Background / History

Childhood and the Original Akatsuki

Konan grew up as a war orphan in the Land of Rain. She and Yahiko struggled to obtain food, and she found Nagato nearly starving on the road and brought him back. Their shared experiences became the foundation of their friendship and their desire to change the country 28.

The three became Jiraiya’s students after Yahiko took the initiative to approach him. Konan initially feared the Sannin because they were powerful enough to fight Hanzō. She later supported Yahiko’s leadership and Akatsuki’s pursuit of peace through communication 27.

Konan and Yahiko liked each other, while Nagato concealed his own feelings for her to preserve their friendship. Within Akatsuki, Konan handled much of the organization’s coordination 29 30.

Hanzō’s Trap and Yahiko’s Death

Hanzō captured Konan as a hostage before a supposed meeting with Akatsuki. While guarding her, Aoki Tsuki revealed that Hanzō and Danzō had arranged a trap for the following morning. Unable to escape, she could only worry about Yahiko and Nagato 30.

At the meeting, Hanzō ordered Nagato to kill Yahiko in exchange for Konan’s life. She urged both men to abandon her and flee, but Yahiko instead impaled himself on Nagato’s kunai. Hanzō then ordered an attack despite his promise to spare the survivors 31.

Afterward, only Konan and Nagato remained together with Yahiko’s corpse. Konan resolved to spend her life fulfilling Yahiko’s last wish, while the surviving Akatsuki turned toward secrecy, greater military power, and taking control of Amegakure 33.

Rebuilding Akatsuki and Governing Amegakure

Konan established an intelligence arrangement with Tsuki to investigate Hanzō’s routines and prepare a coup. She subsequently fought alongside him against Kakuzu, whose strength and wealth made him a valuable recruitment target 33 35 36 37.

Tsuki supplied personnel records, defensive deployments, and concealed sentry locations before joining Akatsuki as a trainee. After the takeover, Konan reviewed the village’s records and finances, discovering enormous debts and spending heavily concentrated on Hanzō’s guards. She and Nagato used some of Kakuzu’s earnings to sustain the village 41 44 45.

Her responsibilities expanded to recruitment, mission assignments, intelligence oversight, and diplomacy. She forced Sasori to join through an explosive-tag trap, promoted Tsuki to the core membership as Azure Dragon, and later assigned him to investigate unreliable intelligence under Zetsu’s control 49 58 96. During the war with Iwagakure, she conveyed Pain’s agreement to ceasefire negotiations after Tsuki presented the frontline’s losses 171.

Mental Attacks and Renewed Training

While holding off enemies so Tsuki could escape the Fourth Raikage, Konan was struck by Yamanaka Fū’s Mind Body Switch Technique. She expelled him from her mind, but the interruption disabled her paper transformation long enough for two blades to pierce her. Tsuki rescued and healed her 83.

Shisui later controlled her with Kotoamatsukami, causing her to attack Tsuki as though he were Hanzō. Tsuki restrained her and sealed her chakra rather than retaliating 103.

These failures drove Konan to improve. Fearful of becoming a burden again—and aware that “Madara” also possessed a Sharingan—she sought mental training from Tsuki. Her persistence secured the Single-Point Gazing Method, which she learned unusually quickly 106 107.

Growing Close to Tsuki

Tsuki’s increasing power both reassured and frightened Konan: she valued his contributions but feared another betrayal. Even his promise to support her leadership did not immediately earn her complete trust 162 177.

Their relationship deepened when he brought her Danzō’s corpse. Konan thanked and embraced him, briefly allowing herself to express grief she had suppressed for years 187. Later, their chakra connection during combination-jutsu practice revealed his attraction to her and intensified feelings she struggled to reconcile with her attachment to Yahiko 208.

Tsuki eventually arranged Yahiko’s temporary return through Impure World Reincarnation. Konan embraced Yahiko and finally had an opportunity to say goodbye before his soul returned to the Pure Land 212. She subsequently overcame her guilt about pursuing Tsuki, and the two became lovers. Nagato encouraged her to keep living and described Tsuki as someone she could entrust her life to 214 215 217.

Final Conflict and Village Leadership

When Obito revealed the Eye of the Moon plan and tried to take control of its final stage, Konan fought beside Nagato. Explosives concealed within her paper body and a vast false tree helped them survive his assault and force his withdrawal 227.

She later supported the fighting against Madara, joining Tsuki and Kikuno Momo in the enormous Majestic Attire Thousand Arms combination. During the final battle, she also agreed to help protect Tsuki’s body while he continued fighting 244 250.

After Akatsuki’s victory and disbandment, Konan was officially appointed head of Amegakure. Tsuki served as acting village head while she rested during her pregnancy. A year later, they took a family portrait with their son, whom Tsuki named Aoki Minami 252.

Appearance

  • Akatsuki cloak: Wears the organization’s black cloak patterned with red clouds 217.
  • Paper wings: Forms large, angel-like wings for flight and combat 129 206.
  • Gold ornament: Has a pure gold ring next to her navel 83.
  • Later styling: Seeks advice on grooming and clothing and changes her appearance to attract Tsuki’s attention 203.

Personality

Konan is meticulous, intelligent, and thorough. Her experience coordinating Akatsuki helps her assume responsibility for Amegakure, where she routinely handles documents, personnel information, finances, and intelligence 30 44 45 187.

Her loyalty is intensely personal. Yahiko’s death leaves her emotionally withdrawn, and preserving his dream becomes her reason to continue living. She treats Pain’s pursuit of peace with near-religious conviction; Tsuki fighting him to a draw shakes her belief in Pain’s invincibility 33 77 202.

Betrayal makes her suspicious of apparent allies, especially Tsuki, whose competence contrasts with his evasiveness and shifting allegiances. Nevertheless, she recognizes service and gratitude: she remembers his contributions to Akatsuki and permits him to visit the imprisoned Kikuno Momo after hearing why he feels indebted to her family 45 51 162.

Her reserve does not prevent persistence or adaptation. She spends months approaching Tsuki for training despite embarrassment about asking a subordinate for a secret technique. Later, she becomes more direct about strengthening herself and more willing to acknowledge her feelings for him 106 159 214.

Abilities & Skills

Paper Release and Dance of the Shikigami

Konan develops basic chakra attachment to paper into a secret technique that physically separates her body into paper; it is not an illusion 216.

  • Dispersal and reconstruction: Splits apart to evade blades and projectiles, then reforms unharmed when sufficient paper remains 36 49.
  • Transformation: Travels as swarms of paper butterflies and reforms at her destination 35 206.
  • Flight: Uses paper wings, although the chakra cost leads her to travel long distances on foot 129 194.
  • Restraint: Can wrap enemies in paper to suffocate them 208.
  • Survival limit: Cannot survive if all the paper sustaining her body is destroyed at once 250.

Paper Weapons and Angel Wings

Her precise chakra control allows her to reshape and direct numerous paper weapons simultaneously 107.

  • Weapon forms: Creates shuriken, swords, spears, senbon, and large spinning wheels 36 102 129.
  • Power and control: Her paper shuriken rival iron shuriken in destructive force and can change direction in flight; her spinning paper spears are as hard as steel 49 102.
  • Torrential Rain Senbon: Launches densely packed paper needles 129.
  • Angel Wings: Fires paper swords from her winged form; against Utakata, she bursts approaching bubbles before they can explode 206.
  • Concealed explosives: Mixes Explosive Tags into weapons to punish blocking, interception, or close pursuit 36 102.

Paper Clones and Paper Person of God

Konan creates physical Paper Clones and disguises paper constructs through Paper Person of God 101.

  • Deception: Her disguised clones cannot be seen through by the Sharingan in her battle with Shisui 101.
  • Explosive clones: Conceals tags inside clones and detonates them around opponents 37 101.
  • Layered substitutions: Uses multiple clones to draw out Tsuki’s attacks while hiding her real body during their spar 129.
  • Environmental disguise: Constructs an enormous false tree and false ground containing hidden explosives 227.
  • Improvement: Her later disguises require close examination even from Pain 183.

Mutually Multiplying Explosive Tags

This finishing technique uses Explosive Tags to summon more tags, sustaining concentrated explosions at a fixed location 162 209.

  • Remote deployment: Her paper control allows her to attack from outside the blast area, addressing the danger that normally makes the technique forbidden 162.
  • Demonstrated output: Maintains five minutes of bombardment against the Eight-Tails, blasting apart two tentacles 209.
  • Cost: Consumes considerable resources and places a substantial burden on her during use 162 209.
  • Counter: Gyūki escapes partway through with a severed-tail substitution 209.

Mental Energy and Chakra Control

Konan possesses exceptional chakra control, demonstrated by simultaneously shaping, disguising, and maneuvering large quantities of paper 107.

  • Single-Point Gazing Method: Begins cultivating condensed mental energy under Tsuki’s instruction, completing its introductory candle exercise in one week 107.
  • Efficiency: Refined spiritual energy improves her control and extends her combat endurance 159.
  • Scale: Later controls several times more paper with greater attack speed and flexibility 183.
  • Mental defenses: Builds multiple layers of protection within her mind, though Tsuki can still contact her through Telepathy 187.
  • Limit: Her mental fortress does not withstand Obito’s Mangekyō-level ocular power 227.

Combination Jutsu

Konan’s paper techniques supply mobility and a physical basis for fusion with Tsuki 208 216.

  • Flying Thousand-Armed Kannon: Covers the construct in paper and forms enormous wings; Tsuki’s senjutsu chakra enhances the paper’s hardness, speed, and flexibility 208.
  • Paper-body fusion: Joins corresponding sheets of her body with his, combining their energies and increasing his capacity for senjutsu chakra 216.
  • Majestic Attire Thousand Arms: Adds Kikuno Momo’s Susanoo armor to the fused Kannon. Its eight-hundred-meter form uses Buddha’s Divine Palm to crush Madara’s surrounding Susanoos 244.

Weaknesses and Counters

  • Mental interference: Fū’s Mind Body Switch disrupts her chakra and deactivates Dance of the Shikigami; Kotoamatsukami compels her to attack an ally 83 103.
  • Wind and fire combinations: Kakuzu’s wind can scatter her paper and expose it to burning, preventing her from safely relying on dispersal 37.
  • Chakra absorption: Aburame insects consume the chakra attached to her paper, causing her to lose control of affected sheets 80.
  • Water: Tsuki uses water to soften her hardened paper weapons. Conversely, she survives Madara’s large fire attack partly by soaking her paper beforehand 129 239.
  • High-output opponents: Her ordinary paper attacks prove insufficient against a transformed Jinchūriki, and overwhelming attacks threaten complete destruction of her paper body 206 250.
