Power Progression
| Stage / Realm / Level | Chapter | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| God of Thunder — original divine power | 55 | Wields Mjolnir and lightning before Odin punishes his unauthorized attack on the Frost Giants. |
| Divine power sealed | 55 | Odin removes his divine armor and seals his lightning and divine power, banishing him to Earth as a mortal. His body nevertheless remains stronger than an ordinary human’s. |
| Divine power restored | 56 | His willingness to die protecting innocent people earns Odin’s recognition. He returns to life, regains Mjolnir and his sealed power, and destroys the Destroyer. |
| Partial awakening of innate thunder power | 96 | Seeing Loki gravely injured triggers a further awakening, with lightning appearing in his eyes and around his body. |
| Awakened power becomes intermittent | 130 | Admits that the power awakened earlier has gone dormant and works inconsistently. He continues relying on Mjolnir rather than developing it. |
| Full awakening under mortal threat | 176 | Cornered by Hela after Mjolnir’s destruction, he fully releases his innate thunder power and briefly drives her back. He remains unable to defeat her. |
| New king of Asgard | 178 | Eitri identifies him as Asgard’s new king and states that he can fully inherit its source power; the passage does not establish that he has already completed that inheritance. |
| Renewed eruption and upgraded Mjolnir | 179 | Resonance with the reforged hammer draws out his dormant thunder power. The new Mjolnir produces stronger divine lightning and can summon the Bifrost without a numerical limit while Asgard’s origin remains intact. |
Appearance
- Build: Tall and powerfully built; his arrival in New York is described as a towering figure descending from the sky 96 129.
- Battle attire: Wears divine armor and carries Mjolnir. Odin strips away his armor during his banishment, while Hela later shatters his armor in combat 55 176.
- Manifested power: Lightning flashes in his eyes and surrounds his body during his awakening; his anger also coincides with thickening storm clouds overhead 96 97.
Personality
Thor initially treats strength as permission to act without restraint. Headstrong, quick-tempered, and eager for battle, he ignores Odin’s orders and nearly destroys the peace of the Nine Realms. His inability to lift Mjolnir on Earth breaks his confidence, and his decision to face the Destroyer defenseless marks his acceptance of responsibility for others 55 56.
His loyalty to family can still override his judgment. He attacks Wenwu over Loki’s injuries despite Loki’s invasion of Earth, insisting that Asgard alone has the right to judge his brother. Once assured that Loki will survive, however, he abandons the fight to help repel the Chitauri 97 99.
Thor remains proud of Asgard but rejects conquest without restraint. He enthusiastically shows Wenwu his homeland, yet refuses Hela’s rule because her cruelty and ambition would condemn Asgard to endless war. He is also deeply attached to Mjolnir, mourning its destruction and initially preferring its repair over a replacement weapon 130 176 178 179.
Abilities & Skills
Divine Thunder
Thor’s power comes partly from Asgard’s Origin Power, also identified with the World Tree, and partly from his ancient divine bloodline 105.
- Channels powerful lightning through Mjolnir and can surround his fists with electricity during unarmed combat 97.
- His fully awakened power allows him to release immense lightning without Mjolnir, as demonstrated against Hela 176.
- Full awakening is described as authority over the law of thunder, rather than merely using a hammer to control lightning 136.
- Before his confrontation with Hela, his awakened power is unstable, and his dependence on Mjolnir discourages him from mastering it 130.
- His lightning is not effective against every opponent: Wenwu absorbs it through his Doom Metal body and redirects it at him 97.
Asgardian Physique
Thor retains exceptional physical resilience even while his divine power is sealed 55.
- Suffers no noticeable impairment after Wenwu secretly draws one thousand milliliters of his blood 55.
- Fights through multiple groups of agents to reach Mjolnir while depowered 56.
- Survives being hurled through buildings during battles with Wenwu and Kurse 97 129.
- Possesses self-healing, but Hela’s lingering death energy suppresses it and prevents his chest wound from closing 176.
Mjolnir Combat and Flight
Thor uses Mjolnir for melee strikes, ranged attacks, and aerial movement 56 97.
- Destroys the Uru Divine Steel Destroyer by striking its core after only a short exchange 56.
- Throws Mjolnir at supersonic speed; it changes direction to pursue Wenwu after an initial miss 97.
- Recalls the hammer from a distance and lets it carry him through the air 96 97.
- His early fighting style combines formidable attack and defense with comparatively slow movement, a weakness Wenwu explicitly recognizes 56.
Spatial Travel
- Uses the Tesseract’s spatial power, supported by his divine power, to transport himself and the wounded Loki from Earth to Asgard 100.
- Arranges Bifrost passage between Earth, Asgard, and Nidavellir 130 178.
- After Mjolnir’s reforging, can summon the Bifrost through the hammer whenever needed, provided Asgard’s origin endures 179.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Mjolnir — Uru Divine Steel hammer and Thor’s principal weapon. Odin enchants it so that only someone worthy at heart can lift it. Thor loses access to it during his exile and regains it after his self-sacrifice 55 56.
- Divine armor — Protective armor worn in battle; damaged by Wenwu’s redirected lightning and later shattered by Hela’s attack 97 176.
- Tesseract — temporary possession — Secured with Wenwu’s help to return Loki to Asgard and address the damaged Bifrost. Odin later hands it over to Wenwu 99 100 131.
Relationships
- Odin — Father and ruler of Asgard. Banishes Thor to teach him restraint, then acknowledges his willingness to protect others. Thor later reports Odin’s death to Eitri 55 56 178.
- Frigga — Mother. Hela’s attack on her is among Thor’s stated reasons for refusing his sister’s rule 176.
- Loki — Younger brother. Loki deceives him about Odin’s death and sends the Destroyer to kill him, but Thor remains fiercely protective and later takes him back to Asgard 56 96 100.
- Hela — Elder sister and rival claimant to Asgard’s throne. Thor acknowledges her claim by birth but opposes her cruelty, mourns those she kills, and accepts Wenwu’s intervention against her 176 178.
- Jane Foster — Romantic partner on Earth. Grieves over his apparent death during the Destroyer attack; Thor later spends extended periods living quietly with her 56 176.
- Xu Wenwu — Initially an opponent, later an ally and benefactor. Their cooperation begins with recovering the Tesseract and develops into mutual assistance; Wenwu ultimately saves Thor from Hela and proposes upgrading Mjolnir 97 99 130 176 179.
- Heimdall — Asgardian ally who monitors the Nine Realms and assists with travel. Thor introduces him to Wenwu and later accompanies him to Nidavellir 130 178.
- Sif and the Warriors Three — Companions who come to Earth after discovering Loki’s scheme. Thor later mourns the Warriors Three after Hela kills them 56 178.
- Eitri — Dwarf king and weaponsmith. Repairs and upgrades Mjolnir after offering Thor the alternative of Stormbreaker 178 179.
- Carol Danvers — Opposes his request to recover the Tesseract and insists that Loki stand trial on Earth. Thor escapes with both Loki and the artifact while Wenwu holds her back 99 100.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Banishment and the Destroyer
Odin exiles Thor after his unauthorized attack on the Frost Giants. While Thor is hospitalized in New Mexico, Wenwu secretly collects his blood for research. Thor subsequently reaches Mjolnir but cannot lift it, leaving him vulnerable to Loki’s claim that Odin has died and his exile is permanent 55 56.
When Loki sends the Destroyer to Puente Antiguo, Thor offers his life in exchange for the townspeople’s safety. His apparent death leads to Odin’s recognition and the restoration of his powers. He destroys the construct and returns to Asgard with his companions 56.
Chitauri Invasion and the Tesseract Dispute
Thor arrives in New York to confront Loki but instead finds him gravely injured by Wenwu. Their ensuing fight ends when Thor sees that Loki is no longer dying and redirects his efforts toward the invading Chitauri 96 97.
Afterward, Carol and Fury refuse his request for the Tesseract, which Asgard needs to repair the Bifrost. Wenwu secretly offers to help recover it in exchange for receiving it later. Thor agrees, catches the artifact when Wenwu knocks it from Carol’s hand, and uses it to escape with Loki 99 100.
Dark Elf Attack and Wenwu’s Asgard Visit
Sent by Odin to oppose the Dark Elves, Thor arrives in London and initially knocks Algrim back. Once Algrim becomes Kurse, however, Thor is repeatedly overpowered. Wenwu kills the attackers, prompting Thor to openly acknowledge his strength 129 130.
Thor then escorts Wenwu to Asgard to meet Odin and discuss the Tesseract. After Odin returns the artifact, Thor accompanies Wenwu back to Earth and leaves to find Jane 130 131.
Hela’s Return and Mjolnir’s Reforging
Following Odin’s death, Hela devastates Asgard’s defenders and destroys Mjolnir. Thor fully awakens his thunder power under pressure but is still grievously wounded. He refuses to support Hela’s conquest, and Wenwu intervenes before she can kill him 175 176.
Watching Wenwu defeat Hela strengthens Thor’s resolve to master his own power. He subsequently travels to Nidavellir, where Eitri reforges Mjolnir with Stormbreaker’s properties. Thor remains there during the completion of Wenwu’s Divine Halberd of Destruction, whose power leaves him visibly envious 177 178 179 181.
