dead World-A. On the isolated planet Vedtal, scavenger Mei discovered a human infant sheltered inside a Tyranid chitin shell.

  • Lynn received the hereditary Warrant of Trade and a letter from Roboute Guilliman promising Ultramar's support while warning that the Imperium would monitor him.
  • Imperial ships delivered reconstruction supplies, industrial equipment, agricultural aid, and a fleet with armaments for Lynn's domain.
  • Lynn assigned Doudou to take over the Hokage Clan's Ork forces on Dead World-A and began rebuilding Brevis and Dorito Agri World.
  • On Vedtal, scavenger Mei searched scrapyards for salvage and found a human infant in a chitin shell inside a fresh impact crater.
  • Mei lifted the heavy infant and was struck by its bright purple eyes and sweet smile.

Ch. 502Ayla (I)

Mei raised Ayla in a scavenger settlement on Vedtal, where her rapid growth and extraordinary abilities drew both suspicion and wonder. He took her scavenging to keep her safe, and she proved capable of spotting valuable salvage and killing a giant irradiated cockroach before she was even a year old.

  • Mei named the baby girl he found Ayla and brought her to his settlement, where scavengers welcomed her with small gifts.
  • Ayla grew rapidly and developed an enormous appetite, while rumors spread that she was a source of calamity.
  • Mei confronted the scavengers who slandered Ayla and threatened anyone who continued.
  • Mei began taking Ayla scavenging because her appetite strained his food ration and he feared leaving her alone.
  • Ayla quickly learned to identify valuable supplies and dodged a giant irradiated cockroach before killing it with a sharp metal fragment.

Ch. 503Ayla (II)

Ayla grew from a cold, highly capable child into someone who began to understand compassion and civilization through Mei’s guidance. After leading the settlement to defeat a pack of Tusag Hounds without casualties, she uncovered evidence that someone had engineered the attack and prepared an ambush for the human enemy behind it.

  • Ayla’s efficiency and physical strength rapidly surpassed those of the people around her, and Mei realized she needed moral guidance after she stabbed someone who had insulted him.
  • Mei taught Ayla to help the settlement and told her how caring for an injured person had marked the beginning of human civilization, prompting her to value community.
  • Ayla sought a chance to unite the leaderless settlement, then detected an approaching pack of Tusag Hounds and organized the camp’s defenses.
  • Ayla directed the settlement to kill all twenty-five Tusag Hounds without suffering any casualties.
  • Ayla found evidence that someone had drugged the hounds and placed an attractant to weaken the camp, then disguised the settlement and laid traps for the attackers.

Ch. 504Ayla (III)

Ayla lured a better-equipped raider gang into her camp’s hidden minefield, crippling their convoy and killing or incapacitating many of them. As Gunshi prepared to bombard the camp, Ayla charged out alone with her power spear to face the raiders.

  • Gunshi’s raiders approached the camp but held back while they assessed its apparent damage and watched for danger.
  • Ayla staged a burial scene with wounded-looking scavengers, tempting the raiders into advancing toward the camp.
  • The raiders mocked the visible animal traps and drove into the hidden minefield, which destroyed their lead vehicle and left more than twenty raiders out of action.
  • Gunshi halted the survivors and ordered them to prepare a ranged attack with heavy machine guns and rocket launchers.
  • Ayla ran alone from the camp toward the armed raiders, intent on demonstrating her individual fighting strength.

Ch. 505What Was Steel Forged For? (Part One)

Ayla defeated Gunshi’s bandits but struggled to understand Mei’s fear, the losses in the settlement, and the way people supported one another. After witnessing the funeral procession share its grief and burdens, she was left questioning how people changed when they came together.

  • Ayla exploited flaws in the bandits’ exoskeleton and rifle, wounded Gunshi by disabling his mechanical leg, and forced the remaining bandits to surrender.
  • Mei slapped and tightly embraced Ayla, then insisted on stitching her wounds herself, prompting Ayla to admit that it hurt.
  • Ayla examined the barricade where two people had died, but Mei led her to learn about them before discussing improvements.
  • The mother of the boy who died explained that he had helped because he thought he ought to, and she thanked Ayla for saving others.
  • At the funeral, Ayla sensed the mourners’ grief gather into a shared resolve as they carried the coffins and supported one another.

Ch. 506What Was Steel Forged For? (II)

Ayla reconsidered how to change Black Iron City after learning what its people depended on, then pursued an aircraft lead at the Seventh Dock. There she opened an ancient maintenance station and discovered the Gorgon Legacy Core, a repository of ten thousand years of Iron Hands thought about steel and flesh.

  • Gunshi revealed that Black Iron City’s merchant associations supplied bandits and that the city used them to restrain growing settlements, so Ayla proposed destroying it until Mei made her consider the consequences for its residents.
  • Ayla dismantled captured machinery, built Har a powered prosthetic leg, and realized people worked better when they understood what their labor would accomplish.
  • Gunshi told Ayla that Black Iron City’s most powerful weapon was a rare fighter aircraft connected to the Seventh Dock, so she decided to search for one instead of attacking the city.
  • Ayla found an ancient data chip bearing the words “THE FLESH IS WEAK” and began questioning whether machinery should replace flesh.
  • Ayla opened a sealed underground maintenance station at the Seventh Dock and activated the Gorgon Legacy Core, which assessed her organic structure and revealed itself as a repository of accumulated Iron Hands doctrines.

Ch. 507What was steel forged for (III)

Ayla rejected the core’s argument for replacing healthy flesh with machinery but admitted she could not fully answer its questions about loss and human nature. When Black Iron City’s armed convoy threatened Seventh Dock, she rallied the scavengers and hastily rebuilt an ancient Dreadnought chassis into a makeshift war machine.

  • The core argued that mechanical prosthetics and reduced emotion improved reliability and combat performance, while Ayla said she did not know whether she would change her judgment after losing people she cherished.
  • A lookout reported that Black Iron City had spotted Seventh Dock’s activated equipment, and Gunshi warned Ayla that an armed convoy of hundreds was approaching.
  • Ayla ordered Gunshi and the scavengers to block the three roads into Seventh Dock, then learned from the core about an abandoned experimental Dreadnought chassis.
  • Ayla recruited scavengers to help repair the chassis, fitting it with platform legs, an autocannon, a makeshift cutting claw, missile launchers, and scavenged armor.
  • Ayla piloted the towering, hastily assembled machine as the Black Iron City convoy cleared the roadblocks, and Seventh Dock’s residents recognized it as a Titan God-Machine.

Ch. 508What steel was forged for (IV)

Ayla used a jury-rigged mech to defeat Black Iron City, and the scavengers’ resolve sustained it through an unknown psychic force long enough to secure their surrender. After reorganizing the prisoners as potential workers, she kept the wreckage and set her sights on unifying Vedtal with a true god-machine of the Imperium.

  • Ayla piloted her improvised Titan into Black Iron City’s forces, but a mining melt-through cannon crippled it and left her wounded.
  • When the scavengers chose to fight beside Ayla, an unknown psychic force made the damaged mech move for sixty seconds, allowing her to destroy the cannon and command network and capture Black Iron City’s commander.
  • Ayla ordered Black Iron City’s soldiers to surrender, then refused to execute the prisoners and organized them into workers and soldiers with the promise of eventual freedom.
  • Ayla told the Gorgon Legacy Core to keep recording the unexplained force that had sustained the mech.
  • Ayla ordered usable parts from the wreckage repaired or melted down, kept the main frame, and declared that unifying Vedtal would require a true god-machine of the Imperium.

Ch. 509What steel was forged for (V)

Ayla reorganized the defeated Black Iron City force and immediately led an attack on the city, taking it with help from its divided defenders. While questioning the captured city lord, she discovered that Black Iron City had stored the wreckage of a large Imperium war machine taken from beneath Seventh Dock, and ordered him to lead her to it.

  • Ayla learned Black Iron City had few troops left to deploy and decided to attack before its defenders could regroup.
  • Ayla offered the prisoners food, shelter, and freedom after a year of work, and several revealed details about Black Iron City's defenses and facilities.
  • Ayla led Black Iron City's captured armored vehicles to its gates, where her engineers and drivers tore apart the old locking mechanism.
  • Workers, slaves, civilians, and some security forces turned against Black Iron City's rulers, allowing Ayla's people to secure the city and its vital facilities.
  • Black Iron City's captured lord was caught trying to escape, and Ayla questioned him about the city's supplies and records.
  • Ayla found a file describing the stored wreckage of a large Imperium war machine and ordered the city lord to take her to it.
