History

Imperial Lord Tournament

He Buxian represented the Indestructible Divine Mountain in the Imperial Lord tournament overseen by Lin Yu. After forty-five days of fighting, he claimed first place by summoning the mountain’s phantom and overwhelming the other contestants. His victory demonstrated how strongly his sect’s cultivation method scaled in higher-realm battles 239.

When Lin Yu offered to fulfill his wish, He Buxian asked for his mother’s cultivation and talent to be restored so that she could resume cultivating. Lin Yu granted the request despite her being a thousand miles away 239.

Search in the Red Sun Immortal World

Sent by the Primordial Hall’s Hall Master, He Buxian entered the Red Sun Immortal World to retrieve its Heaven-Mending Fragment—not to obtain the Lord of the Firmament’s inheritance. He sought assistance from the influential Red Peak Gang and befriended its grand elder through their shared enjoyment of drinking 433 435.

After an extended search, he detected an unusual second power within a demonic beast and followed it to a cave. Inside, he found several powerful beasts and a stone bearing the presence of a Heaven-Mending Fragment. He seized the stone, set the cave ablaze, and escaped, although the flames could also harm him 433 434.

The beasts pursued him beyond the cave. Using sword techniques and lions created with his brush, He Buxian trapped and killed them before taking the stone to the grand elder for examination 435.

Death of the Red Peak Gang’s Grand Elder

Before the grand elder could explain what he had recognized, a mysterious force transformed their surroundings into a snow-covered mountain domain. He Buxian’s spiritual power slowed, while the elder became petrified and shattered into powder. The Primordial Token helped He Buxian remain conscious and resist an invasion of his sea of consciousness 437 438.

Arriving disciples saw only He Buxian beside the dead elder and accused him of murder. He repeatedly denied responsibility, but they rejected his explanation and attacked. He retaliated with the Six Harmonies As-You-Will Palm, killing the attackers 437 438 439.

Afterward, He Buxian noticed that residual Chaos Qi had been influencing his thoughts. Recognizing that the elder had likely been silenced for discovering a secret, he vowed to avenge him and continued pursuing the force responsible 439.

Arrival in the Dao Awakening Era

He Buxian went to the Phoenix Ancestral Sea in search of Lin Yu. Before finding him, an unexplained wind swept him away; he awoke in the Youming Immortal World of the Dao Awakening Era. Unable to find a way out, he continued tracking the mysterious force until he encountered Lin Yu 519 520 526.

Lin Yu joined the investigation and repeatedly protected him from mental interference, power-draining terrain, and Hao Dog Demonic Beasts. When a fissure opened beneath He Buxian, Lin Yu followed him underground, saved him from a metal spike, and expelled dark power from his sea of consciousness 521 523 528.

He Buxian initially insisted on continuing the pursuit despite his exhaustion. After recognizing Lin Yu’s displeasure, he apologized and agreed to leave. Lin Yu explained that outside interference had affected his judgment, then taught him how the Dao-Opening Era’s Heaven-Mending Fragments could develop spiritual awareness 533 534 535.

The Water Droplet Man’s Trap

The investigation connected the mysterious attacks to a sentient Heaven-Mending Fragment. He Buxian helped Lin Yu’s group secure Feng Changge’s cooperation, including plucking his feathers and accepting a challenge to fight after their work was complete 557 564 569.

Later, He Buxian recognized the desert into which the group had been drawn and warned the Fallen Black Phoenix and Feng Changge about its draining effects. He demonstrated how to destroy the Hao Dog Demonic Beasts and cautioned them against falling into the parasite-filled fissures. However, the Water Droplet Man had strengthened the trap, exhausting He Buxian much faster than before 577 580 581.

Unable to force their way through the barrier, the three conserved their remaining power and relied on phoenix flames to hold back the creatures below. He Buxian trusted that Lin Yu would rescue them and took reassurance from the fact that his Primordial Token had not activated 585 592 593.

After Lin Yu arrived, He Buxian discouraged his companions from following him underground. His own experience had shown that the deeper suppression could leave them unable to protect themselves 596 599.

Attempts to Erase the Water Droplet Man

The group’s efforts to refine the fragment became more complicated when the Water Droplet Man’s consciousness transferred into a little black-and-gold monkey. Feng Changge’s earlier use of Origin Fire left him unable to safely repeat the process immediately 629 636.

He Buxian argued that eliminating the Water Droplet Man took priority over preserving the monkey, whose survival could otherwise endanger far more lives. He helped explain the failed refinement to Feng Nianzhi and requested her Origin Fire as their remaining known means of destroying the consciousness 633 636.

When Feng Nianzhi was later injured in a secret attack, He Buxian urged the panicked Feng Changge to remain composed. He also defended the Fallen Black Phoenix against accusations by stating that they had been together all night. Nevertheless, he subsequently drew the phoenix away partly out of concern that he might attack the dying Feng Nianzhi 642 645.

Lin Yu later realized that he had been bearing the Dao Awakening Era’s rejection pressure on behalf of both He Buxian and the Fallen Black Phoenix 713.

Appearance

  • White clothing: His outfit closely resembles He Xianshan’s, with Lin Yu judging their attire at least eighty percent alike 239.
  • Composed bearing: At the tournament’s conclusion, he appears more composed and unrestrained than He Xianshan, displaying absolute confidence in his victory 239.

Personality

He Buxian combines confidence with fierce loyalty. He uses his tournament reward for his mother rather than himself, and the grand elder’s death drives him to pursue an enemy capable of overpowering him without warning. He is deferential toward Lin Yu, whom he regards as a godlike figure, and feels secure when the Hall Master is present 239 439 520 541.

Persistence is one of his defining strengths, but it can become fixation. His investigation leaves him prone to self-reproach and unwilling to withdraw even when exhausted. Some of his uncharacteristic fear, dejection, and resistance to Lin Yu’s decisions result from hostile mental interference rather than his ordinary temperament 439 528 531 533 534.

He is merciless once an enemy attacks. After unsuccessfully explaining himself to the Red Peak Gang disciples, he kills them to prevent further trouble, though he rejects prolonged torture as conduct befitting an evil cult. His pragmatism also shapes his willingness to sacrifice the monkey to stop the Water Droplet Man 439 633.

His exchanges with companions are often blunt and teasing. He repeatedly bickers with Feng Changge, yet gradually accepts him and later demands that he stay calm when others need his leadership. He also avoids questioning the Fallen Black Phoenix about a past he suspects is painful 571 583 642.

Equipment / Items

  • Primordial Token — Given to him by Lin Yu. Helps him resist mental invasion and remain conscious; He Buxian also relies on its failure to activate as reassurance that his life is not yet in immediate danger 437 438 592.
  • Treasured sword — Used to channel his sword intent and produce formations of sword shadows 435.
  • Brush — Creates combat lions 435.
  • Wine flask — Used in his fire-spitting escape from the beasts’ cave. The resulting flames lack intelligence and can burn him as well as his enemies 434.

Relationships

  • Lin Yu — Hall Master and protector. Sends He Buxian to retrieve a fragment, repeatedly rescues him, and corrects his understanding of the forces behind the investigation 435 520 528 535.
  • His mother — He requests the restoration of her cultivation and talent as his tournament reward 239.
  • He Xianshan — Related cultivator whose attire closely resembles his own; the precise relationship is not specified 239.
  • Red Peak Gang’s grand elder — Drinking companion and close friend despite their considerable age difference. His murder becomes a personal reason for He Buxian’s investigation 435 439.
  • Feng Yaoyang — Described by He Buxian as his brother. He worries that conflict involving the Fallen Black Phoenix, who occupies Feng Yaoyang’s body, will injure him 541 542.
  • Fallen Black Phoenix — Initially viewed as a villain occupying his brother’s body. Shared experiences reveal a more tender side, although He Buxian remains wary of his hostility toward the Archaic Phoenix Clan 561 583 645.
  • Feng Changge — Frequent sparring partner in verbal arguments and a reluctant ally. Their antagonism develops into cooperation during the desert ordeal 569 571 587 642.
  • Feng Nianzhi — Ally whose Origin Fire he requests to eliminate the Water Droplet Man’s consciousness. He respects her power but has little personal connection to her 636 638 642.
  • Water Droplet Man — Enemy associated with the sentient fragment and the strengthened desert trap. He Buxian recognizes his rapidly developing intelligence as a threat extending beyond their immediate group 581 585 633.
